All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

There is a reason this school has been ranked the top school in Mesa and the #2 school in the entire state of Arizona! Our kids were advanced when they started here and this school challenged them enough to excel beyond their comfort zone and they love it! A+++ for the teachers and administrators at Self Development Charter School!

Self Development Charter School and Preschool are incredible schools that offer a top notch education. Both schools afforded me a stellar education for the thirteen years I attended. I am currently in my junior year of high school and receiving offers from schools such as Yale and Princeton as well as PAC-12 schools. I can attribute much of my success to the strong foundation I was given by SDCS in math, reading, writing, science and other enrichment courses. With the support of a great principal and caring teachers, I was able to achieve great success in and out of the classroom. At this time, I would like to thank Self Development schools for instilling valuable knowledge and helping me to be a life long learner.

I would like to take the time to say what a wonderful experience my son has had with Ms. Rachel's enrichment. He is always excited to come home and share what she has gone over. She takes the time to make a connection with each of the students so they are engaged and learning. Thank you Ms. Rachel for adding excitement to his learning and making a personal connection with him!

I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Self Development Charter School was in the top 3 middle schools in Arizona. My daughter has been attending since Kindergarten and has been very fortunate to continue her education through middle school. My daughter is taking such courses as Algebra I, High School Literature, and has the opportunity to earn High School Credit next year for Biology and Chemistry. After I think about it I'm not surprised at all that this is one of the top schools in Arizona, with a principal that is so involved with her students and overseeing the progress of her students on a weekly basis. We are very blessed to have found Self Development Charter school for my daughters education. I don't think I can find another school with such caring staff and a principal who knows and cares for each and every student.

I am so happy to have found a school that goes above and beyond to help their students in any way possible. My son has struggled at times and the school has gone out of their way to work with him and us to ensure he is successful. The principal has personally worked with my son and the other staff members to ensure he has a positive experience. The school is not focused on discipline. Self Development is focused on helping their students learn and be successful in all endeavors. Many schools say they are child centered, but I do not believe it would be possible to find a more child centered school than Self Development.

We had my daughter in a well rated public school and they were not challenging her enough. We decided to move her to SDCS and WOW! There is no comparison! She is in love with school and really looks forward to every day. She has been there for over a year now and has excelled in all subjects! I can not say enough about how great the teachers at this school are. Mrs.Steiner is one of the most dedicated, kind, professional teachers I have met. She really challenges her students to work hard, be respectful, and to have fun! For anyone looking for a well rounded school that offers both a high academic standard as well a variety of extra curricular activities this is the one for you!

We feel very, very fortunate to have a school of this caliber so close to home. The caveat as far as success here is that parents MUST be involved at home in the child's academic progress. The curriculum, while aggressive and challenging, is certainly not impossible. With active support at home to encourage the child's education, it is a fantastic combination with what the school has to offer. A previous review states that this school is "about learning, not about drama" -- I could not agree more!! (And, isn't that the way it should be?)

I am a "graduated" student of SDCS, currently enrolled in the IB Programme at Westwood High (I'm in 10th grade). I can honestly say this school helped me understand and admire why learning is so important. I feel this is a great environment for children to learn in, and I have used the tools I learned here throughout my educational career thus far. I am proud to say I have a 4.7 GPA and university with scholarships is an option for me. SDCS really does guide their students in the right direction. If this school is still around when I have children one day, I will most definitely consider sending them here.

I am so excited to hear about the programs Self Development is implementing during the coming year. The junior high math program allows my children to grow to their full potential with no limits to how high they go. The school also has plans in the works to offer AP courses including Biology. As well as allowing the students to participate in various ACT examinations. I am so glad to have found a school that is dedicated to giving my children the opportunity to spread their wings in a nurturing environment.

