My children adore going to school each day. The Cooperative School is a wonderful secular school with small mixed age classrooms, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish instruction by native speakers, thoughtfully planned lessons that meet each child's individual needs, and an environment that is warm and creative. I can't imagine our lives without this elementary school!
This school combines both things most important to my family: low student-teacher ratio and a personalized curriculum. My son went from a class of almost 40 students to a class of five. I can't tell you what this means to me or to him, but I can say that his reading skills have increased dramatically in just a few months. His teachers can work with him, both academically and emotionally, on advancement and maturity. This individual attention is crucial to young learners. As a mother, I know that my son is in a safe, nurturing environment and I know he is getting the best education possible.
At The Cooperative School, our kids are in mixed-age groups of no more than 12. Because of this, our teachers are able to work with each child individually to learn at his or her own pace and style. Younger kids learn from the older kids, and the older kids learn by teaching the younger ones. The entire curriculum is integrated, so that during the recent unit "All About Me" they completed many projects together, from stretching a length of yarn across the room and measuring to the approximate length of their intestines, to creating their own personal timeline/historical record, to learning the names of body parts in Spanish and Chinese. The class schedule allows ample time for math, reading and writing and they work hard on these skills. Most important to me, this is a school where kids are respected and appreciated as individuals, and have created their own community. The Coop has a small, family atmosphere. I can't imagine doing it any other way in the primary years.
From the first day that our school started children, parents and teachers are working hard together and getting fantastic results. As a director it is an honor to work here with such an energetic and happy community.
A truly great school. Spectacular teachers. Small classes. Mixed-age groups. Children treated with respect and affection. Enlightened curriculum. Extraordinary in every way.
