INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

This school is Fantastic! The new administration is hands on and caring. I have a 2nd grader, a third grader and a 5th grader. We have been at this school the past two years and the teachers are caring and responsive. I am grateful that we moved into this area and will be sad when we transfer out of the area next summer. Couldn't believe the negative comments on the teachers and admin. Wonder what attitude these parents/children had bc there is no way that I believe this principal and teachers could be anything but helping and accommodating. I am a former teacher and know what good admin and teachers look like. Without a doubt I can say that 80 percent of the teachers and 100 percent of the current admin are stellar. Thank you Springwoods.!

This school, it's principal, and the majority of its staff are representative of the worst that the education system has to offer. There are one or two teachers that meet the standard, the rest are relics they'd dug up from retirement. The principal should be removed, as she is not a leader and is incapable of setting a course for the school. We have experienced racism within the school. One teacher in particular only favors Asian female students, reflective of her personal tastes. The retiree teachers are undertrained and worse don't care. How anyone rates this mini prison a 5 is beyond me. Va supposedly has some of the best schools in the country, if they counted springwoods i am positive this inflated information would change.

Where to begin? Despite claiming serious changes (in actuality they have just brought their school up to the physical standards expected within the state) very little has changed at Springwoods. The school is more concerned with 'equality' than it is with the education it provides its students. Go to their home page, when half your screen is covered in Urdu and other languages, it indicates two things 1) Teaching is near impossible given language barriers 2) Kids who speak english as their first language fall behind as a result. The standards for math and english are low, there is next to no homework of value, and this system is perpetuated by a principal who is more concerned with image than actually doing her job. Our children have fallen behind as a result of attending this supposedly 'great' school. The tenured teachers are unable to learn and adjust, they are jaded, and frankly ineffective. Look at how many teachers have been hired back out of retirement, how can anyone claim this is progress? And yet the board muddles through and pretends that by updating the building the education has improved. If you want to set your child back developmentally send them to this school

Unfortunately this school has moved to being rated a 9 to a 7! We moved here based on the high rating. The administration has changed, which often adds to rating changes, but the overall quality of instruction is concerning. There are some excellent teachers there, but there are also "burnt out" teachers and either teachers who are inexperienced or just don't want to put the effort into their position. It makes us really question the administration because they all come from very mediocre schools and are inexperienced in their positions.

I have nothing but nice things to say about Springwoods so far. My son attended kindergarten there and I was thrilled with the knowledge he came away with. And the teachers/administrators were awesome - not only did they teach, but they cared. After the first day of first grade, my son came home and announced, "My teacher is really fun!" Looks like it's going to be another great year. Construction has been going on at the school over the summer and it is not completed yet. But I think it's to increase the size of the school (hopefully do away with the "trailers" in the back...) and also to upgrade the school technology. It will be nice when it's done.

We are a military family who chose to live in the area because of the great reputation of this school and we have not been disappointed! My children are now going into their 4th year at Springwoods and we have been extremely happy with their teachers and the administration. This past summer they have undergone construction making the school bigger and better. The new administration has been a welcome change to the community. Springwoods also has a strong group of parents/PTO that plan fun activities for the students throughout the year. I am a teacher at another school in the county and my kids choose to go to Springwoods instead of attend my school because they love it so much. If you are thinking of moving or buying a house in this area, I strongly recommend it!

I'm not sure why this school has received a couple bad reviews. This is by far one of the best schools my daughter has ever attended (including private schools). We have been to many schools across the nation (CA, WA state, fairfax county, private schools). In Fairfax county our daughter started receiving "average" scores on her tests after years of paid private school, which we were NOT happy about so we moved out to this area and since attending springwoods, she has scored in the top 10% of the nation. Staff and teachers are friendly. Yes, class size may be a tad bigger given the NOVA population but definitely not the biggest I've seen .

