After 3 years at Sebs, I had to remove my child due to the rampant bullying and the administration's refusal to do anything about it but blame the victim. Last year, at Sebs, she once again scored very low on state testing, scoring so low in math that she was diagnosed with a math learning disability. I had asked for help for her for years, but got nowhere. I know now that it was the bullying and environment, as after a semester at her new school, with the same demanding curriculum, she not only scored in the upper 10th percentile overall on state testing, but achieved the second highest score in Math for her entire grade! At Sebs, she got C 's, D 's and U's. Right now, she is averaging a 3.5 grade point average. She is happy, outgoing and has a strong group of friends - very important for 7th grade - and a huge difference from the sad little girl who hated school last year. I have talked to many parents regarding their bullying experiences at Sebs, and everyone says the same thing - administration does nothing. As a church, it's great. But I would not recommend sending your child to school here.
St. Sebastian School has a terrific culture of kindness and giving. The parent and community volunteers give time and incredible talent in many ways to make the school unique. These 'extras' include: High Interest Day, Art Show, Athletics, Forensics, Chess Club, Theater, and so much more. St. Sebs teachers bring challenging and interesting lessons that help my kids learn about the world and the Wisconsin and Milwaukee community. They have high expectations which helps all of St. Sebs students to become resilient, hard-working. thoughtful, compassionate individuals of character. The diverse student body brings even more culture and experiences and, as a result, more opportunities for learning. St Sebastian School is teaching children of families from five continents. It is a welcoming, wonderful environment for all.
At Sebs teachers work well with students and parents to help students reach their full potential. Parents are an active volunteer base for both church and school. The student body is diverse and class sizes are smaller. There are a handful of field trips each year and the students take library (1x), art (1x), gym (2x) and music (2x) during the week. Scouting programs are also strong at our school/parish. Middle school students are able to participate in Forensics, track, volleyball and basketball (5th-8th grades). Luckily we live w/i walking distance but I know that for most of our parents who work downtown Sebs is an easy stop on the way to work in the morning. Also there is a well established before/after school program (PAL). The school open house is always the last Sunday in January BUT you can really come visit the school anytime. Sebs participates in the CHOICE program with no differentiation between the Choice and non-Choice students as far as I can see. Sebs follows a dress code which makes it easy to get ready for school in the morning AND to keep the students on an equal basis. Not sure what else to say but give Sebs a look!
St. Sebastian's school is a stellar choice, and there's nothing better in Milwaukee (believe me, I looked!). The teachers are super dedicated and work hard to maximize every student's potential. The school administration is very professional and exceptionally personable and accessible to parents. I have found the staff and administration to be quite communicative are always available to meet parents and swiftly address questions or concerns, both big and small. Most importantly, there is a dedicated community of positive, welcoming, and hard-working group of parents that support the school; student's needs are met from a 360 perspective. It was important to me to send my child to a school that offered a diverse student body and there are students at the school from all different backgrounds and parts of the Milwaukee demographic. Overall, this school exudes unity and collaboration. I feel good knowing that when my child leaves for school in the morning, they will be well looked after and truly cared for at school. I also feel great that my child is not only receiving an excellent academic education, but also a sound development of personal and moral character.
St Sebastian is a great school. My son attended from k4 to 8th grade and he loved it. He is a above average student thanks to St Sebastian.
I currently have a 2nd grader and a kindergartner at St. Sebs, as well as 3 year old who attends the PAL preschool (my older children attend the PAL afterschool program several days a week as well). St. Sebs is an extraordinary community of talented and dedicated teachers, wonderful parents, and neat kids. I am confident that my children are getting both an excellent education and a wonderful foundation in values, in a safe, caring and diverse community.
I love St. Seb's School, I have two kids in the school, one in grade school and one in Middle school, buth of my children have stuggled at different times in thier acedemic life but most of th eteachers have gone above and beyond to help them. I have been told that my kids (independantly) are the kindest children. That comes from the loving environment they are in.
Our kids have attended St. Sebastian from K4 through 8th grade. 2 of them are now at DSHA. Their experience at St. Sebastian was outstanding. Sebs prepared them very, very well for a rigorous honors curriculum in high school. The level of parent involvement is amazing. Sebs offers a variety of extras including a school play, forensics, sports, service opportunities and more.
Great academics and teaching staff, good extracurriculars with a strong forensics and drama program. Parents are welcoming. We made a very deliberate and thoughtful decision to move here. However, this is not a place a middle school aged student should transfer to as a culture of bullying exists. My child has been constantly verbally and physically bullied since moving to this school. Administration was notified immediately to no avail. The harassment policy is not followed. We even contacted the parish priest who did not respond. We now have been told by a number of parents that their children or others they know of have been bullied here. This could be a great school if this problem was addressed but we can not wait for this to happen at the expense of our child. As our once outgoing, confident child says 'I'm not the same kid I was as when I started here'.
I've been at St. Sebastian since I was four and I went to PAL for a year before that. I love St.Sebs and I think the teachers are wonderful.
This is my tenth year at Seb's, not including the one year I spent in PAL before I started kindergarden, and I LOVE IT! I really wouldn't rather be anywhere else. Although it may not be the most challenging school academic wise, the people there have so much heart, and they've helped me to become a better person.
A great school with dedicated teachers in one of the City's best neighborhood. Graduates go on to do some great things in life, including being the Mayor.
This is the best school in the Milwaukee - Wauwatosa area for younger childern with child care needs. The middle school is challenging and interesting to the students. The charater education is one of the most important aspects of thier formation in todays society. People often comment on how kind and polite my childern are. I wouldn't have them anywhere else.
My daughter came out of Seb's well-prepared for the expectations of high school. There is a wealth of talent associated with this school, the teachers, the staff, the parents, the alumni. Lots of great stuff happening here in a strong, faith-filled environment.
I love this school they reward academic achievments and the teachers are very sociable.
St. Sebastian is a great school! The staff are easily accessible for any issues that may arise and the families are always welcome to participate in school activities. As with any school it takes parental involvement. Don't expect any school to guess what you or your child needs. If I need any resources the school will accommodate or show me the path. My child is safe at this school and there is a great before and after school child care (PAL) that accommodates a busy working parent's schedule. Kudos goes to St. Sebs!
The school goes out of its way to assist younger students who struggle; but once (s)he hits the middle school either they better have made up any lost ground or prepare for one heck of a time. The teachers in the upper grades are totally unprepared and unwilling to accomodate any but the average and high functioning student, unfortunately.
I really beg to differ about the struggling student. I have a struggling student currently at St.Sebs. Sebs have been working with my child since K5. He is making steady progress. Thanks St. Sebs for caring about the success of my child.
If your child is average or struggling, this school will not help at all. The teachers do not extend themselves beyond what is required by the curriculum - which means there is no cultural relevance or extra help given. While teachers may hear your input, they will not listen. This school does not put its students first.
We transferred to this school a few years ago from another Catholic school that went through a lot of student/teacher turnovers in just a short period. As a parent I am satisfied in the foundation being taught through the curriculum and the diversity of the student body. Yet the schools one flaw is its lack of diversity in the curriculum.
