INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

The truth. It's a good school. The teachers I have met are really nice and work hard to help the students. The principal, however, is in it for herself. She does what makes her look good. Some of the front office are really nice and helpful while others look at you like "what the heck do you want?" If you have a child that behaves well in class or is wicked smart, then you get in the advanced classes. Otherwise, your child gets lumped together with the troubled ones and will either sink or swim depending on the teacher/parent involvement. I personally feel that the schools rating would improve with a better principal.

This school is great! The teachers are great! The families are great! It's earned top-honors for it's gifted programs & has on-site YMCA, a parent-funded PE program, a great PTA, and extended after-school curriculum & other activities. BUT, the principal has been driving-away some of the most active families. She's rude. Speaks to parents like they're children. Closes her door when people come in the office. She's unwelcoming, and even imposed rules limiting parent's access to the campus. The school was much better, and has been going down in every measurable way under her rule. Fortunately, the school is now a Charter. When she leaves, I suspect that the teachers & parents will find someone who plays better with others.

The previous reviews are wrong. Rumors are going around that it is one disgruntled parent using multiple emails, that hasn't even been at the school very long and has a history of school hopping when people finally wise up to her unpleasantness. It is a shame that websites like this exist that allow anonymous people to slander hard working, dedicated staff and students such as those at Germain. It is a terrific school!

This school is below unsatisfactory. I am disappointed with the class room sizes, the terrible unhealthy processed lunch service, and the 5th grade teacher's technique on NOT reprimanding students when they are displaying disruptive behavior. My child is easily distracted by children her own age, and it is not acceptable to secretly note child's behavior instead of controlling your students and stopping them in the moment of their distracting behavior. These are 5th graders in ELEMENTARY school, not middle school or high school. Do not pretend they understand how to behave, it is your job as a teacher of these students to TEACH them the required lessons as well as the behavior of a student. These students need to be taught healthy study habits, don't just send your "list" of behavior issues home each week if you don't have the TEACHING skills to bring them up directly with the student when it happens. Besides the lack of a "Teacher" in the huge class, the students themselves seem to be a reflection of over worked, rarely home, stressed out parents. The way little kids gossip, whisper, "date" and talk down to each other is disgusting. Parents of these students should reflect....

Terrible school. Teacher's are friendly YES, however the teaching style and class room size does not help the students succeed. I am pulling my child out, after only 8 weeks. My child deserves an education to build a foundation for success not failure. It is not my child's fault that the class has more than 40 other students, she deserve to have her questions answered. Her teacher should understand each students individual learning style, not pretend every child knows what the lesson is about just because your reading from the same book. I enrolled my child in this school based on the below reviews, but these "parents" "grandparents" and "teachers" are in LALA LAND! You have no idea what a "good" school means. Take the time to educate yourself on what a child needs in school, before you pretend everything is peachy at Germain Academy of JOKES

This school is horrible, mostly because the leadership team doesn't give 2 cents about the children. The good families are leaving in droves as well as the good teachers. Principal Mrs. Ugarte (well know by the students as Mrs. Notsmarte) is unhelpful, unfriendly and selfish. She uses foul language in her office and neglects to close the door so parents and students have all heard her potty mouth. She hides from parents as to avoid hearing their concerns and NEVER returns a call. If you have an issue prepare to take a week to physically track her down. The school is unsafe as the office is left unattended for small periods at a time, very brief periods but none the less. The office manager, Mrs. Alvarez is by far the rudest person on the planet. Rude to parents and absolutely rude to the kids. After 4 years at the school with no PE, thankfully PTA raised money and so now they get PE once a week. No science, yet there are tons of science boxes filled with great learning materials that are untouched, in fact dusty. No art to be spoken of. My son had computer lab in kinder and not again...ever. He is entering 5th grade and we are finally out of there!!

I transferred my child to Germain Street Elementary School from a private school in third grade. He is now graduating and I have nothing but good things to say about the school. The teachers are excellent! The staff is very helpful. The principle knows a lot of the kids by name and can be seen around the school regularly. Another thing I love about Germain is the ethnic and cultural mix of the students. With all this, it s understandable why they have received a California Distinguished School Award.

Germain is a California Distinguished School, which is a high honor based on the the school's high API, approval of the school's application and two signature practices--"Targeted Intervention Program," and "Depth and Complexity is for every student," and a visitation to validate the school's best practices.

I don't know what prompted the previous writer's remarks, but I have always found the staff at the school to be professional, courteous and helpful, even when dealing with circumstances that may not be under their control. The staff has been cut due to the budget crisis, but those that remain are working hard to give the students a great education and make them feel safe and comfortable at school.

My child has been at Germain for the last 4 years. There are a number of teachers that are completely dedicated to the children, and have taken the time to become positive role models and teach the children not only required subjects but what it takes to become a productive member of society. Let me also mention that there happen to be a few bad apples in the staff. I have encountered multiple staff members who are rude and should not be working in an elementary school.

