Relocating due to PCS in Navy

chenoamb September 30, 2012

My family and I are relocating to the area and will be looking at homes and schools. My son is in 4th grade and I will be stationed at Little Creek with the Navy. We are putting a lot of stress on finding a good school for our son to attend due to past difficulties with a hometown school. We were fortunate enough to get into a public charter school, however, I noticed that the area does not have charter schools. We would greatly appreciate any information and recommendations for schools and areas to live. We will be relocating on 10 October from Lexington, NC. Thanks in advance.

Hi chenoamb, and welcome to the GreatSchools Virginia Beach parent community.

Here's a really easy way to narrow down the search for schools in your area. Start here:

Type in the zip code. Then compare the ratings, read the parent reviews, and select the schools you want to go tour.

Good luck!

Hi there, we are a military family and just moved to the Little Creek area in July. Whilst I cannot predict how your son will like it, we have found Thoroughgood Elementary a fantastic school. It took our daughter, who is in 5th Grade a little while (maybe 6-8 weeks) to settle in as this has been her first move in a long while, but the subject matters have been absolutely fantastic - building catapults and boats, programming lego robots, oyster farming, geology, taking core samples and local social studies. These topics have been used really well by her teacher (the fantastic Ms Rose) to get across key mathematical, literary and especially analytical skills, and has meant that our daughter is now highly enthusiastic about learning and the school as a whole. Don't get me wrong - it's not been easy for her (my understanding is that some classes are grouped into high, or not so high achievers) and there is certainly an expectation of hard work and an aspiration to achieve. If, however, you want your child focussed and pushed on in a highly stimulating environment, then I can't recommend it highly enough.
