HONOR ROLL

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

If you are a parent who wants to be involved, this is the school for you. Students learn true independence. By 3rd grade, if a student wants to go to a library, he is responsible for filling out a form, finding a chaperone (from an approved list) figuring out which bus you will take and the times it picks up and returns. It is truly an environment where all children feel cared about by the entire staff. I could go on all day about how amazing this school it. It is a blessing and a gift that I will forever be thankful for. The only negative thing is that there is no high-school. This school doesn't talk the talk, it walks the walk and it teaches the children to walk the walk by setting the example. Recently they had a school play. After closing night, many families stuck around to help clean up and students of all ages were encouraged and allowed to help use power tools (with supervision) to help take apart the stage. Everything is a learning experience. When my son was 5, I was visiting the class he spilled something all over the floor. I said "Look at the mess you made" the teacher replied "He didn't make a mess, he made an opportunity to use a broom."

Highland Community School is FANTASTIC! It's not only the way a school should work, but also the way a community should work. Highland Community requires parent involvement. This means that the only kids that are going to go to the school are kids with parents that WANT to be involved. Because of this, the contention that you might see in other schools between parents and teachers is minimized. Instead, they work as a team. I see my the teachers of my children every day, so I don't have to wait until parent teacher conference day to find out how my kids are doing. I KNOW how they're doing every day. We are so lucky to have found this gem of a school in a fairly large city. We get it all. Diversity, community, teamwork and friendship!

We are new to Milwaukee having moved here from a small town up north. Our 8 yr old son had just spent a year participating in a multi-age class and his growth had been great, so we were a bit concerned about finding (and affording) equal or better quality education. Many people in our neighborhood - some current parents and some empty-nesters - that we should consider Highland Community School. We are so glad that we listened because our experience at Highland has been great. The parents are super involved. The teachers are super involved. Both of my children love going (3rd grader and 3K-er) and the transition from small town to big city has been smooth in large part due to the easy acceptance my children found at Highland Community School.

Highland Community School is surely one of a kind. The teachers/staff are awesome and truly care about the well being of the children. The parents know each other and our children and it is truly a family. I would highly recommend Highland to anyone. If anyone asks me about this school I rave about how great it is. It is unfortunate that the great school rating is not reflect an actual assessment of this school.

Highland Community School is a place where children, teachers, administration and parents all come together in a common goal--to give our children the highest quality education we can, while teaching to the WHOLE person. The Highland Community School kids are not just learning their 123s and ABCs, but they are learning kind, compassionate global citizens. I could not ask for a better school for my children.

Highland is a fantastic school. My son started in their toddler program and intend to keep him at Highland through 8th grade. I have been impressed with the knowledge and skills he has developed. He is in K5, but has been "writing" stories and reading since last year in K4. He adds, substracts and knows the basic idea of multiplication. I am fully satisfied with the academic rigor Moreover, we are transplants to this city and the community at Highland is more than I could have hoped for. The families are welcoming and the kids have a solid sense of what it means to be a good citizen within the community. Highland is working to align the Montessori methods with the State's common core standards. This will only improve it's face to the outside community.

HCS is more than a school. It's a community. The teachers are genuinely invested in student success, and encourage the students to achieve at the highest levels. The student body comes from a wide range of Milwaukee neighborhoods and community, and everyone had the same goal: to put our children first.

Highland is a gem! It's a place where authentic learning is individualized for each child. A place where kindness and social justice are emphasized. We love the diversity, the committed parents and teachers, the welcoming atmosphere, and the high levels of critical thinking our children engage in daily.

HCS is a school that empowers both parents and students to be a part of the learning process. We work together to grow our programs, fix our building, assist our teachers to help our kids succeed.

Highland Community School is more than a school. It is a movement. It is a community of families committed to making our society a better place to live, and working with our children to become healthy and active members of our greater community. The parent involvement at Highland is impressive, it's one of the only schools where all of the Board of Directors must have children enrolled. All parents commit to volunteering with the school when they enroll their children and almost all go far above and beyond that initial commitment. The dedication and hard work demonstrated by parents and staff is what makes Highland such a wonderful school to be a part of. Families support and help each other and have a genuine care for each other. Highland is truly a gem in Milwaukee, WI.

This school is like no other. Everyone has a stake, everyone is involved: student, parents and staff. Tremendous leadership and faculty. Most importantly, I have never seen a school with this much heart and soul.

Highland is a place where creativity, kindness and tools for life are taught in a safe and nurturing environment. Each day I am incredibly happy to send my children to Highland. It is truly a school that other up and coming schools should look at as a model. Thank you, Highland teachers! We love you!

My daughter is new to Highland in their Children's House (3yr old) program. My husband and I are very impressed with the dedication of the teachers and administrators at this school. You can see that they care and are always present with a warm hello in the mornings. The teachers are all engaged and accessible, and the parent involvement is awesome. If you want your child to receive a quality education, and are interested in an authentic Montessori education, you will not be disappointed with this school. Our daughter leaves each day excited with what she has learned and every morning bounces out of bed happy with what the day will bring. Love it!

This school is a success because of all the involved parents. This is a school parents choose and therefore are more likely to be involved in their child's education. It makes the school feel like one big family. You can be confident that all the grown ups have your child's best interest at heart. They also care for each child's development as a whole, not just academically, but emotionally and socially as well.

