My son, in fourth grade, was suspended for bringing his mini pocket tool to school. He was suspended for only a day because he's doing really well in school. In fact, he was just referred to the gifted program. How serious are the implications of having something like this in his permanent record? Will this hurt his chances of getting the best education he can get?
Sadly "zero tolerance" policies have zero common sense built into them. Your son sounds like he got caught up in a policy that has no wiggle room.
Suffice it to say, if this is the only "run in" he has over the years with breaking rules, it won't be an issue at all. Colleges won't go back and look at things that far back. And even his middle school and high school course work will be chosen by his ability, not a one-time suspension.
