**On a preliminary note, I would like to make the statement that my review is an evaluation on an absolute, rather than a relative, basis. My experience with Martinsburg High School has been one of cookie-cutter curricula and over-emphasized state testing. Fortunately though, the "teaching" (inculcation) process is well established, so there is little resistance. A majority of the teachers and administrators are highly unappreciative of their students' unique abilities, which ultimately leads to an "education" that is of little interest or utility for a child. Individualized education is something reserved for those lying on the extreme ends of the bell curve. The majority of students go through their daily lives with schedules consisting of their bare minimum graduation requirements, and little else. Let us not ignore the athletic and sport clubs that overrun the school. It seems that student athletes are both the idols and ambassadors of the institution, praised by teachers and their peers alike. Of course, this is along side the individuals who have scored a "distinguished" ranking on the WESTEST 2 and have their names etched on plaques in the main hallways.

The school has gone through many changes in the past years. Even though most of the students are not in favor of many of them, they have worked. The school is getting better. Some teachers are not at the standards they should be, but that is not fault of the school. I am currently a senior and I have had some phenomenal teachers and some horrid teachers. Overall I am content with my education I have received at this school.

This year, I will be a sophomore at Martinsburg High School. From the moment I walked in frehmen year, I loved this school. I have had a lot of very exceptional teachers, who taught above and beyond the curriculum. Over the years, MHS has received a bad reputation by the public, however our administration is top notch. If there is an issue with a student, they are right on it, and they make sure the problem is resolved. The administration has really stepped up with the "20 Essentials of MHS Students" banners, which hang throughout the facility. These banners include 20 etiquite tips, such as "Make eye conact when speaking to an adult", "Make visitors feel welcome to the building", etc. This is an excellent school that just deserves a better reputation.

Discipline, basic manners, and basic respect for others, start at home. Most parents blame school staff when their child lack in these areas. These parents should look into the mirror to find the root of the problem. If the parents who complain would worked WITH the staff , rather than against them, maybe there would be more harmony and problems solved. My oldest graduated from MHS, and my youngest is now a student there. We are very appreciative of their teachers, whose calling is to encourage these kids to be the best that they can be. Sometimes moreso than their own parents. A+ from me!

Martinsburg has the atmosphere for kids who WANT to learn and succeed. To the parent below me: the administration HAS turned the building around. Most of the uncertified subs have been cut and replaced by young new willing teachers. That s a good atmosphere. Another fact, last year had the lowest number of discipline problems and fights. Why? The administration has cracked down. No one stated sports were the priority, I am actively involved in 2 art programs and we win almost every year in three different states. The new admin just built a black box theatre under the school. Get your facts straight. Don t blame the teachers, there are more than a hundred of them, and I highly doubt you know every single one of them. There are many rumors, however, none are accurate. The people that refuse change are the key problem.

I am currently finishing up my freshman year at Martinsburg High School and I must say, this school is pretty amazing. Martinsburg is the place to send your student if you want them to have plenty of friends, but still focus hard on their school work. The teachers here work hard everyday to help us understand the lessons given to them by the state and to also make school a fun place to be. There are many different types of students here, elimnating judgement and racism. There are many opportunities for the students here to become involved in something - including our sports team that are known state wide. If you want your child to want to come to school, Martinsburg is the place to send them.

Martinsburg is a great school for those who want to achieve and do something in life. Most people put the school down, ignoring the kids who do care and achieve great success in school. To the person below, learn to read the test score results. A No Child Left behind test says nothing. It is an average. Do not judge everyone there based off the average test score, when there are people who get great scores. The MHS academic team has gone undefeated for what I believe 3 years in a row. That says something. The arts program also wins many awards. Martinsburg has the atmosphere for kids who WANT to learn and succeed. There are opportunities for everyone with many interest. Its not the schools fault kids choose not to do their best and its sad our government holds the schools accountable for it.

As the child of a military family, I have been in several schools and I must defend Martinsburg HIgh School as clearly the best school I have attended. It is a safe school, with caring teachers, and a diverse population. Like every school, some teachers rock while others just have rocks in their heads. Luckily all you have to do is ask and you can get in to good classes that are taught by excellent teachers.

The administration is disinterested in educating the students. SAT scores overall have been low, and not much geared toward developing a pre-college curriculum to assist in the transition to college. Overal teacher, administration, and guidance get a big fat D. This is due to working within a system not capable of producing bright college bound students. Mr. Pack is primarily the blame for his lack of ability to produce a winning school outside of athletics.

I have a neice and nephew who attend this school. They tell me of all the fights and things that are always going on in the school. Speaking of unqualified substitute teachers... All Berkeley County Schools have them, all you have to do is go fill out an app and take a little test. I dont believe this is right.

They have the best Academic overall view in West Virginia. They have a great athletic club such as basketball, football, and baseball. There principal show's firm discipline and day in and day out the students are taught.
