Sehome is an unfortunate place to send your high schooler. The principal is completely disconnected from the teachers and students. With few exceptions, the teachers have no control of the students in their classrooms. The students use their phones throughout classes and exams, come and go as they please, and are not afraid to tell their teachers to f-off because there are NO repercussions. Sehome has no school spirit. Bullying occurs between students...but also from "tenured" teachers and coaches. Legalized pot in WA made a bad school even worse. School counselors have very limited knowledge of any colleges outside of Bellingham. School counselors challenged our students to explain why they would ever want to go to college outside of Whatcom county. Small town mentality. Anyone who gives Sehome a high rating, or raves about their child's experience is either a staff member, on the PTA, or just plain clueless. If you have a choice, send your kids to Squalicum or Bellingham High. A shiny new school won't change a thing at Sehome. AWFUL FROM THE TOP DOWN.
I'm thoroughly impressed with the compassionate, competent, thoughtful teachers, administrators and counselors at Sehome. After coming from a private school experience and having children with both gifted and learning needs, I am overwhelmed by the quality and thoughtful education my children are receiving at Sehome. I'm so grateful for my children to have the opportunity to attend this school under the guidance of Mrs. Kuss-Cybula.
Typical public school - not stellar and not many great teachers. Principal cares mostly about her looks, not the 5 time/day arson on her campus or the educational accountability of her teachers. It works if you have low expectations of a the school in all regards.
