In this activity your child learns about various plant parts and then makes — and eats — a healthy salad full of seeds, roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits.

What you’ll need

  • Paper
  • Pen or pencil
  • A variety of edible plant parts
  • Salad bowl
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Forks
  • Salad dressing (optional)

Here’s how to do it

Explain to your child that every plant has different parts such as: seeds, roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruit. Talk about what each plant part does and why each part is important to the plant. On paper list the parts of the plant and, under each part, list examples. For instance, under “leaves” you’d write “lettuce” and “spinach.” From this list, come up with a shopping list of edible plant parts. Mix the plant parts together in a salad and enjoy!
