ADVANCED

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My family has been very impressed with Desert Trails. All Teachers & staff have been absolutely wonderful. Very family oriented atmosphere.

Desert Trails is a great family school. The principal and the teachers are very accessible. I feel like my son is getting more one and one attention from his teachers as well as the special area teachers. We are glad we are there!

Our children have had a wonderful experience at Desert Trails Elementary. They have enjoyed their teachers and the many firends they have made. We would highly reccommend this school to anyone.

I find it amusing that the previous reviewer wants people to form their own opinion and not take into account the negative reviews at all. The new principal asked at a PTO meeting to have parents come out on this site and give good reviews to help boost the scores. She is completely enrollment driven and wants her numbers to look good. The bullying by children and her "chosen" parents is a real issue. They have driven the working parents out from being a part of anything and it is truly sad. If it weren't for the amazing teachers k-4 we would have left. When it is time for 5th grade if better teachers haven't been brought in, it may be time to look elsewhere if you want your child to have a great education.

Desert Trails Elementary is a school I am proud to have my children attend. The new principal, Sheri Duggan is a person who knows how to get things done for the school & the students. The school is rated "A" & the test scores are very impressive: 3rd & 4th grade scored highest in the District in 2013! The teachers are phenomenal, they give it their all. There is a new vibe at the school- new principal, several new teachers- it's an exciting place!

The one problem at this school, PARENTS. The talk in the neighborhood is filthy. These parents don't mind tearing down other parents, teachers or the principal. Would not recommend this school only because the parents are horrible, horrible, horrible.

I agree with Feb 12, 2013 post. School is not crowded and any bullying is taken very seriously. Principal is a caring, kind person as are the teachers. This school is not in Surprise or Scottsdale. The post on Feb. 11, 2013 must be referring to a different school.

HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE School.... Teachers & Principal lack in proper education and GOOD discipline. Expect allot of bullies, crowding, and poor leadership.. The only plus to this school is Kinder and 1st grade. I live in Surprise and drive my kids to Scottsdale everyday just for high quality teachers and good schools..

I am surprised that the School Board has allowed this administration to stay. Many families are using school choice to leave this school. The teachers are very good especially in lower grades.

Lower grade teachers are great, higher grades leave a bit to be desired. Definitely not preparing the kids for middle school.

My child has attended Desert Trails for the past five years. For the most part we have been very pleased with the teachers and with our experience at Desert Trails. However, the principal is the biggest problem at the school. She is not a leader and has a difficult time addressing any problems or concerns. I have seen the school gradually deteriorate under her leadership.

I have two children enrolled at DTES. The teachers, as a whole, are phenominal. Unfortunately, the principal leaves much to be desired for and the school is beginning to show signs of deterioration due to this. She has poor communication and is slow to implement things which should be occurring. The school class sizes are growing due to budget cuts. I am looking for other schools to place my children in.

I have sent both children to Desert Trails, and find everything just wonderful. The teachers, parents involved, other children, the school has just the right amount of space for all the children. We love the school and plan to stay here until the 6th grade year is over.

Our experience at DTES has been outstanding! Teacher communication (and Principal) are always open...anytime. The community spirit surrounding the school can not be out done. I am grateful I have 5 more years being apart of DTES!!

The teachers at Desert Trails are excellent. The principal, however, is far below average. I do not feel that my children are the main priority especially when it comes to their safety. It is a shame to see such an excellent school heading downhill fast because of one person!

Our son has attended DT from 1st to 6th grade. All of his teachers have gone above and beyond to meet the needs of the varied students in the classrooms. The many parent volunteers at this school have also added to the excellent experience we have had. We will miss DT as we head to Middle School.

I don't think desert trails is a very good school for children who plan to have a productive future. My kids have been at desert trails for 2 years and i am considering transferring. This school needs a new principal, new teachers and major help!

Our daughters have attended DTES for 4-6 grade, and K-3. While the school is large/crowded, we are very pleased with the teachers and how our daughters have progressed. Some view the large school as a problem. If parents hold their children accoundable for their actions and require them to be a positive contributor, not a negative one, the school being large (or overcrowded as some say) should not be a problem. Parents always have the option of moving their child to another school-public or private. If you are not happy at DTES, I suggest you move your child elsewhere. Negativity in any school is counterproductive and should be avoided as often as possible.

My son has attended Desert Trails since kindergarten. I have been dissapointed from the first day. The school is far too crowded. The teachers are overwhelmed and the students receive no individualized attention. This is fine some however, my son would benefit greatly from a more personalized setting. There is a cold, drab, dull, characterless feel to it.

This school is overcrowded. Class sizes are too large for one teacher to be effective. The district also uses the 'Make Your Day' program which focuses on how many points each child earned for behavior. This program overshadows the academics and teaches children that the points they earn are all that matters.

Our experience has been wonderful at Desert Trails. We have experienced K-3 so far and the teachers at each grade level have been dedicated, demonstrated differentiated learning applications, and have genuinely been concerned about the progress of my childrens' education. If my children require additional challenging material, the teachers have supported my requests. I have found the teachers to be experienced, the new principal to be engaged and makes decisions with relevant information, and the support staff is friendly. Next school year the school will have fewer students due to a new neighborhood school soon to be opening. I believe Desert Trails will be an Excelling School again next year given the efforts of all participants - teachers, staff, and students. I am glad that my children attend Desert Trails!

Desert Trails is a very nice neighborhood school, but it is quite large. There were 5-6 Kindergarten classed, 6 first grade classes, etc. We found that because of the large class size your child will not receive individual learning skills, but follow the class as a whole. There are plenty of extra activities offered, gymnastics, art, reading. You will find that parents try to get involved, but since this is a publicly funded school, the involvement is less than a private one. Our daughter is in kindergarten, but reads at a 2nd grade level, she is learning the alphabet in her class room.

The teachers at DT were always very helpful and supportive. A few years back there were some concerns with the administration, but that has gotten progressively better over the years. The extracurricular activities are offered, but I believe should be more advertised to students. Overall I think Desert Trails Elementary is a fine school.

Class size continues to grow and is now close to 30 students per teacher. Also one of the two honors teachers has been moved into a 5th grade class room. Although the quality of my children's educational experience has been good so far I fear that will be changing. Also we are now on our third principal in three years and the quality of each has not been up to the level of their predecessor.

teachers are very good but are teaching way below standard. My kids transferred from another elementary school and found that this one was about 18 months behind and that even their honors classes were behind their previous school by just as much.

I believe the quality of academic porgrams is outstanding. All of the teacher I have experienced are terrific and caring individuals with the students best interst at heart. They have a great strings and band program along with alot of extracurricular activities throughout the year. I believe this school to be one of the best in Arizona with many parents getting involved with all aspects of their childrens education. I LOVE this school!

The teachers are very enthusiastic at this school. The school is crowded and has large class sizes though, which caused my daughter to get lost. I would like to see something done by the district about this as we wait for a new school to be built in the area.

Both my children have gone to Desert Trails-they both have excelled-my daughter reads 3-4 grade levels higher than her actual grade year. The teachers we've had are very caring, and approachable.I know there have been some issues with the previous principal but overall the school is great.

We have a breath of fresh air coming into Desert Trails. We can't wait to see the new principal at work to help us all work together again. We have awesome teachers here and would like to keep them here with our kids. Our PTA will be better than ever this year.
