I'm a past student of Sedona Charter School, and all I can say is that it was average. The history and art departments at the school are excellent, but the honors math, english, and science were well below average. On entering a private high school I found myself lost in the academics. Its quite difficult to keep up an english grade when you haven't learned any english before. I felt so unprepared, even a little embarrassed about the small amount if information I had received. I hope the school can grow academically as much as it has grown creatively. Until then, this school was a waste of two very valuable years.
The teachers are wonderful and they go above and beyond! It is more like a family than a classroom. My son has progressed dramatically since attending and he actually couldn't wait to start school during summer break. Who ever hears of that?
This unique school works so hard to provide a challenging education to its students. Involved in national and world-wide learning projects, the students are tuned in to the world, which, as a university professor myself, I find dismally lacking in young adults. They are being taught from the earliest grades to reach for their potential, and they see modeled in their teacher/mentors the confidence they need to succeed!!
They do beautiful work there!
Good school as long as your child is not special needs in any way. My child was well behaved but has dyslexia, and was picked on by students and staff alike when she was in first and second grade. Most times she was ignored and didn't learn much. I ended up having to move her due to the negative environment. My son though, did ok here.
students have wonderful opportunities to learn, grow, form their own opinions of world, very broadminded and grounded.
I am a 'past' parent - my son is now in college, but the caring, individual attention and incredible creativity of al the staff made a huge difference in my sons academic life! Five stars!!! :)
My 6 year old attends Sedona Charter School, and I couldn't be happier. This school has taught him, how to cook, play the violin, crochet, and above all REAL life skills. The curriculum is set up to teach the children at the pace and challenges that they need at that time. My son has advanced so much, that he is reading at a 3rd grade level. The teachers are strict but fun, and they teach the children about taking ownership over their actions. I like that the children are accountable for what they say and do. The lower elementary classroom consists of 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders. The great thing is that the 3rd graders mentor the younger children, so they are learning while they teach. Bob, Terry and Shaundra are dedicated teachers who work countless hours for our children's education. I would highly recommend this school!
Our 10.5 year old son has been enrolled since Kindergarten as is our nephew of the same age. We continue to be VERY pleased with all aspects of Sedona Charter School and plan for him to attend through the 8th grade.
My 12 year old son attended 6th grade last year and is in 7th this year. The most impressive part of their program is the teaching of self-responsibility regarding conduct and assignments. The approach is not disciplinarian, but is based on the sense of self-worth resulting from being responsible. There is nothing like watching my son and his classmates be self-motivated to finish assignments, even when they come over after school to play. Academically, my son receives as much challenge as he is ready to take on. Teachers raise the level of expectations in accordance with each student's growing mastery of a subject. Parent and community involvement is considerable: each parent is expected to volunteer 50 hours each year. I was significantly involved in class activities last year, but this year of adolescence requires more hands-off from parents. There is not much of structured sports, music, or art, but plenty of extracurricular activities.
