INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Frank Otis is a real great school. Love it so much. Principal, Teachers, Parents, Kids, and Playground are the best from any other school in Alameda areas. I would say its over 5 stars rating.

Otis is a warm community school with a REALLY high level of parent involvement. The community at the school is a bit quirky and you can definitely feel the unique culture at Otis. The PTA funds field trips, classroom supplies and buys technology for student use. Dr. Clem does an amazing amount with the few resources the district gives her and motivates the school community to make up the difference. My children have had teachers who work hard to provide an education for them. I can't say that all of the teachers are innovative but they are still effective at their craft and care a lot about the students. It is overcrowded but the staff does a good job in managing that.

This school has attentive teachers and a great deal of energy paid to the kids well-being and happiness. It's a large school, but doesn't feel like it.

Outstanding local school. Alameda has great schools in general. Fantastic involvement from parents and Dr. Clem is the most hands on principal I have ever encountered.

We are half way through our tenure at Otis and would definitively say that the school has exceeded all of our expectations. Our son has been fortunate in that each of his K-2 teachers have been an excellent "fit" for him. And after the first week, we are equally pleased with his 3rd grade teacher. We love the diversity, a strong and passionate school principal, the stunning amount of parent involvement and volunteerism, the many school traditions and events (ranging from Art a la Mode to Walkathon to Gingerbread House to Fall Carnival), and excellent school-parent communications (weekly e-newsletter and principal-parent-student assembly). Our neighborhood school has given us the opportunity to meet and befriend so many of our neighbors -- a true community resource.

Otis has an amazing principal and a wonderful parent community, and many wonderful caring teachers. A few are tired and need to retire, and sometimes the approach to education is very traditional, and not terribly inspiring to kids, but that's probably true almost everywhere today in our test-driven system. We feel very lucky to be part of the diversity and great education at Otis. My son is in first grade and has learned an amazing amount here, and overall we are very happy.

Otis is a diverse school that benefits from a unique blend of excellent teachers working together with committed parents. When these children leave Otis for middle school, they leave as strong, capable students ready to take on the next challenge.

Otis is just okay!!! The teacher my daughter has this year is so terrible. Most of the parents feel the same way, and we have complained to the principal and he does nothing about it. He always side with her. I have talk to other parents that had her before, and they said to run she is a nightmare.

We have been at Otis school for 3 years and we love it. We have a great PTA and lots of parent envolement or support. We have a school garden, music and art programs as well as other fun activites through the year. The school is very diverse and embraces the culture diversity at the school. The principle has been well liked and invested in the school. However, for the next school year (2006) a new principle is joining Otis. He comes highly recommended and is from an existing Alameda school.

We are incredibly pleased with this school. Otis often gets overshadowed by 'showier' Edison, but we have been delighted with our daughter's experience there. Her teacher for both first and second grade has shown tremendous interest in the children's social and academic growth. We have also been very pleased with the sense of community of the parents - moms and dads both. I would definitely recommend Otis.

Otis school has been a great experience for me and my wife as well as my kids. Parent involvement has been a key for the success of our school and teachers getting to know the students and their needs has help them thrive in class.

Last year my 6 year old son attended 1st grade at Otis School. His teacher was extremely involved in the progress of her students and my son made leaps and bounds in reading, writing and all of the other curriculum offered. He looked forward to going to school, participating with his classmates (now good friends) and being involved with his scholastic surroundings. The administration is also noticibly involved in extracurricular activities with fairs, movie nights and many fun and educational activities. If you live on the east end of Alameda you will find a very nice home for your child at Otis.

Otis is a cozy neighborhood school located right next to Krusi Park, with its ample playing fields and fabulous play structure. The school provides PE and music; art docents (parent volunteers) provide art lessons once or twice a month. There is a wide range of afterschool 'enrichment' classes (e.g., woodworking, art, chess, robot building, cooking, and Spanish). Parent involvement is fair, but not great (but seems to be getting better.)

Otis is a warm welcoming school. My daughter has had great teachers and has achedemically excelled. The PTA is really blossoming into a real partner for the school. I can't say how stongly I love the pricipal Katie Lyons. She has amazing insight into each and every child it is amazing. My great expirience at Otis is due in part I belive to my participation there. I know what goes on here and I a m please with it. As with all Alameda pubic schools, I do wish more attention would be put on play yard supervision.

My child started at Otis late September 2003. The first couple of weeks were a bit stressful for him being the new student where friendships are already established. He overcame many obstacles with the guidance of his 4th grade teacher. Over the course of the school year, he gained many friendships. Academically, he became stronger. The homework was balanced well, he was able to continue sports, and didn t get overwhelmed with the two. Otis offers a lot for the community and children. I m very pleased with the school. The parent involvement is great. I d also like to say Thank You to the crossing guards for making sure our children are safe during the school year.

Our child is currently in Kindergarten at Otis School, and the whole family is enjoying the experience. Her teacher is fantastic, the homework is creative, varied, and enjoyable, and the principal is very caring and visible. Our child is really blossoming personally, socially, and academically in this setting. The only thing that bothers me so far is the low parent turnout for PTA meetings. There are only about a dozen parents, most of them the parents of Kindergarten students.

This is our first year at Otis, and so far we are very pleased. We like Mrs. Goldspring because she brings a lot of joy to teaching, and she is able to keep control without sounding angry. Our child is learning to read at a pace we are satisfied with, and the teachers let us know clearly and precisely what our child has learned as well as what our child still must work on. The homework level is fine - enough to challenge but not so much that it takes away our evening play time (both of us work full time). Finally, we'd like to emphasize that our child is learning just as much as the kids we know at Edison. Yes, Edison has more parents with more education and bigger paychecks, but we have not seen evidence that teaching is better there.

It has been a pleasure to have been at Otis these past 5 years. I may have had my own opinion for each teacher my child has had, however, it always seem so work out. One teacher in particular (Mr. Jaeger -thank you!) really made a huge impact my child's life. More teachers like him and I'm sure Otis would be the top school of choice in Alameda! Every year my child advanced academically and I am very impressed with the depth of knowledge my child will carry into middle school. Thank you Otis for a wonderful 5 years!

This is our first year at Otis and I have to say that we are extremely happy about the quality of the teachers and education. It is all about what you put into it to get the best possible exprerience and outcome.

I do not know how to present this comment any other way but to tell you the past 5 years at Otis have been simply trying. I am very disappointed with the school, and the homework load this year 2003. Yes the school must meet the California needs to get the funds and grants with the high scores. The answer: free tutoring at Alameda Library - how do you get your child there? No offers to that question. Nice thought tho'. I know that at least 70% of the moms work today. It is a challenge at by itself to raise a child, meet the homework needs, dinners and a bath during the week, and wake to be ready for our work expectancy. I truly wish I did not have to work, at least not full time. I am not alone with these comments, just some are afraid to speak out at their child might pay the price in class. I am not asking for much, just fairness, and paitence and love with our small children. The children want to please, especially at this age. Don't you think it is time for parents to have a place to meet and discuss our issues and be heard? PTA is not just about what functions to have to raise money for the school. It is time to get involved for our children and their futures. I guess I am telling you as you read this, we as parents have to converse and speak and be heard. I am frustrated with the whole system.
