Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

The review below me says "A great community (PTA/tax bracket). Great students as a result. However it then goes on to say beware. ??? Well as a parent with a 4th grader and 1st grader, I can say with no doubt in my mind, El Oro Way is the place to be. Just a review further down says, there are always bad apples. However, as a whole, this school REALLY cares about the students. The PTA is run very well and unlike other schools, are very welcoming. The President this year is a guy (I know... Most are women). But he really seems to care about the children. The rest of the board are awesome. The teachers are great, despite the few bad apples, but even they are leaps and bounds better then other schools. You will not find a more caring school unless you want to pay through the nose for it.

A great community (PTA/tax bracket). Great students as a result. Disinterested leadership and a few bad apple teachers parading as exceptional. Peer deeper I would advise. Parents beware that is more your involvement than what the school itself can provide. You take it over the top and help each child excel. This is why El Oro Charter succeeds or not.

I am considering sending my child to El Oro Way. I would be interested in current feedback about the school. How are the teachers, the administrators, the culture of the school. Is there a positive feel? Do the kids seem happy? Would love to hear.

First I would like to say, that this school is without a doubt a GREAT school. The staff, administration, and teachers all REALLY care about your child's education. Yes there are always a couple of "JERKS" but for the most parts I couldn't be more pleased. Re: the Complaints. Rather than go into each complaint, the Key to This school and your child's education as with any school is being involved. This school thrives and loves parent involvement. As a parent you will never be denied access to information on how to better your child's education. No they are not going to let you sit in class with them, but you can do a number of things to aid in their education. My Daughter LOVES this school and her teachers. She was always SHY, but they made her feel confident. What more can you ask. Oh yeah, by the way, for those interested in SAS programs for advanced kids.. THIS IS THE SCHOOL......

El Oro Way is a great school. I have a daughter that goes there and I have had two other children graduate from there. They have an excellent staff that cares about each child's individual needs. I have had no complaints. Parents who use this site to talk bad about schools are making judgements based on there own individual experience. More than likely they did not get their way on something. I have known the staff for awhile now and they are great. Budget cuts and increased class sizes make all situations difficult.

A very tight-knit community school -- love it so far! Great staff with caring teachers and the interim principal (Mrs Kravits) is an excellent leader! Also, very helpful and courteous office staff --- impressive group! Go Eagles!

I have seen many changes at El Oro over the years. Some for the better and some that I wish wouldn't have happened. Unfortunately, most of these changes have been decided by the District and are totally out of the control of the school itself. This holds true for all LAUSD schools. Budget cuts, administration changes, libraries closing or hours drastically cut, music programs cut, etc. This is just life within LAUSD and not at El Oro only! Some schools are fortunate to have funding from other outside sources (businesses, trusts, or request from parents for $500+ per student as a direct donation), and use these sources to fund programs that have been cut. El Oro has the library, computer lab, music, PE teacher, and teachers, administration, and parents that DO CARE! Test scores are crammed down the throat of schools across the U.S. Read the paper about teachers in other states changing test scores to make their school look better? Life nor schools are perfect. El Oro Way is a WONDERFUL school that has much to offer a child and involved parents. Beckford (principal came from El Oro) and Van Gogh have much to offer too. Parents should choose the school they feel is best.

I can no longer recommend El Oro Way School to parents of young children as I had been able to do years ago. In my opinion, the combination of poor leadership in the form of an inexperienced principal, teachers, who appear more concerned about test scores than the individual student(s), and the ever increasing budget cuts, which have nearly devastated the once enviable computer lab, and have slashed the time students receive library, music, and art instruction, has resulted in a far less than stellar school experience. If you have a young one - look at Beckford or Van Gogh. From all accounts, these are schools with administrations and faculties, which work together in a proactive way for the good of the school and its students - something, in my opinion, El Oro Way's administrators and faculty have not done for years.

As a parent of three El Oro Way students, this is an amazing school with amazing teachers. Yes, there are a couple of exceptions. However, the first grade teacher, he is amazing!!! He is the reason my daughter looks forward to school and learning! My family and I have volunteered in his class and we have never heard him yell. The kids are so engaged and excited about learning! He is so funny, it is great to see the kids laugh and enjoy their teacher! My daughter tells me, "Mom I want to be a teacher just like him and her former kindergarten teacher" Unfortunately, these teachers are underpaid for all their hard work and dedication beyond the requirements of their job!

This has been one of the worst years of my life at this school. My daughter is in 5th grade and she has been bullied and picked on. The principal does nothing about it. i have complained to her and the District and my complaints have gone on deaf ears. The administration is unapologetic about the fact that they don't adhere to the LAUSD zero bullying, zero tolerance policy. There has been multiple fights but instead of suspending the kids they give them detention so that they can say that there has been zero suspensions. I also have a first grader who is doing well but her teacher yells at the class and if the kids talk he tears up the entire class' test. I was fooled by the rating on here because this school is terrible.