Highland is a public Montessori, parent-run charter school, representing the best of many worlds. Children are encouraged to discover their potential, and are supported in their pursuit of their academic interests. The school community is nurturing and motivated, and parents are recognized as instrumental in their children's education, and empowered to take action! My child has been here since 18 months, now a 4th grader, and I wouldn't want her anywhere else.

Highland Community School is a public charter Montessori School that has served a central city Milwaukee neighborhood for more than 40 years. We are parent run, with each parent contributing a minimum of 36 hours of time to the school per academic year. In addition, many of our students have parents who are alumni or current or former employees of Highland.

Highland Community School is a diverse Montessori school in the heart of Milwaukee. The school body is comprised of diverse students, teachers, and staff that make Highland one of the best schools in the city. I have 3 little ones that are currently attending Highland and have been there since they were 18 months old. I love how the curriculum works with each student in a way that all students can learn and grow.

It's home away from home quality. Every child is given the opportunity to grow & thrive in their own unique way! It's truly a parent-run school - we do it all from preparing classrooms for the children via parent work day. Roll up your sleeves, when there are walls to paint - we paint 'em; if there are things to fix - we fix 'em. Parents invest their sweat, skills & talents in our school with the reassurance that the staff and teachers do the same to our kids. There is no place in the world like Highland Community School.

We absolutely love Highland! It truly is a home away from home not only for our children, but for us as well. Teachers and fellow parents are people we consider friends. All children get what they need to grow and succeed, we pool resources, strengths and talents to make Highland the greatest school- and we're darn proud of it!

I really appreciate the teachers at highland and their willingness to make the extra effort to support and nuture thier students. It is a wonderful place to help children develop their love for learning. I choose Highland because I knew that my child would be challenged by the new, encourged to build on her strengths and develop in the areas of weakness. I encourage parents who believe that education should be holistic in its approach in order to have community members that are self-reflective, intelligent and thoughtful when making life decisions.

We adore Highland. Highland Community school is just that, a community. My children arrive everyday excited and happy. We are greeted by the lovely students parents and teachers. Highland is a beautiful environment. I never feel lost or out of place, neither do my kids. Miss Pat is incredible, my kids have matured and learned so much from her. Miss Susan is friendly and sweet. Miss Karen keeps everything together, running smoothly, and makes us all feel like we are at home. Oh, and we love Notes Home! Few schools take the time and effort to keep families updated but Highland does. I feel like Highland is the little MPS school that could. My kids would be at a private school if we had not found Highland, and we are all so glad we did.

This school is amazing! If you are looking for a warm, nurturing environment for your child to learn then you have found that at Highland. When you send your children to school at such a young age, you want to make sure they get the care you would give them if you could be there and at Highland that is what each child receives. I know that my children are not just learning about reading, writing and math, they are learning how to work with all types of people. When you become a Highland parent you receive another family. We absolutely love it here!

Highland is simply amazing. There is no other way to put it. The students learn like at no other school, they are given individual attention and are allowed and encouraged to learn at their own pace. My daughter LOVES her school and loves the after-school violin lessons just as much. This school is just wonderful. I walk in the morning and am greeted by the always friendly, always welcoming Miss Karen. She makes my daughter feel at home if she is having a rough day, and her office is a popular hotspot in between classes, as she is so warm and welcoming and has great toys for the kids to play with. At 8:30 my daughter goes to her classroom with Miss Jean and Wendy. She has a lovely day of learning and then, on Mondays and Wednesdays, she heads to violin lessons, which she loves. We LOVE Highland!

This is a hidden jewel! MPS has great schools if you know where to look for them. Because this is a family centered school, no child falls through the cracks. Every child is nurtured and loved. I am so thankful they are adding fourth - eigth grades. Now my children can stay until high school.

If you enroll your child at Highland don't expect to just drop her off in the morning and pick her up at night. You are enrolling the entire family! This is true parent involvement and the rewards are amazing. Your children will thrive and they will know how much you value their education. I don't think you can find a better school in the city!

Our daughter started at HCS at 18 months old in the toddler program. We are thrilled with the toddler teacher, Jennifer and her teaching assistants. We have been extremely pleased with our daughter's development over the last 2 years since she has attended HCS. We really like that HCS is a parent run school. It allows us to be involved & to meet other like minded parents with children of a similar age. I have been pleased to see many teachers send their children to HCS. The school is impressively well integrated & we feel good that our daughter is getting exposure to interact with friends and adults from many different walks of life.

The decision to send our toddler to HCS was the best one we could've made. The Montessori environment has allowed her to develop a level of independence that gives her to confidence to want to do things on her own rather than looking for someone to do them for her. We don't believe she would have developed to this level had she been in a traditional daycare. From day one we felt as if we were a part of the HCS family. The opportunities all parents to get involved in the school are plentiful so it's hard not to feel like family. If you're looking for a top notch environment for your child, look no further - Highland Community School is it!

This is a public Montessori school. I have two children attending at this time. I love the close knit feeling of the school. It is very diverse and my children love going to school. They just began this year and they already feel such a great feeling of accomplishment. They come home and tell me what they have learned so far (in kindergarten). The teachers are wonderful and always ready to work with you to make sure your child receives the best education. I love it! Wish there were more schools like this.
