I've worked at several schools in the county and Highlawn is by far the BEST! The principal and staff are warm and welcoming and most of all they make kids their number one priority!

Our family has been blessed to be a part of Highlawn Elementary for many years. We have a child who has graduated from college, a child in their last year of college, and a child who is attending Highlawn Elementary. All three children have been a part of Highlawn since kindergarten. You will not find more kind, nurturing, or dedicated teachers. The learning environment at the school is positive and student focused. We are very pleased that our children have attended a school that found teachable moments to make learning fun and interesting.

I am a proud parent of a Highlawn Huskie graduate. I volunteered there for many years and saw first hand what a wonderful school Highlawn was. Parents were always welcome. The teachers treated the students like family. Teachers were always gracious and provided for students whose parents did not. My son had a great experience at Highlawn and still loves that school to this day. He is now a deans list junior at Marshall University majoring in chemistry and his early education started at Highlawn. I love the school, the teachers and staff!!!

Our school is welcoming and inviting. All the staff work together to provide a safe and nurturing environment for students, parents, school staff, and visitors. The community supports our efforts with their participation in PTO, fund raisers, and programs for our students. It is a wonderful place to work.

This school is wonderful. I have loved my time here and have learned so much from the other teachers who immediately made me feel welcome. This is a school filled with teachers who care about each other and every student, whether they are in their class or not. The principal is very hard working and treats students and staff with respect and kindness. I am blessed to be a part of Highlawn.

Need to keep parents more informed when events are occurring and have more school plays and things parents can do with children.

highlawn elementary : this school is only good if your child is without a disability, I have a child with special needs and rather than her teachers try to work with us; they look for the tiniest of faults with my daughter and immediately call cps on you @ the drop of a hat !, how ever i'm sure for other families this may not be the case. the prinicipal is a sort of take it or leave it person some like her others do not. they certainly could work on how they conduct things. and it is totally unprofessional for them to discuss their private family matters with everybody, if its not school related leave ur personal life @ home. this is why I personally am taking my child to another school ! ---frustrated parent

This is a wonderful school with great teachers and staff.I have been a student and my two children over the years. Now a new third generation has started at Highlawn and my niece and nephew have had great teachers and the teachers and staff have been a great support in some personal issues for their family over the last three years. Thank you all at Highlawn and keep up the great work

When I transferred to this school from Meadows Elementary, I was shunned and more or less tormented by my teacher for trivial things like not having my assignment book signed. It was a cold place. It didn't seem like a place for a child to be, and the children there seemed to reflect that. Hopefully it's changed by now, though...

My daughter has been going there for two years now and i have found the teachers to be exceptional. And with the assistance of jamie oliver, the lunch system is gaining ground in leaps and bounds to not only teach our children how to eat better, but how to be healthier in general! go highlawn! go huntington! and go jamie oliver!!!

We moved to Huntington in Sept. '08. I'm not sure if its because we came from a rural community or because my children are special needs but I feel something off at this school and I really hope that its not at every school in this county.

My name is Bonnie Franklin. Two of my 3 children attended Highlawn Elementary this past year. I want to say that I think that my children enjoyed learning in the classes they were in. My daughter was in Ms. Lopez and my son was in Ms. Halstead. I want to say that if there are any two teacher in the county that deserves recignition they are the ones. They both did a great job and as a parent I do appreciate them both.

Profile Completeness

HONOR ROLL

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
