After touring Boxwood as a prospective school for each of our sons, my sister called to ask additional questions in regards to her son, who has mild Asperger's. The Directress of the School responded by telling my sister that she talked so fast that she must be the reason that her son has special needs. This is absolutely disgusting. Aside from the fact that my sister actually doesn't speak fast at all, this shows a shocking lack of understanding of the causes, treatment, and approaches to special needs families. Needless to say, my son and my nephew will definitely NOT be attending this school, and I encourage others in the community to stay away as well.
My son is transfering to Boxwood after a year in another local nursery school. We have been so happy to find a school that allows children to learn from the world around them--there is a strong emphasis on constructive outdoor play. The first day I visited to observe a class I was astonished by how well the children worked and played together--helping each other when they got stuck but largely working through and really mastering challenges on their own. The teachers are first-rate and do a wonderful job of guiding without over-directing. Even on my son's first day, the only time he got upset was at the end of the day--he didn't want to leave! Of all the schools we've seen in town, this one also has the most devoted family involvement and 'alumni' loyalty.
My family loves boxwood. The head teacher is tough but fair. She has taugh my boy strong values and independance. Everything you want in a school it has.
My son is experiencing his first year at Boxwood School at absolutely loves it. His first year of pre-school was spent at a classical pre-school environment and we found it to be a glorified day care. We made the decision to move him to a Montessori program and he has flourished. He will be turning 5 in March and is starting to read and write and loves math! He has learned so much in such a caring and informal setting. It could not be a more prefect environment for a child. I just wish Boxwood went through elementary school. If you are at all questioning this type of environment, check out their summer camp. It is spectacular and a great way to find out if your child is comfortable at this school! We just love it!