Overcrowded, old teachers, old facilities, poor leadership, and more importantly a poor learning environment. Firstly, I would like to know how this school receives 5 star reviews? What is it being compared to? Out of the four schools our children this school has been the worst. There are only a handful of teachers that actually care, the classes are dark and over crowded, and the curriculum is basic and outdated. More importantly the the leadership at the school is not strong, and more importantly not involved to the extent they should be. The facilities are outdated, and the overall learning standard is very minimal. This school could improve by removing 'tenured' faculty, make teaching a priority, and work with the school board to facilitate additional facilities for the students. The school is more concerned with its 'diversity' ration rather than the quality of the education and the experience it provides its students. If you have not been anywhere else perhaps one could understand the perception that this school is great, but it is not. There are only a handful of teachers at springwoods that are up to par, hopefully if you attend, you will luck out and get one.

I bought my house based on the school my kids would attend. I did much research in the area and Springwoods continued to come through as a top rated school. My kids are now into their 3rd year at Springwoods and I have absolutely nothing ill to say of the facility or the education my boys are receiving. The bus transportation is punctual, the office staff is friendly and helpful. The new principal is very hands on and has small kids of her own. She is understanding and gets the job done. She is such a nice and compassionate person. The teachers are so nice and love kids. I like that I am welcomed at the school by name more often than not and asked to help out and me involved in my boys education. If you are considering Springwoods, don't hesitate. You'll be glad you enrolled your kids.

We are thrilled with Springwoods so far. I admit I am a tough consumer to please, and typically have a complaint. I don't have any complaints. Our first experience with school has been wonderful thanks to SW ES and their staff! My daughter's teacher is fantastic! We moved our entire life around (including the sale of our home) so our children could go to SW ES. The school is organized, positive, nurturing, and welcoming. The principal left just a few weeks back and that had me worried, to date everything has remained the same, and I am so thankful. If you have a choice in where your child can go to elementary school, in my opinion you can't go wrong with SW ES.

I consider this school to be only slightly above average. It is by no means outstanding. We moved here last summer and were extremely disappointed with the 5th grade curriculum. The reason this school is able to keep its school of excellence status is because they blatantly teach to the sol test. Both of my children spent their entire last 9 weeks studying for their standardized tests. If you are coming from a below average school, you might be pleased with this school. However, if you you are used to an above average school you will be disappointed.

This school is fantastic! My son was a third grader there, and had some very serious learning problems. He needed to be moved to another school because of this, and in the many meetings we had about him, the staff had only his very best interests at heart. His teacher, Miss Doyle was just great with him, and in the end we were sad to go, but they were just meticulous with his testing, and the school psychologist Mrs. Ross really knows her stuff! It was hard for us to hear what she and the other staff shared, but it was all true and well researched. I am an AP at another school, and know a good staff when I see one, and only wish my staff was this good - very professional and knowledgeable. My son is now at another school that specializes in his type of learning problems, but had it not been for the Springwoods special education staff, we might not have ever known! The Principal should be commended for such an excellent staff that she has put together.

We are a military family and have been very happy with this school. The Principal, Mrs. Ripperger, is excellent, caring, very involved and supportive of both kids and parents. I have witnessed her actively recruiting excellent teachers she interacts with, so I know she has been involved in attempting to hire teachers who are compassionate, organized and motivated. The parents & PTO are phenomenal too. My 2 kids have received only the very best in the way of teachers - professional, patient, caring - the kind of teachers who just love and want the very best for kids. They haven't been the type who challenge children far beyond ability, which we appreciated- we've been to those schools & basically, the parents end up doing all the work that is too hard for the kids & the kids end up stressed out. These teachers know it is important to let the kids be kids & there is learning value in that. Like all the schools I've been to, if your child has borderline learning disabilities, they care, but they are underfunded & can't even really give advice lest they then be liable to provide assistance. I wish parents could opt to subsidize the program to obtain some help in these cases.

We are a military family and have experienced several different elementary schools (I have a kindergartener and 5th grader). My husband and I place a high priority on education and want our children to attend excellent schools. Springwoods Elementary is fantastic and by far the best school we have ever seen. The staff is incredible and the teachers are top notch. This school has received many acedemic honors and I am confident that my children are getting a quality education. I volunteer in the school and get to see first hand how the staff, teachers, and students interact. Students are encouraged and learn in a stress free and enjoyable environment. You will not be disappointed with Springwoods!