I am so happy to have found a school that my children enjoy going to and one that I feel has high expectations and goals for their academic success. My children have been going to SDCS for the past 4 years and they have always had a very strong bond with each one of their teachers. They are eager to tell me about their day when I pick them up. They have developed a true love for learning, thanks to SDCS. This love of learning will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Self Development Charter School was the PERFECT school for our children. Both of our children attended SDCS from Kindergarten till 8th grade. The accelerated curriculum challenged our children. This made for a smooth transition into public school. We feel fortunate that our children were given a strong foundation in EVERY subject. There were no gaps in their learning and both were immediately placed in honors classes. The school's preparation given for AIMS and Standford 10 immensely helped our children feel confident and knowlegdeable when taking any exam. Throughout their schooling, testing continues to be part of their education. We are grateful that SDCS prepared our children for these challenges.

This school is not perfect but I feel that it is was best choice for my child out of all the pubic & charter schools in the area for K-3. Of course there are positives & negatives to all schools. Yes, they teach children one grade above for ALL subjects from K-3rd grade. So if your child is 2 grades above level in reading or math, their needs will not be meet. In 4th grade they might go above 2 levels in Math. Another positive is that they offer lots of recess opportunities which is necessary for kids to function. A negative is that there are not a lot of opportunities for hands on learning. They do some science projects for K-3. Maybe on average about once a month,(I am being generous here), but not as often as they should to reinforce the subject. For example, when learning about magnets I strongly believe that they should have played with actual magnets! It is the best way to show how magnets may attract or repel each other. I had to supplement this at home. They do utilize a good curriculum, McGraw Hill, but often use Spectrum workbooks to get the kids ready for their Stanford 10 & AIMS. The staff is nice but I will be transferring my son to Mesa Academy for 4th grade.

I am so grateful to have found a school where my children are receiving a top level education. My students love going to school each day. The school is definitely centered around each individual student and ensuring their needs are met. The teachers in all grade levels enjoy what they are doing and you can see it on their smiling faces. The administration and office staff are always available to answer any questions you may have. I have been at SDCS for 4 years and will remain until my kids enter high school.

Love the school, my daugher has been going since preschool and she is pushed every year to learn to her full potential. If you do not have time to help your child learn then this school wll not work for you. Its about learning and not about drama.Yes there test scores are the best. Look for yourself and compare.

As a parent, I am looking forward to my child entering fourth grade at SDCS! Each year, my child has grown academically and socially. The school truly implements a program that is based on student learning and progress. My child always feels welcomed and nurtured by the school staff and falculty. Although the school receives only state funds, resources are visually allocated to ensure the learning of the students. SDCS is an excellent model of successful education!

Parental involvement is a must! I was compelled to do a review, because there are a few parents that comment that there is no communication between staff and parents! What???!!!! Before we even begin school we get a hand book with rules and regulations, the teacher also gives rules and regulations. Every class has a weekly progress report to be signed by the PARENT! I am always called even if my son falls and scrapes his knee! What more communication do you need!! Wow you must be very busy not to hear any feed back! You have to do YOUR part to stay connected as well!!!

SDCS is number one in our book. Our daughter s ability to overcome obstacles has been evident in her accelerated performance. Her older sister went to a different school and I never once received a phone call from the teacher. At SDCS the teacher calls to give you positive feedback on your child s progress. I am grateful for the teachers, staff and principle at SDCS because of all they do. Their dedication to education is priceless.

We were new to the school this year and we are terribly disappointed. Long story short our son's small group was being taught in the kitchen, a small kitchen that is used for a storage area for all kinds of things. The door had to be open because the air was out on a heat advisory day. I pulled him out that day. But most of all I could never get what I felt was an honest up front answer to any of questions from the staff. In the end, although I think the academics are great I did not feel safe leaving my child there and could not trust the staff's communication with me.

Our daughter was extremely excited about all the new faces at school the first day of school. She has been with SDCS family since the age of one. Changes are inevitable and SDCS is growing because of the incredible school it has always been and continues to be. SDCS was school of the year for a reason and there are several of them. The principal, front office staff and teachers work extremely hard to make sure every child is successful. SDCS was also given an Academic Excellence Award from the Arizona Department of Education. Our family hopes that the school continues to grow and we are confident that our child's education will continue to be top-notch.

