Mary Anne Murphy and Maureen Blum for their excellent work with our students, going the extra mile to ensure that no students are left behind. Bringing unique events and activities to their students like visiting lecturers, trips to Seattle for exposure to the arts, art docents, and field trips focused on social justice lessons.
Two teachers in particular stand out as especially effective. Mary Anne Murphy has demonstrated over and over her ability to teach with a great degree of differentiation, managing students with both supplemental learning needs as well as those with the need for enrichment. Maureen Blum also has demonstrated great ability to not only teach material, but make the material relevant to the current day and "real life" for her students.
Students are taught to respect not only their teachers but one another as well. There are a few problem students as you would fine anywhere, but interestingly enough the other students who witness the disrespectful behavior tend to then provide support for one another and their teachers, and recognize this behavior as unacceptable.
Through community service and the Peace Builder program, the students or opened up to the idea that the world is bigger than just their school and friends, and that it is in caring for one another that they can truly succeed as a team.
Students are taught to value one another as people, put integrity and hard work into their studies, and own their own mistakes. Our children have learned to value opportunities for all of the students in their cohort, apologize for wrongs and work together with their peers to find solutions.
