Our son loves Wahkiakum high school. We are happy that his classes are small and he knows everyone. We left Longview to get away from all the status issues and large classes.
I had a terrible time in Wahkiakum. As an overachieving student I felt more like an outcast because I was not an athlete and got treated poorly by teachers who favored the star athletes over the students of intelligence who worked hard to get good grades. Most of the teachers also were very poor in my judgment and had bounced around teaching different subjects for so long they didn't have a clue about their own subject. The only classes I recommend taking are those taught by Mr. Don Cox. Wahkiakum is not even recognized by many colleges as a satisfactory education. The best advice I can give you is to stay far away from Wahkiakum school and county in general.
This school fails to put emphasis on education, choosing instead to focus on its boys sports programs. Also this school is unfriendly and hard to work with for running start students. If you have a choice do not enroll your student in Wahkiakum schools!
My sons attended wahkiakum and received a fine education. They took all of the higher classes and during their four years there, I never heard a bad statement about any teacher. They also played three sports all four years and enjoyed it with their success. Now both my sons are in a 4 year universities and one is working towards his degree in sports medicine. I love Wahkiakum!
For the classes in the school itself, don't waste yours or your students time. The English and German departments are the only ones we did not have a great deal of trouble with. (Still had some.) This school is stuck in the sixties when it was built. If you are looking for a modern education that will prepare your student for the real world, turn and run! As said in previous comments this school has potential, but repeatedly turns a blind eye to it. My recommendation: STAY AWAY!