No matter what the situation of the Nation and the effect it is having on the teachers and school budget for supplies; this school stays true to form in the quality of education and care for the students. I still see teachers staying past their time preparing for the next day so the children will have the best they have to offer. The Principal is on top of all concerns and trys her best to give attention to who require it, that goes for teachers, students, assistants and most definately parents. This is no easy task, and she always does it with a somle on her face and to what I beleive is the best of her ability. This is also one of the cleanest schools I have ever seen for a public school. The assistants are aware of all their surroundings and of the children even when just out of sight. Here out of sight is not out of mind, I've seen aids check on a child too long in the bathroom, often sending another child in to see if they are alright. With all the cut-backs you would think them to be depressed, but no, I see smiles for the children and for their peers. And it's so clean outside and in.

I am a parent of two children at Germain. I couldn't be happier with the staff and the parent involvement. My children also attend the after school program at the YMCA, they have a new director and a great new program, the girls are so nice! I would recommend Germain to anyone.

Our school continues to improve on our state tests and have been above 800 for the past 3 years. The teachers really do their best with what they have been delt with all the budget cuts and lay offs. The PTA makes a lot of things possible for the students that would not be available to them if it wasn't for them. Our school is free of vandalism and our students are good at following the rules. Our school is definitely a safe school zone.

I have seen a noticable improvement in the school under the new leadership. My child also attends the afterschool program at the YMCA on campus and the staff at the Y are very professional and caring toward my child. I look forward to many summers and school years at Germain and the YMCA!

This ismy first year at Germain. I have a 4th grader in GATE and a son in Kinder. I love the school. Love the GATE program. And I cannot say how pleased I am that the principal has left. I thought she was rude and embarrassing to the school.

My son has attended this school since 2nd grade, and he is now in fifth grade. I wish I can say that there are caring teachers and staff members in the school. This really disappoints me because the other three years that my child has spent at this school have been very successful, and now I feel that this school is not fulfilling its obligation as a school.

My daughter has attended this school since kindergarten, and is now graduating 5th grade. This is an excellent school, with intelligent caring teachers and staff, and a high level of parent involvement. I have been happy with all aspects of the school, from the grounds, to the academics, to the social activities for the students. There are plenty of extracurricular activities, a YMCA after school program, homework help, a new World of Reading Library, Chorus, and above all the kind of encouragement for students to do the very best they can from a group of dedicated teachers and staff.

My second grader has been there since kindergarten. We are totally pleased with her teachers and her learning experience. Also, the area is very safe and parents and teachers really look out for the kids. The kids in her classroom have to tell the teacher by signing a board whether they are staying for an after school program or are being picked up. That way, there is accountability. The teachers/staff are very friendly and have always been readily available to discuss our child or any other issue. The parental involvement in the classrooms and PTA is strong, overall. There are plenty of after school programs available, and many invitations from the principal for parental 'coffees' to discuss issues. You can tell that the administration really cares. Everyone seems to look out for one another we feel lucky to have daughter at Germain Street School. We'll stay there for the duration.

I have two children 8 and 6 who have attended this school since kindergarten. All of my kids' teachers were wonderful. I do not have one complaint when it comes to the quality of teachers at Germain. There is strong parent involvement with donating time to the school as well as the PTA.

This is a great school as compared to other public schools in the area. It is strong academically. What bothered me the most, was it seemed like there was no real strong organization in the main office. They also did not have much extracurricular activities. Sports class was only one time per week, and that was not even available the first and last month of the year. Computer class was not available till the middle of the year. And, the library did not open until the middle of the year either.

Germain is a very close knit, family involved school. The teacher's are excellent and truly care about your child. The computer lab has some wonderful people working with the kids. The new library is also very nice. The turnover rate for principal position has caused some concern for many of the parents. There does not seem to be enough involvement from 'upper managment'.

I would agree that there is a strong lack of parental support from the principal. I had two instances where my daughter's teacher did something I did not approve of, the principal sided with the teacher in both instances. My daughter has gone to germain for 2 years now, I am considering not letting her go back next year, directly because of the principal.

During her two years as principal, Germain Street School has adopted a school wide discipline and anti-bullying program. The principal is proactive in making sure that school is a safe place for children both emotionally and physically. Under her leadership the school has applied for Distinguished School status, received a matching funds grant for the Wonder of Reading library, supervised a painting and technology project. She is supportive of the PTA and encourages parent involvement. She attends afterschool and evening meetings and events willingly. Her warm smile and caring personality has endeared her to the students, teachers and parents. She is a hard worker who does what is in the best interest of students.

There is absolutely no support from the principal in regards to rude behavior from teachers. The teachers do how they see fit without parent feedback and total disregard for common respect. There seriously needs to be a change in leadership from this facility starting with accountablity procedures.

I worked for Germain for nearly three years as a teacher's assistant and I can vouch, first-hand that it is the most wonderful and productive learning environment in this neighborhood. The teachers, the staff, and the principle all work together on a common goal: the best interest of our children!
