My child struggled at his previous school. He's excelling due to the wonderful teachers! So happy I made the choice to put my child in this school. The school is also open to feedback from parents.
If I could give a ranking lower than one, I would. Two of my three children have been students at Potomac Lighthouse since the Fall of 2011. In the first semester, the school lost both of their fifth grade teachers. Two classes became one, and it was a tremendous upheaval to the routine, familiarity, and dynamic to which the children had grown accustomed. In the second year, they brought on a new team with the promise that it would be a "completely different school". In that time, the upper academy has experienced daily and weekly restructuring, as ineffective teachers have been rotated out of the upper academy and placed in the lower academy in order to gain "classroom management experience." The school has implemented a draconian discipline policy in their attempt to mimic what has worked for other schools, resulting in a complete and total lack of respect for the children by the adults. I have observed the humiliating tactics employed by the teachers to redirect the children's behaviors. This school misrepresents itself in it's mission and vision, and the only thing rigorous about them is the destruction of self esteem, community building, and quality education.
School administration: I've had a great experience with the school administration. They are receptive to feedback and growing. The teachers are wonderful and my child loves going to school here.
School Administration: I have had a different experience with the school administration. They are very receptive and responsive to the needs of the family. They are a relatively young team and work extremely hard. They are receptive to feedback and make every effort to implement the suggestions of families. My child loves going to school there and every year the school gets better
As far as learning, this is an excellent school. However, the administration in this school are the worst. They are unorganized and not connected to the students or the parents concerns. Their transportation is a joke. If you're able to take your child to and Friday m school it will cost you.less head aches. There's so much nepotism( hiring of only relatives and friends) in this school that it should be illegal. The teachers (most of them) are the only reasons I have put up with this school. But be warned that the incompetent administration let go of teachers with no consideration of how it will effect the students. As please ask your student what is going on in the school because of the nepotism it is a lot of bias situations going on. Things I have heard and saw with my only eyes in this school would make.you scream. I'm Looking for another school. Good luck and God Bless.
I love this place, and i have hight expectation about this school. I don't know why they have few latinos there.
Potomac Lighthouse is a charter school with great potential, but leadership that is worried more about the bottom line than anything else. Students are often not held to consistent expectations, and staff is hired and dismissed at whim without regard to how it will impact students. I do not recommend this school to parent seeking a quality charter school education for their student.
This was my son's first year attending a chartered school. He is in the first grade and I love his teacher. She's young, vibrant and she makes my son want to learn. I really think my son enjoys his class. On the administrative side being that this is a new school (i'm guessing) the school doesnt has good management skills and they seem all over the place, no order. Customer service was great during recruitment but know attitudes through the roof.