I am sorry that parent feels that way about the front office. I wish they would get to know the school better. It is nice as a parent to see the same familiar faces year after year at the front office and in the classrooms. They have an amazing staff that truly cares about the well being of each and every child. My child has been here since kindergarten and is in Mrs. Cote's 5th grade class this year. The excitement I see in her to want to come to school to learn and do better is beyond words. I am truly thankful to SDCS for giving her the foundation for learning!!!

My daughter was so excited to return to school this year, especially with all the new additions to the campus. She has attended SDCS since Kindergarten and has grown so much academically and socially over the past two years! I attribute this to the care of her teachers and the staff of SDCS as well as my involvement as a parent. I greatly appreciate the communication from her teachers and staff, especially the progress notes! I know long before receiving report cards and parent teacher conferences how she is progressing! Thank you.

I have heard so many great things about this school that we decided to enroll our child at SDCS. So far I couldn't be more disappointed! The communication is HORRIBLE from the office to the teacher. I have no idea what is being taught, what the daily schedule is, class rules, etc. I feel totally in the dark. I don't see any nuturing going on as the school claims. I believe that with so many new families it's growing too large too fast & they can't handle it. The only good thing that I see is the playground addition. Other than that, a terrible experience so far!!!

This is a great school to go to if your child can keep up and has enough time for the amount of homework they give you.(i dont have any problem with it but many students do) As a student myself, I believe we spend more time preparing for aims subjects )math, reading, writing, science). The rest of the subjects (social studies, geography) are given less attention to. If your child is into sports, then this is NOT the place to go to. SDCS has been improving their after school activities but being such a small school, we dont have as many great athletes, although the pe teacher is a favorite to ALL students. SDCS is an amazing school but i think it really helps if you start from the the beginning (1st, 2nd grade) and work their way up. Those who come from a public school have an obvious sense of struggling.Overall I think SDCS is a great school for students who have a dedication to learning and not for students with pe for their favorite subject.

I would highly recommend this school if you are not happy with your kids in academic learning, especially in public schools. My daughter loves this school, and she wouldn't leave this school. Thanks a lot to Ms. Richard, Mrs. Benjamin, who are great teachers. And special thanks to Mrs. Lori, who has been working so hard at pulling out kids working on math. I can't find any school like this in AZ.

This school is academically acceptable, and I am very fond of that. However, older grades would be more likely to stay there,if they were treated as a regular midlle school would.Furthermore, they need to teach the kids to be more independent, and not so soft.Other kids WILL be mean to them when they proceed to being older, because some people are just ruthless, other than that I LOVE this school, but more 'casual days' would be nice. Thank you staff and teachers, and of course the principal.

This is a fantastic school. My daughter has been enrolled since KG. The dedication from the staff is second to none. I'm such a proud parent as my daughter is now in the top 1% of the nation in Math. She scored 'exceeded' in all three categories of the aims test. Yes there is homework. Yes there are maybe to many rules :) Yes this school does require a lot of parent time at home. In return however is the near perfect environment for learning! In AIMS results for 2008-2009 this school finished 1st in academics in the whole state. If you are a parent who does not have time to help their children, participate in homework and keep to the schedule. If you child has a hard time working as a team, keeping quiet and listening or is bothersome to others then this is not your school.

My daughter is in kindergardden and has just completed the first grading period. It's amazing how much she has learned in just nine weeks. When my daughter starter school she was only capable of recognizing the letter sounds and now she is reading. My daughter has even learned to add and subtract. I agree that parent involvement with homework is crucial in the success a child who attends this school. Her kindergarten teacher sends a mini progress report home every two weeks that tracks her progress and also sends spelling and math exams home for review. At the end of the grading period the teacher also met with all of the parents. My daughter is more confident now, she loves her teachers and she is participating in a violin class once a week. Can't wait to see how far my daughter's come in a school year.

