learning ABCs

My 3 1/2 year old does not know any of his letters yet. He doesn't really like working with flash cards and doesn't seem to be learning his letters from our puzzles or books, either. Should I be worried? My older son was learning to read by this age! Any tips for how to teach the ABCs? Thanks!

I would worry just yet because kids learn at different rates. But if I were you I would keep this in the back of my mind. I have two sons. My oldest was a late talker and had a hard time with ABC's in Kinder and 1st grade. He was diagnosed with ADD and Dyslexia. He was not reading in the 1st grade --- everyone was passing him up and he continued to struggle. We pulled him out of the public school and sent him to Marburn Academy in Columbus, Ohio. I am so fortunate to have this school here. He started Marburn in the 2nd grade and was reading in six weeks. He is now in 4th grade and reading beyond his grade level. As a mother you know when something is not right. Even at the age of 2, I knew something was different. I am so glad I did not give up. Stick with your instinct. Good luck to you and your little one!

Take a look at this web site and see if it helps you help your child start to develop her pre-reading skills:

I also loved starfall.com.
