Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Good teachers but office staff can be rude. Principal is rude too and the morning traffic is terrible and the school doesn't seem to care.

HES is the BEST!! Words cannot begin to describe what a blessing the Teachers, Faculty, Counselors, Specialty Teachers (Art, Computer, Music, Library), even the Cafeteria & Janitorial staff, have been during my son's 1st year of school. Now he's registered for 1st grade & we have full confidence that this year will be just as wonderful as last year!! Thank You HES(:

I have had two children go through the Helena Schools and was very pleased with the results. I just want our schools to have the tools to teach the kids as they did when my children were there. Our State has cut out all funds to the classroom and they have no way to buy supplies they need and this would really help them. Every teacher needs a fighting chance.

We were apprehensive about sending our daughter to a public school with a special need, but the teachers and staff there really embraced the need and meet the need resulting in my daughter loving school to the point of wanting to be a teacher. I have always been taught that teaching kids is not the difficult part. Inspiring them to want to learn is. The teachers and staff there have accomplished this.

Besides my child receiving an outstanding education which by the way surpassed the education she was receiving in a private christian school? I have been amazed at how much she has grown an dblossomed upon entering Helena Elementary! I was so impressed by how friendly the ENTIRE staff was during registration and the first day of school. I was an emotional wreck and every Teacher we passed hugged me and assured me she would be well taken care of. I couldn't believe how involved the Principle was and her efforts to get to know each parent and child. Her Teacher has not only taught her the required curriculum but has encouraged her, protected her and provided her with life lessons outside of day to day requirements. The function of the school is so smooth to include the carpool line! I am so pleased the school welcomes and encourages parent involvement and goe sabove and beyond in providing us with vital information regarding our students! I also love the extra-curricular activities provided within the school! I cannot say enough about this amazing school. In fact we have grown out of our house but refuse to move until we can find a home that will allow us to stay in the Helena school district.

Helena Elementary School is a model school for all school's across America. On the outside it isn't anything special-our school is older with an addition that makes the children walk up & down a hundred stairs & we have those lovely 'eye-sore' trailers anchored outside. It's the inside that makes our school so incredible; the teachers, the support staff, the students and the parents. We are all a very big, giving family that takes pride in ALL our children. Most of all, everyone at Helena works hard to ensure our children receive the best education as well as the important tools necessary in life to succeed to the best of their ability for the future.

We moved from McAdory specifically to get into Helena Schools. We have been very happy with the school overall. Our son loves to go to school everyday! There is good parent involvement and the teachers and staff seem to truly care about the children. I have interacted with the school nurse, the office staff, the gym teacher, the librarian, some bus drivers, and several 1st grade teachers and have had a pleasant experience with all of them. The first time I spoke with the principle, Mrs. Cooper, she was pleasant, but not overly friendly. I have seen her interact with other parents (i.e. the PTO president) and she was friendlier. I do understand though that she has well over 800 students and cannot be on a chit-chatty basis with all the parents. The assistant principle, Mr. Byers, has been a lot more friendly to me personally. To me, there are an excessive amount of fund raisers we have had 5 this year beyond the school pictures, scholastic books, book fair, Santa shop and a few charitable outreach projects. I do think parent involvement is what makes it a successful school.

We recently relocated from Pelham to get our son into Helena schools and have been 100% satisfied with our decision. He has shown tremendous improvement at this school, his teachers have been very knoweldgeable and experienced, which says a lot in our children's education. We are extremely happy with Ms. Cooper, the principal, who seems to go the extra mile with our children's best interest, rather than another agenda. The city is really growing, and our recommendations from fellow Heleneans to relocate here was perfect and we're very glad we made the change.

We moved to Alabama from another state. The reputation of Helena is why we came to this town! The county was rated high as were the schools! I heard all great things from the school and read some nice reviews. Nothing is the same! I had very high expectations for this school and staff to meet, and unfortunately they have failed miserablely! Even the people in the community surprised me at the parent night, cheering when the principal anounced NO spelling tests! What kind of school system does not encourage that? My child is very discouraged about school because many policies are much different than what he is used to. He has begged me to let him stay home because of teachers attitude towards 'punishment'. I am very unhappy with the decision I made and the situation that I have placed my child in.

