Here’s how to do it
Tell your child you’ll be exploring living things and nonliving objects. Explain that in science “living” refers to anything that is, or has ever been, alive (log, cat, plant). “Nonliving objects” include anything that is not now, nor has ever been, alive (car, computer, rock). Explain that living things need food, water, space and shelter to survive.
With your child, brainstorm a list of living things and nonliving objects. Discuss what the differences are between them. On a piece of paper write the headings Living and Nonliving. Walk inside and outdoors to find living things and nonliving objects. Have your child decide which category to place each one in and jot them down on the paper.
