% Free Lunch: This number shows the percent of students in each school that participate in the federal free and reduced price lunch program. This statistic is often used as a measure of socio-economic status for schools, where a higher number indicates that a school has more low income families.
When comparing schools, however, use caution when looking at schools with different grade levels. As students get older, they are less likely to participate in the lunch program, so high schools typically have lower rates than middle and elementary schools, even though family income levels may be similar.
