What's a great elementary school in Anchorage? What makes it great?

I know this question is old, but for anyone that is looking to move to Alaska in the future, here is some info.
If you are going to be living on Joint Base Elmendorf - Richardson (JBER), your child will be assigned to one of the six elementary schools located on base (2 on Fort Richardson side, 4 on AFB Elmendorf side) depending on which base neighborhood you live in. The middle and high schools are out in town and determined by which side of the base you live on (Fort Rich kids go to Gruening Middle School and Eagle River HS both in Eagle River, via school bussing; I believe the Elmendorf kids go to Clark or Begich Middle and Bartlett HS which are in East Anchorage, all these kids are bussed to their respective schools).
If you are looking to live out in town, Eagle River is just north of JBER and easy for commuting to the base (~20 minutes). All of the schools in Eagle River are fantastic and many military families live out here so the schools are used to helping families moving in/out, adjustments to new schools, deployments and a few have military family life counselors due to high % of military families (25-50%) to make connections with military kids/families (such as lunches and activities specifically for military kids/families) while also doing lots of schoolwide activities to help your military family feel a part of the regular school community.
Schools in Anchorage are good depending on the area you are in and there are also charter schools also available. As with any big city (and Anchorage is the largest in Alaska) you have to do your homework to find an area of town and school that will work for your family - there are good and not as good areas here too. 72559
