Hiawatha has a growing problem. Because of the leadership in this school they can not keep experienced teachers. In 2001-2002, 62.5% of the teachers at Hiawatha had at least a Master's Degree this has dropped to 51.5% in 2005. For the new 2006-2007 school year 14 new teachers had to be hired. This is not because of high minority or poverty rates (many of the teachers leaving had worked their for over 20 years), this is because the teachers can no longer agree with what the leadership is forcing them to do to students on a daily basis. The school is not doing what is developmentally or emotionally right for children.
Hiawatha is an excellent school! Many children have gone through the school system in Othello, and Hiawatha is really going out there as the number one school for making growth. Kids love the principal, the staff, and are learning daily. Hiawatha is focused on reading and math, which is great! The reading scores are really on the rise and the programs they are using are great! The music program is excellent! Parents are involved in the school, but as a parent, it would always be nice to see more! Go Hiawatha!
