Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

This is my son's second year at Heritage. We are very happy with the teachers, the curriculum and the administration. I do wish there was enhanced learning for advanced children. The standard class has 1 teacher and an aide for a maximum of 24 students. My only complaints would be the location, lack of a library and a limited lunch program. There is no playground or grass area which is unfortunate. They are looking into moving or adding a grass area. On the whole, the school is excellent. My son is very happy there!

Our youngest child needed speech therapy and her teachers and the administration had it all lined up in a heartbeat. The amount of encouragement shown to our daughter was incredible! Her confidence has grown by leaps and bounds and she even had a speaking role in the class play. Heritage has been a tremendous blessing! My only challenge as a parent is the lack of parking. If that is the only negative aspect of our children's school, I know we have made the right choice.

I love this school I have 2 boys enrolled here. My oldest came here last year in third grade and he was way behind in all subjects. We want to thank the school because his grades have dramatically improved. Both my boys go to school with a smile on their faces everyday.Thank God for all the teachers and staff, they are truely a blessing.

This school is the number one k-8 charter school in California. Enough said! All the kids and parents I see day in and day out are extremely happy with the school.

This school is terrible ..the teachers cussed at my kids and the principal does nothing about... My kids do not like this school. They are very unorganized.

My daughter started HK-8 two years ago in middle school. She was very shy at the time, but a great student. Although the academics are more challenging, she loves this school. All the kids are like a family and step up for eachother when one is going through something. They have embraced several new students and my daughter is very comfortable and happy(and I wonder where my shy child went.) I also recently saw how the students all rallied around another student who has some learning struggles and went out of their way to support him in a ceremony he was part of. The parents here care about their kids, staff are vested and willing to take lower pay because they want to work in this environment, and are excellent. The administration is honest and does what it says it is going to do. They also hold the kids accountable and you won't see teens "making out" on the campus. I am thankful for a safe, loving, and challenging environment for my child to grow and learn!

My son has Selective Mutism and had difficulty speaking in public, including to his teachers. Before he was diagnosed, the teachers did a WONDERFUL job at trying to make it easier for him to cope and going out of their way help him. The staff, incl. the admin, worked with his therapist on how to deal with his situation and now, he has even participated in a spelling bee in his classroom, reads aloud and is as noisy as the others when out on the playground. Thank you Charter teachers and administrators for being so accommodating in helping my son get past this hurdle.

Beware if your child needs special education as the administration would prefer your child to go elsewhere. Although they are required by state and federal laws to provide services, they would prefer your chld to attend another school in the district. There ratings may be higher then their counterparts in Escondido but at whose expense. Be very careful about the school choice you make for your kids.

I just wanted to point out to anyone reading these reviews that while some of the older posts are correct, there was a lot of teacher turnover and the admin was weak, that has all changed. As I type this there is a new Director and all of those old issues have stopped. Teachers are happy and there is great communications with Admin/Staff and parents. They have a very strong, passionate teaching staff that does an incredible job. This IS the elementary school in North County to send your kids to if you can get them in.

Heritage is an absolute gem, in a forest of horrifically bad schools in Escondido. We lucked out last year in getting my daughter in on the first try. Her grades shot straight up from being down in the basement. And her desire to go to school and participate is a blessing. My son did not make it last year, but just got a call yesterday that he will be joining them this year. The staff and teachers at Heritage are great and keep parents well informed. The kids are kept challenged and engaged. Better still is the sense of family and parental participation to help the school succeed. I could not think of any better environment for my kids education that Heritage. Well worth the lottery wait.

I have found Heritage to be an excellent school. We were very lucky to get in - as has been stated that it is a lottery. Our child has had a speech delay and we were concerned that he may not be able to keep up. Far exceeded what we thought was possible. The K teachers have been the best. They have done more for our child than the speech therapists have in 3 years!!! Taught us not to underestimate what they can learn in 1 year!

my son went to a great elementary school in the area and lucked out in the lotto draw and was accepted in 6th grade. I was very nervous about him going somewhere new, but he loves it. He has really adjusted well, I am very grateful to his teacher and the elementary principle, she was easy to talk to and seemed to really listen to me when I met her.

