Academic focus and philosophy

Educational philosophy and approach to learning Montessori education "follows the child." Children are given the opportunity to be responsible for their own education. They are able to move throughout the classroom, choose activities that interest them, and learn from each other. The classrooms and materials are designed to match the stages of childhood development. Our philosophy embraces the natural world and avoids competition and rewards. Our children are distinguished by their self confidence, love of learning, and independence.

Social emotional skills development The Montessori Method addresses these skills through grace and courtesy lessons, peace tables for conflict resolution, and mixed age classrooms in all programs. Aidan is also a RULER School through the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.
Math skills development We use concrete, hands-on Montessori materials that prepare developing young minds for more abstract mathematical concepts and operations as they progress through the curriculum. If you would like to learn about examples of these materials, we encourage you to google terms such as "trinomial cube" and "Montessori bead chains for squaring and cubing."
Speech development The Montessori Method fosters articulation through mixed age classrooms, one-on-one lessons and conversations with both faculty and fellow students, and Montessori language materials specifically geared toward meeting these needs. There is an emphasis on communication and children explore all aspects of written and spoken language.
Reading skills development We use a phonetic approach, which uses materials specifically designed to appeal to and be understood by young children. If you would like to learn about examples of these materials, we encourage you to google terms such as "sandpaper letters," "moveable alphabet," and "Montessori function of words."
Typical day and activities Students enjoy long uninterrupted work cycles, spend time outside every day, and work with Montessori materials independently, in one-on-one lessons, and in small groups with their peers. Montessori work spans several categories, including language development, socialization, mathematics, cultural studies, practical life, art, and music.

Parent involvement details Aidan Montessori operates the Aidan Program for Families (APF), which works closely with our parents in order to provide the best possible experience for children. APF's goal is to support families as they create and maintain a home environment that complements the Montessori experience. Aidan also offers a Parent Association, parent conferences twice a year, written reports, frequent email newsletters, and a variety of social media accounts.
Approach to addressing and preventing bullying At Aidan we teach grace and courtesy beginning at the earliest stages. This is a continuing process, and children demonstrate respect in different ways depending on their age and social development. Our community expects students to respect themselves and others. The school has a detailed plan for responding to occasional aggression outlined in its Parent Handbook, which is updated every year.