Exceptional program with a very solid group of instructors. This is not a program for parents who have limited time. The amount of homework and degree of difficulty, demand a fair amount of time from the parents. This additional time is where the children advance the most among their peers at other programs. The primary focus on academics does require the parents to seek out other after school activities to round out the children. Overall we have been pleased with our daughters results and her general attitude towards school.

Our children have attended Self Development Charter School for several years, and we are completely thrilled with their education. The teachers and staff help to ensure our children are receiving a wonderful education. Not only do they offer an accelerated curriculum, but also an incredible enrichment program. Our children are excited to be participating with in the violin program implemented for all students in their class. Our children are also continually challenged which helps them not to become 'bored.' The curriculum offers a perfect balance for our children. When all classroom work is complete, they are given enrichment activities to compliment the already excellent curriculum.

We really do love this school. Both my daughters go there and have for 3 years. I had a very difficult child who was removed from 2 different schools due to behavioral problems and they have taken the extra time to work with and dicipline her. My other child came from a public school in Mesa and could not even read coming from Kindergarden and they turned it around in 3 months. I highly recommend giving them a try, yes they are focused on education but fun is never overlooked.

My children have attended Self Development for the past four years and I find the teachers to be very patient and helpful. The class sizes are small and if a child needs additional help they are pulled out in a small group or by themselves and receive the help. When my son was at a regular Mesa elementary if a child didn't understand the attitute was Oh well we will hold them back and they will get it next year. I also had to hound them about getting extra help and tutoring even though they offered it weekly...it was like a secret. At Self Development I never have to ask they see that the child needs help and they provide it. The teachers remain in contact with the parents and provide weekly report cards, nothing is a surprise at the end of the quarter.

My son attended for a number of years and did well. My son was advanced when we started at Self Development and remains so in the public school system. The environment at Self Development is extremely restrictive, with the focus on being quiet, which doesn't work well with the younger kids. Recess is their only outlet, and was often times restricted - balls were not allowed. When we transferred, my son was amazed at how much fun school could be. He continues to excel and is a role model and leader in the public school system. My only regret is not pulling him from Self Development School earlier.

My daughter has been going to this school for 2 years now and we have been having problems the whole time. They don't seem to care when a student is having difficulties. They just give them a bad grade and keep moving on. Teachers should be there to help thier students but that hasn't been the case with my daughter. The principal is no help at all but I do love the assistant principal. I am currently looking at removing my daughter from this school. Don't let the high test scores at this school fool you unless your child is great at everything and doesn't require any help from thier teacher.

I have several children who attend the charter school. I think there is a huge focus on academics. I am not confident that the learning environment is fun. I don't think the children enjoy going. There seem to be some excellent teachers, and some not so great ones. But bottom line my children learn and learn much more then the average public school student. I do not recommend this school for children who are behind, or not excelling for their level.

This school has an excellent academic program. The atmosphere at the school is very child centered, and the staff are warm and welcoming. The school has many extracurricular activities such as a sports clinic, orchestra program, poetry club, and geography club. My children have been attending for 4 years and their individual needs are being met. I have a special needs child and couldn't be happier with the progress we have made. The schools should be concerned about test scores when our students are being measured in that way all over Arizona. These test scores determine whether our students and teachers are mastering the Arizona standards, which ultimately decides which type of diploma they receive in high school. If the state is worried about our test scores, then the schools should be concerned also.

Had a child here from 2nd to 6th grade. School very focused on the test scores and how to keep them to keep them high. Although there are claims that the school is a grade level above public schools it has yet to be seen on any subjects other than math.

Self Development Charter is a great school! Their academic program is amazing! My son has excelled tremendously. I like the style of learning Self Development has to offer. They have made learning fun for my son. I am glad they push the children to a higher standard and prepare them for the future. If your child is willing to work hard, then I highly recommend this school.

School is 'Excelling', however, push the students too much. Students are given an inappropriate amount of homework for their age group. Staff are more concerned about 'grades' and 'test scores' than about the children actually learning and developing the love of learning. Not an environment for any student that has any special needs whether academically, physically, or mentally. I would not recommend this school.

This school is purely academic school and probably one of the best in Arizona.