This school is the best around and that is why there is a long waiting list to get in by lottery. The education is traditional and back to basics. The kids have to keep up with homework and school work. There is no slacking off. Tardiness is not tolerated. We are so happy to be a part of this school

Teachers and Directors at our school have worked hard for the success of our students and test scores show their efforts. There are many new activities and improvements. Sadly they are hampered by being treated as second class citizens by the high school. administration. They need to be allowed to be an elementary school and to make some of their own decisions.

Great kids, great teachers, terrible leadership. The communication with leadership is nonexistant. Teacher turnover shows the lack of support from the top. This school could be amazing, we need more alternatives to schooling in Escondido.

I like the school very much. I have 2 sons that go there. One in 8th & the other in 7th. They had a slow start getting started a couple of years ago, but now they love the school. It is far better than the schools they would have been going to. Teachers are Great. They are easy to get a hold of and they let you know what is going on at first onset of a problem. Teachers really care about the students. Back to the Basics is great. I wish they had this school when I was going to school.

This school is poorly managed. The teacher turnover is astounding with poor pay and no medical coverage. They will never keep teachers more than 2 years due to principal leadership.

Overall the school is pretty good. No school is perfect. We have tried public and private and next to homeschooling this school is the best. Our child has done well here except for Science. In time this school will flourish.

This school does well despite itself. There is a core group of parents that make things happen at the school, especially at the lower grades. Teachers are caring, but seem lost (see lack of leadership). They should communicate and work together better. Lack of leadership, poor hiring decisions, mind-boggling teacher turnover, inconsistent discipline/academic standards and no follow-through. Talk of expanding the campus and adding more students seems premature and short-sighted. Get things right first. Get the teachers to stay at least a couple years. My child goes here because the neighborhood school he would attend is one of the worst in the city.

It has been obvious to me that Heritage is doing somthing correct in teaching their students. In spite of many of the bumps associated with a new start up school their API scores are among the highest in the area. I would atribute their success to the amount of parent involvement and a director with vission. He has many hopes for the school and along with teachers, staff, and parents is trying to get things up and going. I believe that if all is accomplished Heritage K-8 will be a school to take notice of.

This school is in its first years of existence, and it has had some successes and failures. For example, the test scores have been among the highest in the district, the staff works extremely hard and is extremely easy to reach. On the other hand, the teachers who are dedicated professionals are looking to go elsewhere because of low pay and poor leadership. The principal, though extremely nice, has no experience in education and takes weeks to make a decision. The school has some extremely strong teachers at the k, 2nd, 4th, and middle school History.

The quality of academics is very high, the teachers are intrested in students learning the material, and they have very creative ways of presenting potentually boring topics. My student finds the science and history classes extreamly intresting. My other students fine their teachers fun and never want to miss school. Music and art are sorly lacking as far as band/choior, but individual teachers do a great job incorperating them into class room time. Parent involvement is pretty good, but I notice that it tends to be the same faces doing most of the voluntier work.

The Core Knowledge Curriculum taught at Heritage is excellent. The teachers this year are fantastic. The administration does not support the teachers or the majority of the parents. My child will not return next year because of the lack of respect given to the children and teachers by the administration.

The administration and staff are truly committed to the Core Knowledge Curriculum, which we think is an excellent liberal arts education. Our child looks forward to going to school every day. The teachers are young (in experience) but enthusiastic and innovative. The year-end projects have been quite creative and the children would not have been able to accomplish the same results at the beginning of the year. This says to me that the children are growing both intellectually and socially. My family is supportive of the requirement to wear uniforms and want the requirement to be strictly enforced. We do not agree that the administration does not support the teachers, and resent any assertion by other parent(s) that 'all' of us hope the situation improves next year. We plan on our child attending this school and the companion high school through the 12th grade for a true college-prep education.

The teachers at this school are fantastic! They teach core knowledge and have the kids very involved. My children have gained a lot of knowledge and love their classrooms. Heritage requires uniforms which we all appreciate. Sadly, the administration is lacking leadership and do not support their teachers. It is unfortunate because they have so much potential for doing great things! We are all hopeful it will improve this next year.