After having 2 children attending HES at the same time (they are 2 years apart), I feel somewhat qualified to offer my opinion of the school/teachers. I must say, when we first moved to Helena I was a bit apprehensive about the quality of education my children might receive (we moved from Homewood). I am happy to say now that both of my kids have moved on from HES to HIS, and I have NO complaints! The teachers my kids had at HES were wonderful, caring, and professional. One of my children has some learning disabilities, and the teachers were WONDERFUL at helping her succeed! I feel that there is no other school that could have done any better than HES to prepare my children academically and socially. I must admit, I am a little sad that my youngest has 'graduated' to HIS as I will miss all the HES folks!

Our experience with this school was average at best. Brining our son into first grade from pre-K and K @ a private school, we were disappointed with the lack of challenge by the teachers and lack of understanding by the principal. If your child is average then this is the school for you. Don't expect much if your children are far above or below the mean, as this school seems to have limited resources and/or interest in deviating from their mediocre standards. We have since moved to another school district, and will hopefully see our child once again enthusiastic about learning again in this new environment.

Helena Elementary school is nestled in a small community and is the type of school where everyone knows everyone. If your child doesn't have any special needs it is a perfect fit.I have one child who excels at everything, does well, learns a great deal, and loves the school. On the other hand, I have another child with mild autism and there are minimal services available for him.If your child has any special needs I would not put your child in the shelby county school district. If you look at the school report cards you will see the startling scores for yourself.Hoover seems to have better schools for special needs.

I've had 2 children now in HES and we've never had anything but good experiences. The teachers are fantastic and seem to really challenge the kids. The principal stands her own-which isn't easy when everyone thinks their kid can't do any wrong, but it's easy to see she loves the kids and always does what's in their best interest. The parents are also very involved in the school. Nothing but thumbs up for HES from me.

One of my children has already gone through HES, and I currently have a child in first grade there. I would give the school very high ratings all around. Every teacher we have had has been excellent, and truly care about our children. They have been very open and make sure we are involved in our child's education 100%. I have never had a problem with the administration or the office staff. Whenever I have been at the school, everyone is extremely friendly and eager to make me feel at home. Both my children have gone to HES. We have had good experiences with some teacher and some horrific ones. The office staff is snooty and will make you stand there for 5 min before they notice you are standing there. If you have children with educational needs it seems imposible to get appropriate help. They seem to do the min but not go the extra mile they brag about going, to help a child truly succeed. My childs teacher is outstanding but she doesn't have the administrative support to do what she needs to do to help my child.

My family moved to Helena after hearing about how good the schools were. Our oldest child started K-5 there this year and what a disappointment it has been. My child's homeroom teacher talks to the class like they are in bootcamp. Now my once motivated child is begging to stay home. Don't even try to communicate with the principal. She can't see beyond those 'rose-colored' glasses. It's very unfortunate after all the sales-hype we had heard. Anyone want to buy a house? We're gone!

We have 4 1/2 year experience with HES. My husband and I are pleased with the apparent devotion to the children that the Principal and Assistant Principal display towards the children. We have been impressed with all the teachers that we have been through with our children. Our childen feel happy about going to school and I know that they learn in a safe and loving environment. When I rated the teacher quality at a 4 it is because I was dissapointed by one of our teachers' conduct (in and out of school) and didn't find her suitable to be a leader to future men and women. I rated the extra-curricular activities at a 4 also. The school does an excellent job with the programs that it offers, but I think with the status of the school funding right now, there isn't much more that anyone can offer. Helena's GREAT!

H.E.S. is in Shelby county the most prosperous county in the state. It is an older building that has been added onto many times. The principal Mrs. cooper is very hands on and a stickler for rules. It is k-2 and this year had 13 kindergarten classes, with 19-20 in each class. They have kindergarten acadamy for the parents where they teach you how they teach your child. The level of parent involvement is high. Every child is asked to record minutes read and read to each day and turn in each week. They have compuer lab one day a week as well as computers in each class. Music and art are also offered one day a week and P.E. is daily. All students must wear tennis shoes daily.Healthy lunch and snack choices are stressed. It begins at 8am and goes till 3pm each day and kindergarten classes take a nap.
