The benefits I see at Cape Henry are small classes, dedicated smart teachers, a warm environment where everybody knows your name. The school works to bring out the best in each student, to capitalize on each individual's strengths. They do have lots of requirements and programs so that each student is exposed to all disciplines and athletics and needs to reach a certain high level of proficiency in academics, but the school celebrates individual strengths and interests and does not try to make each student fit a particular mold. There a a lot of foreign students here as well as many opportunities for educational travel. It seems to be a place where you'll find outstanding artists, athletes, math genius's, writers, poets, musicians, readers, all held to a high moral code and a school honor code. As a parent of 2 graduates and one lower schooler, your kids will benefit the most from enrolling in 1st grade or as soon after that as possible.

Cape Henry offers amazing opportunities academically as well as in the arts and sports. We have incredible faculty who always listen and always keep lines of communication open which I feel is so important in the growth of a child. The school truly becomes a second family and it is a family that provides and facilitates what is right for YOUR child as an individual. They nurture and grow each child's strengths building the confidence and maturity to take on the world. Having three children attending Cape Henry is such a blessing and we could not be happier. Once you step foot in the halls of Cape Henry, you will never go anywhere else!

My favorite thing about CHC is the super POP of energy you feel as soon as you walk in the door. That feeling of my child learning the world in her classes, w/her teachers & from the student body there, is exactly what I wanted for her from the minute I set foot in the school. I loved the project about South America w/each class doing a different country & presenting it at Assembly & hearing Julie Scherrer describe it to all of us parents, the woman is a force of nature & makes you want to jump up & DO something. And the Science Fair was so cool. My then 6 yr old child asked a million ?'s about the Mars Rover. amazing to me! She breathes it all. Trust me when I say that I've more than "explored the options". Yes I'm one of "those moms", it's my education & my instinct. I know it's the most right for my eyes wide open, never stops thinking child.

Cape Henry Collegiate is truly one of the finest communities that I have been fortunate enough to be a part of. I am both a parent and an employee and could not imagine my family's life without CHC. My son is able to explore every imaginable opportunity in arts, athletics, and academics. He has thrived as he discovers his talents and has loved connecting with the older students who are positive role models and inspiring individuals. I have always wanted what is best for my child and making the financial sacrifice to send him to Cape Henry is well worth the life long benefit.

When we found out about Cape Henry we could not wait to visit even though it was 40 mins away. From the time we stepped foot in the door the overall tone was warm and welcoming. We absolutely loved the idea of our girls getting an opportunity to attend. When they were accepted it was like hitting the lottery! So we made every sacrifice for them to go and a year later we don't regret one single thing! They genuinely care about the kids there. Learning is interactive and fun. Teachers are very approachable and positive. Most importantly my girls love going to school everyday! We couldn't have asked for a better place to send our short people. I can on and on about CHC but you just have to go in and see it for yourself!

A rating of one for this private school is too generous. This is the worst school ever. Teachers yelled and screamed at students. Classes are overcrowed and understaff. All they care is the money. Save your money and send your kids somewhere else.

I have had my daughter at Cape Henry for 4 years now and I can't imagine her attending another school. The faculty are caring and thoughtful, and the class sizes are small enough that I know that my daughter is in an environment that will encourage her to thrive. It is obvious that the administration works hard to value all families. As a parent of a younger child, we are still learning what our daughter is interested in. The school has a good balance between the arts, athletics and all academic disciplines. Take the opportunity to tour, especially when public school are having to cut programs and resources. I am glad that we did.

Cape Henry provides an excellent moral environment for your children. I like the honor code, community service, etc., as well as the flexible but professional dress code. Academics are solid. In the lower school, there is a lot of hands on work, but unless the child gets a teacher with a lot of experience in gifted education, the truly gifted child will not be challenged. We have not been as pleased with the Middle School. They switch from a visual spatial learning methodology to a straightforward lecture and note-taking auditory learning approach, which is not how most kids learn. If you child has ANY disabilities whatsoever -- ADHD / LD -- the school, though it seems to mean well, does not really know (and is not legally bound) how to accomodate them. Overall, not sure if the school is worth the BIG bucks for the tuition.

This schools motto should be every dollar counts, not every child matters. The teachers are more concerned with planning bells and what s for lunch in the gourmet cafeteria than whether your child getting the extra help they need. This was evident with the disestablishing of their Academic Enrichment Program that was in place to help those a little less fortunate. Whether or not your child will succeed depends on how much you can afford to give. It s been rumored that once enrolled the Head Master does a financial family tree background check to see how much money you can give to the school. Outrageous tuition costs and supplemental cost will break you. Where did all the good teachers go from last year.?

I attend this school. I am truly lucky to go to this school because the teachers teach you more than just the basics, learning. They teach you how to be a good and productive member of society. In one of my middle school classes, we have to write a paragraph about a motto chosen by our teacher each week. Every week the motto is inspirational and they always make you think very hard and understand what community really means and also how to be thankful. The percentage of kids in honors classes is very high. I'm sure that many kids that graduate from this school will be wonderful members of society, and maybe even the leader of this country. This school is by for the best in Virginia.

As a parent of three children who have attended Cape Henry from preK through grade 12, I can attest to the great education they received from Cape Henry. All three of my children were very well prepared for the rigors of college and life in general. I was always impressed with the wonderful learning environment, the caring faculty and the amount of time they invested in each of my children. My kids were able to play sports and go on some pretty unbelievable trips to foreign lands with their classmates. This was by far the best money I have ever spent.

Cape Henry is a top-notch school! I believe wholeheartedly in the mission of this school-- it has truly emphasized the values we are teaching our children at home. The teachers are phenomenal, teaching to the individual student, rather than to the 'test' (as in SOL tests!) Our children have thrived here!

Truly, an absolutely classless sports program based on typical private school recruiting. If you want your child to learn sportsmanship and how to play a chosen sport, there are many other private schools in the area that should be viewed.

Absolutely the best environment for students! An involved faculty and staff, along with a strong commitment to the honor code, create an atmosphere that stimulates learning, both academically and personally. A wonderful experience for students and their families.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.
