DC Scholars: Stanton Elementary is a promising turn-around school. After decades of mismanagement and nonexistent school culture, the faculty and administration are working tirelessly to advance children in math and reading by at least 1.5 years each year. The large majority of the teachers are rated effective or highly effective. They have become a model in DCPS for how to approach parent engagement. They have partnered with the Flamboyan foundation and have successfully completed hundreds of home visits and dozens of Academic Parent Teacher Team meetings with parents. Standardized test scores are improving dramatically as a result of student-centered teaching approaches and family engagement. They still must work on providing substantial instruction in science and social studies.

In comparison to other Elementary School's in the area, I would have to say that Stanton Elementary School is ran more Efficiently than others. I think the Principal is a great guy, and only heard good things about him. In my opinion I do think the school lacks communication between the staff, and there seems to be no set stucture at the facility.

Stanton has one of the most accomplished science resource teachers in the nation, Mrs Hardett Taylor-Brown. I have never seen a teacher who has this level of classroom management in any school. She is the best.

I think that Stanton Elemtary School is kind of wild but it needs a little more improvement. And that Mrs. K. Jackson is wonderful and she gets alot of work done. I believe Dr. Donald Presswood is doing a outstanding job also.

Dr. Donald Presswood is doing an outstanding job there. I think the school will finally make AYP for the 2008-2009 academic school year.

I strongly believe that Stanton Elementary could be a more effective school if parent involvement is stronger. The faculty at Stanton works diligently with the children and promotes perfection.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Washington, D.C. used the District of Columbia Comprehensive Assessment System (DC-CAS) to test students in reading and math in grades 3 through 8 and 10, and science in grades 5, 8, and High School. The DC-CAS is a standards-based testing program, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the District of Columbia. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Rating legend
Below

Average
Above
average

Our rating (from 1 to 10) reflects a school's overall performance. The higher the rating, the more likely the school will prepare your child for the future, so choose an above-average school (8-10) if possible. For average schools (4-7), do careful research and look for evidence that the school has high-quality programs. For below-average schools (1-3), take caution; a low-performing school may not provide the instruction or environment your child needs to learn, and you may need to supplement classroom lessons at home.

Academic rating

The academic rating is made up of equally-weighted parts: students' test scores, their academic growth and their readiness for college (for high schools). If a school is designated low performing (Tier 3) by the DC Public Charter School Board, the school receives a "Below average" GreatSchools Rating. The graphs below compare this school's results to other schools in the city.