I have lived all over the United States and this school and it's staff is by far the most superior I have ever encountered. Much better than private school even. The teachers are wonderful and love teaching and their students. I am so proud that my child goes to Springwoods and I brag about it to everyone I know. Fantastic PTO and I have met so many wonderful parents who are so active in helping Springwoods to be the best school in Northern Virginia.

Springwoods works with parents to teach and guide our children. This is a school that greatly encourages parents to be a part of their childrens education and they do so by the teachers and the office staff always being available to work with you and your children in the learning process.

My child has attended this school for 2 years. The first year was not so bad, however this year my child has suffered. The teacher is not organized, or friendly (to kids and parents alike). The principal is great and actually listens to parents, as well as attempts change. The PTO is very active. It does feel as if most parents have chips on their shoulders. The school is a good school, though I think better teachers need to be chosen. I do believe that if my child had a different teacher this year, the year would be going much better, and my kid would be more successful.

We moved here for this school and have not been disappointed. The teachers and staff are welcoming and approachable with any parent concerns. I ve seen issues concerning high teacher/student ratios & bullying resolved. Springwoods continues to keep the communication lines open and finds a balance between the county s new math program and traditional math. I've been on the PTO for 4 years and have seen first hand the parent and staff support. No one should be unhappy with this school because the staff, teachers and PTO all work very hard for every child at Springwoods.

We left this school after the first year my two children attended. This school strives more on numbers then allowing the children to be children. My son is a special needs child, and we constantly were butting heads with the principal and vice principal. The teachers were outstanding, however tey do not have the support they need. The PTO is very active, however they are very negative and do not accept newcomers well. This is a fairly transiant area. Your child's friends will come and go. Since leaving this school, my son has gone from struggling to just get by, now he is coming home with excellant grades. The level of difficulty did not change, however the level of support and guidance did.

The school is fantastic and Ginger (The principle shows great deal of involvement and interests in her students).is a great Principal. I am extremely disappointed in the administrative staff at Springwoods. The teachers are extremely caring and supportive of the parents and children, however they do not have the support from the principal. The administration does not accommodate children with special needs. Too much emphasis is placed on test scores (PALS) rather than the children's needs. The principal is cold and many parents of the PTO are as well. Strong PTO involvement. If you are new here, they are not willing to make you feel welcomed. They strive on being a school of excellence, but they only support those who make their statistics look good. If your child has no difficulties then they will be ok here. If your child has difficulties, then I suggest that you look elsewhere. We moved to this area for the school and after 1 year, we are leaving to get our child the support needed.

We have just recently moved to this area based on recommendations of this school. We have been highly disappointed. The teachers I have interacted with have been cold and distant. The new principal is not in touch with the parents or the kids. The new math program is a joke. My first grader is bored in class and not challenged whatsoever. Communication between teachers and parents is horrible. Parents are extremely unfriendly and closed off to newcomers. Everyone walks around with this puffed chest like the school is so great. Seems like it is riding on what it used to be 5 years ago but is on a downward spriral. Everyone raves about Springwoods but I have yet to be impressed. No caring attitude there.

Caring, devoted and highly regarded are the best ways to describe the teachers, staff and administration at Springwoods. I moved into our development just for Springwoods. My daughter thrives in this school and I couldn't be happier. Amy White is an amazing leader and the entire Springwoods community of parents and students recognize it! What a great school! The parental involvement and interaction with teachers and staff is incredible and it shows!

What a great school. My three children are doing very well here. The principal is very interactive with the parents and gives us feedback on school activities. The teachers in both Kindergarten and first grade (my children) are great, and I look forward to the other grades with delight. My childern love the music, art, and library opportunities. I would like to see more computers and a shaded play area. The PTA is very strong, possibly too strong. This school was the main reason I moved into this Lake Ridge community, although the proximety to DC, Fort Belvoir and the Potomac Mills mall also swayed my decision.

You can not find a better school than Springwoods! The teachers, principals, and office staff are so dedicated to the children. Excellence is the standard set from the top and filters to everyone there. There is very high parent involvement. The teachers take the time out of their evenings to e-mail or call you for anything you need. They want your child to succeed. This school has received the School of Excellence Award for the past 3 years straight. This school has certainly been the best school I could have ever found for my child and I really must say the teachers make it so wonderful!
