I'm a former student of MMA. I attended my senior year of high school back in 2003. I am presently a successful educator and parent with unfortunately no thanks to this academy. Military staff on duty is pompous and appears uneducated. Teachers are barely qualified to teach their subjects, and acedemia is a joke. The school boasts of good grades and college acceptance but fails to show the parents the incredibly simplistic, low standard outline of the curriculum. Cadets are treated as guilty parties in almost every situation due to the large number of 'juvie' kids that end up at the school. Most of the girls in the female dorms were at the school due to some hang ups with the law or their previous school and all female cadets were frequently put 'on lockdown' when permiscuious activity was suspected. There was very little trust and room to grow between cadets and adults. It was silly, really and was a fantastic power trip to those in charge. I realize that this environment may be useful to some individuals, but to most, it's very constriting, frustrating and breeds rebellion of the worst kind for young people.

Massanutten is definitely not worth the high price. The staff and faculty are unmotivated and demoralized, the academics are very subpar, and there is little supervision in the dorms or the classrooms. My child is applying for other schools and will definitely not return next year.

I was not planning to send my teen to this school, just for the summer camp. However, my daughter, after returning from MMA summer camp REFUSED to go to our public high school. Thank you MMA for everything you done for us!

We are so happy we found Massanutten for our 16-year-old son. We noticed so many positive changes after one year and are looking forward to him graduating in 2014! Six months after visiting, our son called the admissions office and told them he was ready. So grateful to the faculty and staff for all they have done.

The best decision we ever made was introducing my son to MMA! He has always been a good kid but always had a hard time academically in public school. I found MMA and asked if he would like to check into it. We visited and from that moment he knew he had found his place. Since he has been at MMA he has become a leader, an honor roll student and is happier then I have ever seen him. This school has brought out the best in him. For the cadets that realize that this is an oppertunity, the sky is the limit. The comradery amung the cadets is amaizing! Everyone is very supportive. My son now refers to MMA as his second home. I would reccomend this school to any teen interested in an alternative to public school.

Weak on Algebra. Very weak. Our daughter tested way behind after a year at MMA in a Sylvan Institute assessment. Much lower than public and DoDDS schools.

MMA relies highly on what the students make of it. If he or she decides to look for a way to get around the rules and not cooperate they will have a terrible time. However if they do what they are supposed to a cadet will have some of the best time of his or her life. This is not to say that sometimes the school does suck, but you would be hard pressed to find a place that doesn't. The teachers I have met were some of the greatest and smartest people I have ever known. Yes we do get a lot of new faculty every year but the quality rarely suffers. Leadership here is very strong within the corps, I have never seen such a collection of great young people and i'm proud to call them my friends. Adult leadership suffers in a lot of areas but improvements are being made. My favorite part of my experience here was forming the bonds I will keep all my life, this includes many kids and many adults. So in conclusion i'll say that anyone who does not like it here often makes it much worse on themselves. They will refuse to fix their own problems and will blame it on the school. MMA is an amazing place even if some don't realize it, they will.

Hello all! :D I'm a proud member of this awesome family called MMA! I came from another country (Brazil) after have served almost 32 years in the Brazilian Army, and I can garantee you that MMA has a perfect combination and balance between military model and a kind attention to our cadets. We are preparing future Leaders here! Como to visit us!! Go Colonels!! Col. Marcelo Goncalez

Lots of promises but they are not kept. This school year, 5 of my child's 7 teachers have changed from highly qualified teaching staff, to people who have no experience or are retraining in education. The band program was dropped halfway through the school year and that class became study hall. Not all the activities and teams they tell you about really exist (no swimming, no scouting, no drama club). We would not send our chlld back here even if it were free.

Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
