I regret sending my child to this school. It is a student community of theft, drugs, vandalism, prejudice, and profanity. Although some teachers are excellent, I've seen several bullying teachers! The school is way too old, falling apart, and I saw mold on the ceiling of the cafeteria one day (don't know if it's still there) Also I have a physical condition in which my son needs to stay home with me sometimes, and since MHS got its new principal there is no sensitivity and understanding towards absences. As the parent of a senior, I don't reccomend this school to any fellow parent!

Moorefield isn't the best school in the world. Not all the teachers like their jobs, and as students, we see that. We have scheduling problems. Seniors that have classes setting them up for failure; and when they try to get that changed, theres nothing they can do for them. The school itself isn't what you would expect. Sometimes the heat doesn't work, we sometimes don't have AC. Our board does nothing of this. We are treated as prisoners with the whole new referral system. I honestly think students don't feel comfortable there. With teachers that insult you and call you worthless? That is no place for a child. Getting on the sports topic, it isn't as bad as years passed, and it was the only thing that made school enjoyable.

The quality and diversity of courses has declined steadliy over the past 10 years. Atheletics is an important focus for the school, but in the past, stronger academic programs in Higher Math, Laboratory Sciences, English, and Music helped balance the focus. Extra-curricular activities are also very limited, but that is understandable given the student body and faculty size.

As a teacher, I feel that Moorefield has very strong, caring teachers and outstanding administration. I do feel that the conflict concerning 'athletics' is based on individuals rather than a school-wide problem. The school did take a hard hit this past year with the retirement of three outstanding educators, but continued outstanding newcomers like Mr. Hodges and Mrs. Riggleman are most helpful.

I think that the athletic department takes precedence over education at Moorefield High School. It's sad but true. There is nothing wrong with having a good athletic deparment but it shouldn't be more important than our childrens education. I think our school counselors are failing too in assisting and guiding children to apply for finacial aid and to go to college. I know that they are not incouraged, nor told that college could be a reality to children who think that they may not have a chance to go to college. Finacial aid is a wonderful thing and I think children should be aware that they could have this wonderful oportunity.

While many aspects of Moorefield High school are appealing such as it's personal atmostphere and committed teachers, it lacks a lot of qualities seen in other local schools that help the students achieve success. Many students as well as faculty believe that MHS promotes athletics more than academics. It's music and arts programs are failing. The building itself is in desperate need of repair and remodeling. Many utilities of the schools malfunction regulary. Hardy County Schools is working to fix the problems, but recent attempts for bonds have failed at the polls. The community needs to put it's youth in priority and start supporting more than the athletic programs.
