The best school in DC without a doubt! The school is one of those gems in the crowd. The teachers, the admin. everyone involved cares and is proud to be at this school and you feel it when you step onto its beautiful campus.
My child has attended grades K-5 at Hyde Addison and I can say without hesitation that I have no regrets with sending him here. Hyde has all of the benefits of a small school but some of its drawbacks as well. I have a lot of faith in Principal Nerenberg and the teachers. They all know my child, which isn't uncommon, and take a genuine interest inside and outside the classroom to make sure he succeeds. The school underwent a multi-million dollar renovation thanks to the Fenty Administration and now has 2 historic schoolhouses connected by a fenced in playground. While the school has all the charm of Georgetown so too its space constraints. The children go to Fillmore (Hardy) on Wednesdays for 2 arts electives. This works out well but the school's lack of a gym is something the administration needs to address. They have 2 PE classes/week outside or in makeshift spaces. Performances and PTA meetings are generally held at St. John's Church across the street. Class sizes are on the high end and would be difficult to manage if not for the student teacher assisants. The school is incredibly diverse both socioeconomically and linguistically. I call it the United Nations of schools.
We are very proud parents of a Hyde-Addison's student. The Pre-K teacher Ms Conezio is very sweet and calm. All the kids love her and learned a lot. She also created a website where we can check the day by day at school. Ms Nerenberg is a strong leader. She is always open to new ideas and knows each student very well. Amazing. I hope that the new Chinese and Spanish programs will give us good results. We are so lucky!
This school is simply wonderful - the principal and teachers are phenomenal and the support staff is superb.
Hyde is a wonderful school! Ms Nerenberg is an excellent principal and the staff is wonderful! My kids have been at Hyde for the last two years. The educational opportunites are endless, and the staff really does dedicate time to your child. Kudos to Mrs Alsop and Mrs Roth!
My child has attended the school since First grade, this is her fourth year, overall I am very pleased with the school 1-3 grade results, The fourth grade year has fallen flat due to lack of clear direction and communication issues as well as the teachers not having enough support to properly implement the standards. I am sure things will get better as the school grows accustomed to its new leadership, but unfortunately it is to late for its current years students.
A gem of a school in a great neighborhood. Lots of individual attention and terrific, experienced teachers. Among the highest test scores in the city. As a recognized leader in academic excellence, Hyde is a demonstration school for the Reading & Writing Project (DCPS Master Plan). Very diverse student body with an active and involved PTA. The in-boundary enrollment is increasing as more young families move back to Georgetown and discover this excellent little red schoolhouse literally in their own backyards. I went to Hyde in the late 60s and my son is now attending. We love it!
Hyde is a rare gem in public schools. Since there is only one class per grade with one exception, I feel that everyone at the school personally knows my child. Hyde now has an excellent PE teacher who also puts on dances/shows for kids on Friday nights periodically throughout the year. A wonderful diverse school!!!!
Hyde has a strong arts program but there is a weak science program and absolutly no PE or PE teacher. Its a nice small school but unfortuneately, there are not many extras in the curriculum. I am a current parent at Hyde and my eldest children went to Hyde but only went for a few years. Hyde isn't the worst school, but it is not my number one reccomendation and does not meet my standards of a truely great school.
Wonderful school, excellent teachers and an amazing atmosphere. Kids do well academically (at least the motivated ones) and have a lot of fun. Multiracial, multicultural and with most parents really involved. Can't praise it enough!
Hyde is the best. Thats all there is to say. I'm not a parent I'm a student. I've gone to Hyde for 7 years but now I'm at Hardy. My years at Hyde have been the best years ever. The educaion is great and the people in the school, parents students and facilty are just like a big family because everyone knows eachother and thats one of the best thing about a school.