Academics are the main focus here. The children are challenged, but they keep learning fun. I'm impressed. I know friends that say the after school program could be improved; they get enough play time but could have a few more activities for the kids. They do give them time to do homework though.

I have one child in kindergarten and one in 2nd grade and the experience has been good so far. I do get concerened about the limited extracurricular activities.

Academically, I couldn't be happier with the school and the teachers. I do feel they are too stringent regarding lunch time and free time in regards to noise level, etc. The kids are pushed hard in a very controlled environment, but these are childen, and thus have lots of energy and they need to be allowed to be KIDS. I would also like to see more information on after school sports programs and the principal to be less concerned with her rating in the state.

I couldn't ask for a better education for our daughter. She has attended SDCS for two years. I wouldn't recommend this school to anyone and everyone though. If families are committed to a high level of focus and desire a high level of education for their child--this is the place. Homework and reading is required nightly (they give you weekly homework packets). The school is almost a 'back to basics' school, however, they have a strong emphasis on math and give the students more science than one would expect in elementary school (we like). They have PE twice a week, have Spanish I believe once a week, and music once a week. For clubs, they offer spelling, math, chess club, walking/running club and have strings. We've been happy with our school discovery, but the classes are getting full. I expect to see waiting list soon.

I have 2 children enrolled at Self Development Charter School. The thrive in the accelerated environment and continually achieve high results on state testing. I wouldn't think of having them attend another school. The teachers and principal are very involved with the students and it shows!

My child is starting her second year at SDCS with amazing results. We did not work with her prior to starting kindergarden, as we should have. However, she caught up very quickly thanks to the special attention each child receives. They kept us as parents very involved too. By year end, our child was able to test in the 99th percentile and we give all the credit to the teaching provided during the year. She will definitely be there through 5th grade.

I love this school. They are finally beginning the much anticipated building to add on more classrooms and a multi-purpose room. Your child will be challenged in this school- they can handle more than we give them credit for. My only complaint is that the classes have gotten larger; but with more rooms, hopefully this will fix the problem. One teacher should not have as many kids to teach as my daughters did this year. They also need to work on the quality of the after-school care. They need more activities for the older kids. They find it boring.

My child has been a student at Self Development Charter School for three years. I find this school to be a wonderful environment for her to learn in. This school is an accelerated program. The students are working a full grade level above and the classes move at a fast pace. My child has flourished in this environment. The teachers and Principal work together to create a curriculum that challenges the students to better prepare them for the future. It is a huge importance that parents also be involved in their child's academic progress. Without this support, students will fall behind in this environment and any other, public or private. The teachers and principal are dedicated to the children at this school. I would recommend this Charter School to anyone.

I love this School. Although at times it is an inconvenience to work around my work schedule I've not only kept my 9 yr old there since Kindergarten but, my 5 yr old starts school at SDCS in August 2005. I'm extremely excited. I couldn't ask for a better school Thank you

This is academically a very good school, and would be very appropriate for students that may be bored in a public school. This school however, is not appropriate for average ability, or low ability kids. Students are pushed to keep up and move forward with the rest of the class. If they are behind or struggling, they are typically left on their own to solve the problem. I also have huge concerns with the principal and her leadership as well as some of the teachers.

Academic programs at Self-Development Preschool are excellent. Children of all ages surprise you daily with what they've learn at the preschool and are always academically ahead of the norm. This preschool is fastidious about cleanliness, lead teachers are well educated in early chilhood development, and teacher retention if high for a preschool. Small children thrive at this preschool because teachers have control, the noise level is low, and teachers manage to teach the small children about respect, following directions, etc. The school-age after-school care program needs much improvement however. School-age children 10-12 are always bored, complain about rigidity of care-takers, limited physical activity, and lack free time.

Great focus on academics. Curriculum is one year ahead of actual grade level. Small school and class size. Poor communication from principal.

We like the small classrooms and the attention our child receives from the staff at SDCS. The class work is challenging and the children enjoys excelling in their class work.
