Woodlands East has given my son the opportunity to learn about various cultures, participate in a variety of learning experiences that he is able to comprehend without constant instructions. My son has awesome teachers who work with him to better understand what is expected of him daily. The school is a wonderful community that reaches out to all no matter race, ethnic background, religion, economic status, etc... I love the "Woodlands Way" it's the best way to go!

My feelings about Woodlands are mixed. While I do feel there are many positive aspects of the school, the consistency in which the teachers seem to deal with students needing extra attention varies from year to year (unit to unit). When it comes to discipline, I feel that there is an overall lack thereof. I have to seek out information from teachers regarding my child's behavior, in-class progress, etc., despite my repeated requests to stay informed when problems arise. (I can't work on problems at home if I don't know they exist). Perhaps it's a general 'fear' of the use of discipline that has overcome the school system in this day and age, probably due to repercussions and parent/public backlash, but if my child misbehaves, doesn't complete their work, talks excessively during class, etc., I expect there to be some consequences from his teachers. On the positive side, Woodlands is far better than any 'regular' MPS school my child would be able to attend. Their approach to curriculum is unique, and unique is, in my opinion, far better than the bare minimum that other comparable schools scrape by with

Woodlands offers a well rounded education for our son. In addition to french twice a week he has music, gym and art. The Woodlands teachers are engaged and work together well to nurture each individual students approach to learning. The school combines grade levels so students can work to their individual levels. It is one of the most naturally diverse schools in the city of Milwaukee. There is a great parental connection that we as a family cherish. I know that the friends my son has made and the friends we have made at Woodlands are life long friends. We all care about each other and isn't that what it's all about? I know we made the right decision to send our son to Woodlands. It is a wonderful school.

I have to qualify my review by saying that this is our first year here. That said, I am so impressed with the school thus far, and so relieved that our children are being educated here. We looked at many schools. What makes Woodlands different (and better): multi-age classrooms and impressive differentiation across all subjects means that each child is working on material at his/her level. The caliber of instruction in both gen ed and "specials" has blown us away. In the gen ed classroom, teaching methods are progressive and integrated (ie, a reading and science lesson that also involves an art project). There is a lot of time devoted to music, art, gym, French, and library, and the specialists are extraordinary. The character curriculum is wonderful and reinforces our home values. Families seem welcoming, invested, and diverse. This school offers our kids the best of what a public education can be, which, in this day and age, is nearly impossible to find.

My daughter has been at Woodlands School since she was in K4 and now she is in 6th grade. I really love the student diversity, curriculum, staff and students. We are all like a family. I really like that there are no behavior issues with students. The staff overall is very efficient and effective in resolving issues in general. I really like that the school has an active PTA where parents are the driving force in supporting the school. I like that they are inclusive of all students. I highly recommend it to family and friends. I am always promoting the school when people are looking for a school for their young child.

Woodlands School has a caring staff. They work hard to meet the diverse needs of students and families. Families at Woodlands value quality education and children at Woodlands receive one the best educations available in the city. As a special educator, I am able to see most of our classroom teachers and specialists in action on a regular basis as I support and observe my students. I've been an educator since 1974, and what I see at Woodlands is far superior to what I have observed in other schools I have been at over the years. The good thing is we are all working to make Woodlands even better.

The school itself is decent. Even though the school claims that it is very "family-oriented" it really isn't. Most of the families & staff act very stuck up, and snotty--I mean come on---we all poop! I always feel obligated to justify myself for every time my son "misbehaves. " Then on top of that I am still stuck paying $$$, when they don't even seem excited to have my child attend! My son still isn't happy attending it, I have to force him up in the morning (class begins at 8:15am, other schools @ 9am) the teachers seem like overly-sensitive robots and everyday I believe I'm getting complaints about SOMETHING! LITERALLY! And in all honestly the building itself needs a lot of working on doesn't seem to fit state approvals, the playground---wait what playground/parking-lot, the underground tunnel, certain classrooms, etc. etc. And when are you ever going to really use your french language? And what building a child's motor skills too with some serious sports? The only thing sorta nice is the personal attention some of the students may receive as it would differ if students attended a public school.

Been a Woodland's Parent for 13 yrs. Have been through ups and downs. Not a perfect school but a fairly good school. Very family orientated. Love that the office and teaching staff know you by name. Looked into possibly changing schools at one point when i thought we needed a change. Once visiting other schools, Woodland's remained the better choice. I would recommend Woodland's School to my family and friends.

You just wait until your son goes to a higher grade and have a talk to the social worker. Ha! let me know if she is willing to help. At first they gain your trust and then... you'll see. Good luck. Woodlands use to be a proficiency and caring school. Have you heard of the bowmen's programs or something like that?? what is good about it? let me know if he helps too.

Woodlands is a high-diversity, high-standards, high-performing urban school. They are learner-centered and practice many different authentic methods of assessment. Students are happy and kind to each other. Parents are welcomed and expected to be involved in the school. Teachers are friendly, considerate, and curious about each student's growth. We love Woodlands for our children's education!

This is a wonderful school. Its philosophy supports character development, community building, social skills, and mutual respect as well as academic achievement. It provides a calm nurturing environment with space for individual learning styles and enables children to feel safe to explore new things. The teachers are nurturing and have the desire and time to reach out children's unique needs. Truly the best.

