Both of my children attended SAAS and received an excellent education. They formed close relationships with multiple faculty members who truly care about them as human beings and as students. Supportive, strong sports and drama programs; creative arts opportunities abound: film, welding, ceramics...... The faculty are the kind of people that you want to have as role models for your kids. The administration tries out new strategies for working with kids; gives creative license to teachers to try new ideas. I am so happy both my children received such a fine education. They learned how to learn.
Seattle Academy pushes kids to try absolutely everything, to go outside of their comfort zones, even if they're not the best. This has been our first year at Seattle Academy and our daughter has grown so much since starting in the fall. We attribute this to the fact that she has tried so many new things, and applies herself everywhere. The teachers are some of the most encouraging people we have ever met. Now that the school year is coming to a close, we can confidently say enrolling our child in Seattle Academy has been the best educational choice we have made with our daughter.
I did not think that Seattle Academy was a good place for my kids. I thought the culture was permissive and elitist. I think that previledged kids are generally at risk of not learning to apply themselves because they already have access to the good life. SAAS does nothing to help with this dilemma.
Enrolling my child at Seattle Academy was the best investment of my life. The teachers, with a few exceptions, have been outstanding. The balance of academics, athletics, and the arts created an amazing environment that prepared her well for college. When you apply, ask about the Zambia trip, which is one of the most amazing opportunities available at any school in the area.
My child has been at SAAS since 6th grade and is now a senior. She was accepted and could have gone to several other top Puget Sound private schools. She has remained At SAAS largely because of its cadre of stellar teachers, and a very involved and student--focused administration. She and many of her friends are very academically oriented, national merit scholarship 'material' and are being challenged. The school also serves capable students with learning challenges more ably than any other private school, which is a plus. SAAS is not a perfect school...no school is and not every teacher is top notch. but it is a school that inspires kids to take risks and perform to their best ability while at the same time instilling personal responsibility for doing so.
10 things I love about SAAS. 1. The teachers truly care about each student. 2. The music, dance, theatrical and visual arts programs are a bridge to a future filled well rounded interests. 3. The humanities are brought to light with genuine enthusiasm. 4. Math is taught in a clear and relevant way. 5. Science springs from the pages of the text books, with hands on learning, in an energized class room. 6. School is taken out of the class room and into the real world with class trips and retreats. 7. The outdoors and travel programs nurture learning as well as adventure. 8. Sports create camaraderie on the field as well as in school. 9. It s a safe place to be yourself & stretch yourself & learn what you can contribute to the world. 10. SAAS is not just a school, it s a community. - a SAAS grad .
We are middle school parents and have been very impressed with SAAS. If you are looking at the top private schools in the city this will likely be your child's first choice when they come home from their interview. Well balanced curriculum, challenging academically, very high participation rate in their athletic and club programs.
Many students seem to think the school is an alternative school vs. a preparatory school. Many students choose to do the work while others are the typical 'I could care less' high school student. Sports program is excellent. The visual arts program receives high marks. As for parental involvement - if you are a liberal you'll fit right in.
My daughter went to this school for high school. It is an academically rigorous program with interactive, personal relationships between students and teachers. There is tremendous support for students from the faculty. When my student struggled with depression in tenth grade, all her teachers were supportive and accomodating. The arts are a strong focus here and are done exceedingly well.
