In the Prince William County Public Schools District (PWCS), elementary, middle and high school students can apply to specialty programs that focus on such areas as biotechnology, International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, language arts, math and science; the deadline is in early February. High school students also have the option of taking online courses. Gifted education services are available for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The district also offers alternative programs for at-risk students and special education services including free developmental screenings for children ages 2, 3 and 4; vocational assessments; and resources for school-to-work transitions.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