3rd & 8th grade 2012-2013 WKCE reading scores are appalling 45.6%. Math is 78.2%- nothing to brag about! Stop patting yourselves on the back, teachers, administrators should be ashamed of these scores. Also agree with post below that discipline is arbitrary and inconsistent.

My daughter completed her first year at Woodlands in K4 and we are so pleased with the school. We could not have chosen a better school for her in Milwaukee. Very rarely will you find a diverse, public school that teaches French in K4, as well as gym, art, music, and library. The school environment is very nurturing and empasizes strong academics. The older students are caring and serve as role models to the younger kids that you can't help but love the school. It is such a positve experience seeing my daughter looking up to the 8th grade cadets walking her out to the car every day after school. Great parents, students, and staff that appreciate diversity!

My children attend Woodlands School...In the beginning I was VERY pleased with the school. Over the years, I have grown to have somewhat of a displeasure for certain things in the school. For example the way a child is reprimanded. I feel that you can't have a "One Way" standard of discipline for all offenses. Some punishments don't fit the crime. Also the school could be more FAIR in the treatment of children and not pick favorites because they either have a family member working there or because they know somebody that knows somebody. I personally have seen this type of behavior from teachers and administration alike. Academically the school is EXCELLENT,but the Guiding Principles "The Woodlands Way" is taught but not practiced. I firmly believe in "Practice What You Preach". Hopefully...this feedback will be inspire some changes.

I am so happy that we chose Woodlands School for our daughter! She is getting a great education there ... academically, socially, and emotionally! The teachers all have high expectations for the students, but are also caring enough that they work with the students to meet these expectations and help them succeed. My daughter is an advanced learner, and they quickly identified her strengths and give her extra attention in those areas to really nurture her talents. The staff also works at creating a caring environment so that my daughter always feels loved and safe. I also love how involved all of the parents are ... it creates a wonderful, truly unique school environment.

Woodlands schools is an exceptional elementary school in the city of Milwaukee. The diversity among students and families helps to create a rich learning environment. I have worked in the education field for over 15 years and have been in schools and classrooms in many districts around the state. The instruction at Woodlands is rigorous and promotes problem solving, critical thinking and creativity. The teachers foster the development of positive peer relationships and self esteem. My daughters are incredibly happy and successful at Woodlands School.

My children attend this school and are given the attention they need and deserve. Ignore those that talk about needing new gym shoes and textbooks, because there are legitimate reasons for it. 1. The gym floor is new, paid for by an individual that runs a basketball program in the gymnasium. He requires the new shoes, as the gym floor is the same quality as the Bradley Center. 2. When one my children was getting behind on reading, they offered a free after school reading program lasting an hour at no additional cost to us. 3. There are about 20 - 25 students per class, and each class has a teacher and an assistant teacher. 4. The children are largely polite, courteous, and very well behaved. 5. There is so much demand to get into this school that they are looking to open another Woodlands. The current principal will head the new school, and the new principal is a teacher who has transformed my child beyond my expectations. 6. The parent community is very good. Some are not, but most are very open and friendly. 7. Yes, there are photocopied assignments, but we work with our kids to see that they get done. The school has an excellent library. I could go on. At the limit.

teachers are unispired robots. They follow the curriculum whims of the day. Teaching "estimating long hand division?" This is contradictory and the math teacher confessed that it was just something to teach in the curriculum and the students would never use it. Well, of course this was obvious to all of us. Busy work to give children. What is taught at Woodlands on a daily/weekly basis can be achieved in one month. No substantial learning. This school is appealing to those who do not know better. The yearly "hoots" and "buzzes" are bizarre. The principal is lazy and laissez faire

I agree with the last parent who posted a review. If you have the perfect child Woodlands may be a great school. My son attended Woodlands from Kindergarden until the 3rd grade. That's when trouble happened and he was expelled without much effort to find a solution. He did well at his other schools and is currently attending UW-Madison, but it was a very bad experience for our family.

Woodlands is as good as it gets. My son started struggling at another school following our divorce, and the only 'solutions' the head of school and staff there would consider involved prescription drugs. We sent him to Woodlands, where they understand that every child has special needs. His performance and social life steadily improved WITHOUT USING DRUGS, and he is now a flourishing honor student at a top college prep school.

Woodlands retains the feel of a small private school. My daughter is in 5th grade and benefits from having three teachers, each with a particular area of expertise. Teachers bring creativity to each of these subjects through interactive lessons supported by a traditional curriculum. The student community is based on mutual respect, teamwork and lending a hand when needed.

Woodlands is such a great school. All grades have a primary teacher and an assistant (who is usually a certified teacher)which makes for low teacher student ratios. The faculty and staff are first rate. They care about the kids as if they were family. They allow for lots of parent involvement. My son loves it and I look forward to sending my twins there. It is the best school around.

My children have been at Woodlands for a total of 8 years and I highly recommend this school to anyone who wants a small school (around 250 students in K4 - 8th grade)with high parental involvment and which provides both racial and socioeconomic diversity of the student body along with a progressive, project - based approach to learning where individual needs or attributes can be addressed. The school recognizes the importance of the arts in education and integrates speciality programs in Music, Art, French, Library and Physical Education into the curriculum for all of the children in the school. The school does an excellent job of making learning fun and developing critical thinking skills. The staff all know you and you get a sense that they truly care about meeting your child's needs.
