A few years ago, the Othello School District cut science, social studies and art out of the elementary schools to institute a two and a half hour reading program which has not increased our forth grade WASL reading scores. The 'Reading First' (K - 3rd) grant guildlines are used in all grades (K -6) and has our K - 3rd grade students spending more than half of their day 'reading' (which means phonics and language arts), not using books or the library in the reading program. The children in all grades (K - 6) who couldn't read before still can't read and hate reading now, and the children who could read before, don't want to either, because they are bored out of their minds.
