People say that the school is horrible. People say it's fantastic. Honestly, it's in the middle. I'm a freshman, and have been there since 6th grade. I know that I'm learning a lot. Yes, there are fights. But it's MPS. It's going to happen. Most MPS schools have fights. I find that the, I suppose you could say, disturbed or distracting students don't disrupted the cycle of learning. In my opinion only 15% of students are distracting. But the other 85% have common sense and know how to ignore the situation. 99% of the time, situations don't turn into big things. Like I said before, I'm learning a lot. The trachers are awesome and know what they're talking about.
Anyone who says MSL is a bad school. Get your mind in gear! I'm a student there and its GREAT! I skipped a grade and i am welcomed into the sixth grade class like i'm 11! MSL is a great school and if you want to send your kids there, go for it! Soaring to sucess :)
MSL is not a good school what so ever. They dont teach us anything, they fight alot, a lot of drama, and the students that are behaving badly in class mess up the learning cycle for the good students. Kids skip class, yell at teachers. Man its sad. And I wish that I never step foot in MSL. If your thinking about having your child go there, you should have them shadow another student so that way they can see how it really is. Dont take a tour of the school together because you get to see a few seconds of how they are in the class room.
My son is in 8th grade and has a diability. His experience has been fantastic. All the kids get along with him and respect him for what he has gone through. As for school I feel the curriculm is challenging. My son is in the German program since 4 K. I know that his level of German instruction is far better than any school he could go to. The staff is very helpful and flexible with the kids when deserved. The principal is strong and over all I feel the school is very safe and well controlled. I pick up my son every day and have never seen anything beyond kids having a good time outside of school. Finally I have felt that MSL is a wonderful example of how all kids from many different backgrounds, races and nationalities can come together and be friends and sork together.
Though it is a great school for learning a second language and the courses for foreign language are much more advanced than most, as a former student I feel the need to speak up about how intimidated I felt at this school. While several security guards were put in place to help control the violence, they only increased the feeling that there was a personal threat to me in the building. While I progressed greatly in my French education, I was hindered in many other subjects and felt lost during the first few months in a new high school. Also, the arts are GREATLY lacking. I was disappointed by the art and music curriculum, which left me with very little improvement in both subjects.
this is a great school for all 6 graders and up! i love this school!
Our daughter attended this school for 7 years. She earned enough AP credits and was proficient enough in French to finish UW in 4 years with a major and a minor. Could have finished in 3.5 years if one requirement for the major had been offered in the fall instead of spring only. She is now in grad school using experiences helping in the library there.
I had one child who went here all 7 years and another who is in her 4th year and it was a great place for them. The school is small enought that staff know and care about the kids yet they offer music, sports, and advanced placement classes. Also I understand they are now starting a new bullying program in the middle school and a planned portfolio for students to help in college placement. Also they are one of the few MPS gih schools with an active Parent/Teacher/Student Assn.
'Both my children have gone to MSL since they were 11 years old. MSL is a school where the children come first. Each child is encouraged to do their personal best without being labeled as the smart or dumb kids. The teachers are highly skilled and work hard to bring out the best in each child. The principal is kind and knows each child by name. She is a great example of a leader and I will miss seeing her everyday as my daughter graduates next year. Thank you MSL for bringing out the best in my children and giving them the encouragement and confidence they need to go out into the world!
I have a senior and a 7th grader at this school and its terrific. My kids are hispanic and fit right in with Asians, Blacks, Whites, etc. It is a good ethnic mix, it is small and seems like a private school because the turnover is very low. That means the students and staff really get to know each other. Academics are very high and getting to know a second or even third language well is such a plus in this world. Sports and music and art are great additions, every gets a chance to play as they always need more participants at the H.S. level. Chess has won many awards. Despite budget cuts still have orchestra, band and chorus and after school activities. Teachers dedicated to the students. Active PTSA and parents involved on school council.
I lived in the last school year 2002/2003 as an exchange student from Germany for one year in Milwaukee, WI. My host parents decided to send me to MSL. In MSL I met so many nice, lovable people who I know will be friends forever. Still I have to say that this school is a small school with not a lot of money. Sport is not a main topic in this school, and school spirit is too much for them. This was a little bit disappoining but otherwise I had the best year of my life. I got the best support I could wish for from my teachers!
