As a revious student I, Myself can say that Barnard Elementary school has prepared me for my current success as a 10th grade student. They Offer wonderful electives and have ground breaking teachers, Mrs.Sharon F. McCrea to name just one. As a student of many schools and teachers I can say that this school has a staff that actually cares about its students not only education but overall well being and happiness.
We appreciate the concern for each student's TOTAL well-being. The staff is very concerned about the student's social development as well as academic achievement.
Barnard is great school. I am very impressed by the teachers and the Principal, as they are pushing the kids to learn in the most fun way possible. My son loves going to school and comes home singing a new song at least twice a week. Barnard is doing a great job.
Barnard is a great school. I have 1 child currently enrolled and one who graduated a year ago. Principal is Superb, Staff is very professional and my children love the school. I do not volunteer as often as I wanted to, but I was aware of the various activities that the PTA sponsored for all the students and staff at the school. It was a great Year. The PTA even got my retired mom to volunteer and she felt welcomed at the school. Barnard school encourages past students and parents and people in the neighborhood to be involved in this great school.
I gave Barnard a 4 Star rating because it is "Above Average" for a DCPS school, but I think it is more of a 3.5 star School. I have a child that is currently attending Barnard. On the + side Barnard's current Principal, Dr Reid, is very dedicated to the success of the school & the teachers seem to be dedicated to giving the children a quality education. If those are the main things you seek from a school then you should be more than happy to send your child to Barnard. HOWEVER, if you seek more for your child, you may want to look elsewhere. Barnard does not have adequate administrative support. With 435 students there is no Asst Principal (due to a hiring freeze there won t be an Asst Principal position this year) As for resources, Barnard lacks clubs or activities for your child to participate in. Part of this is because of the ineffectiveness of the PTA at Barnard. Although it is "active" it has a lot of organizing (and re-organizing) to do before it MIGHT become an effective organization. Although the PTA is unsatisfactory, there is an Early Childhood Education group that just started and is making a little bit of progress. Again, overall, Barnard is a 3.5 school.
We have been very impressed with Barnard's early childhood program for the last 2 years. The teachers are very dedicated and the school is very well-run. Faculty, staff, and children seem genuinely happy to be part of the Barnard family.
My son has been a student at Barnard for 3 years. It's really hard to find a SPED program in DC that has results. This one actually works! He has consistantly made improvement. His teachers are highly committed and involved. Great community and a Great school!
I think Barnard is a great school, I myself attended the old Barnard an loved it! Both of my children attend now an they love the enviroment as well as the teachers. As all schools it does have its downfalls but the positives out way the negatives
I think Barnard is a wonderful school, I myslef attended the old Barnard and I must admit that was a very enjoyable time in my life. My grand-daughter is currently a student and she loves it, she enjoys school and thinks the world of her teacher, Ms. Christian I have observed her in the classroom and under the circumstances, I think she's done a remarkable job. Ms. Christian possess what a good teacher should and that is take pride in her job as a educator. However, there is a negitive side, I have watched the behavior of several students in my judgement shouldn't be in the class with their disruptive behavior, I feel that thay are take advantange of the students that are there to learn. The staff should provide the needed support.
Barnard Elementary School prepares children for real life situations. This starts from PreK to 5th grade. The Principal is highly involved with instruction, inservices for the teachers and knows each child and their capabilities.
Barnard Elementary provides a wonderful environment for a child to learn in. This newly built school is state of the art. Each and every classroom has at least four computers in it. The teachers go above and beyond the call of duty. Many of Barnard's teachers are like parents to a great deal of the kids. The males on the staff provide positive role models. For many of the students the males on the staff at Barnard are the only positive males they see or come in contact with. This is becuase more than half of the students at Barnard come from single parent households, run by women. The sports teams and afterschool programs provide the youth with an alternative to the streets. Instead of doing wrong the kids can direct their energies into something positive and worth while. Barnard aides me in bringing my son up in the right way.