I have been an El Oro Way parent now for 3 years. I can't say enough positive things about the school. The parents are very involved and friendly, the staff and administration is caring and warm and the teachers are all excellent! I have had a great experience there. We have a new principal this year and she's wonderful. So much more responsive than our last one. I really feel a sense of community and warmth at the school. It's a great environment. I highly recommend El Oro Way!

This isn't my home school but was lucky enough to get my child in as a Kindergartner under open enrollment. You feel like you are getting a private education at this public school. The teachers are AWESOME, staff VERY CARING, and the PTA is very active, friendly, and always have the children as the number one priority! You feel like you are at home when you walk onto the campus! A Distinguished School, School for Advanced Studies, the only school in Los Angeles county with a onsite habitat that is used as an outdoor classroon, Wonder of Reading Library, Parent Center....to meet wonderful parents, a Plant Manager and custodian that are the BEST ever, teachers that care about ALL of the students and not just those in their class, a NEW PRINCIPAL that has brought the 'family feeling' back to El Oro Way! What more can you ask for?? El Oro Way IS THE PLACE TO BE!!!

We are a new family to El Oro Way Elementary school and I must say that it has gone much better than I ever anticipated when entering the LAUSD. I cried and was scared to put my children into a public school when they had only attended a religious private school with class sizes being less than half of what the LAUSD per room ratio is. My children have taken to this school and made it their own even on their first day there. It has been an amazing journey already and I have seen such wonderful changes in their independence and responsibility for themselves. I was afraid that they would not get the attention they needed yet, the parent and staff support has been amazing and their needs are being met even better than at their last school. Thank you El Oro for such a wonderful welcome!

My daughter started this school mid year in 2008, in 5th grade. We found the principal and staff to be caring and informative. My daughter's teacher, Ms. Nava Moreno, is top-notch and truly dedicated to the education of the children. I was shocked to learn that she stays afterschool for several hours everyday working with the children. I was also pleasantly surprised at the amount of activities (field trips, guest speakers, events) the school had. The PTA and volunteers are also heavily involved in the school... which makes a world of difference. The campus is expansive and even includes a huge garden area. Culmination occurred this week and was a class act! The ceremony included greetings in various languages, the flag salute, singing, dancing, acting, slide shows, and even cake! I am sorry we did not get to experience more years at this wonderful school but grateful that the time we had. This school is a hidden gem!

My son started kindergarten last September 2008. Now its January 2009 so he has been in school for three and a half months, today he knows his alphabets, recognizes numbers 1 to 100 and reads words like :he, she, the, then, and, when, etc... He loves going to school, has no problem in doing his homework, so overall we are very satisfied and happy . Thank you El Oro Way Elementary!

We just moved into the neighborhood. We love El Oro Way! The office staff were very helpful! Our daughter is in 5th grade and this can be tough for a new student to come in at the end of her elementary career, but we are very pleased with her teacher, principal and curriculum. I wish they had instumental music, though. My daughter has played the violin for two years at her last school.

I am very happy with the teaching and administrative staff at El Oro Way. I transferred my gifted children from another school not too far away because they were not challenged. At El Oro Way, not only are they challenged, but they are encouraged to challenge themselves. The difference is unbelievable.

I'm a new parent at El Oro Way. Coming from a private school, I was initially very scared to send my son to a public school. However, I soon realized that there was nothing to be afraid of! The school is great, there is a lot of support, the office staff is great and the education is superb. I am happy with my decision to take my children to my local school. The academic programs are solid, and improving. I am very impressed with the newly-appointed principal Mrs. Gillis; under her guidance El Oro Way is poised for even better things in the future. There's a very diverse group of students at El Oro Way, and I think this contributes to the school's community feel and desires to become a model school. El Oro Way started full-time kindergarten this year, and considering that it was their first year, in a very difficult level, I thought the teachers were tremendously caring and very dedicated. One drawback - I would like to see a greater amount of homework given to students.

My wife and I were at first concerned over that amount of work given to our first grade son; however, the results do not lie. It was like living in the commercial for Sylvan. My son went from asking me to read him a bead time story to reading them this little brother. He is ravenous with math, a huge feat as I remember my struggles. The insistence that the parent is involved and the fact that the homework requires helps both parent and child to structure their time to receive the utmost of the learning experience. The teacher and principle always make themselves available and the community involvement in the school is reflected in this attitude.

My child is a fifth grader at El Oro Way from a private school. I was really concerned for the safety of the school. It is gated, secure and safe. If you're picking up your child late, the gate is locked, and you'll have to go through the office. This school is really orgnized in dropping off and picking up your child. For parents who haven't experienced a private school safety, I would definitely recommend El Oro Way as a safe environment.

I am actually not a parent but an 'alumni' of the school. El Oro Way is the most amazing public school there is out there. Amazing kids, teachers, staff, everything there is great. I would highly reccomend El Oro Way for any kid. If you want your child to participate in extr-curricular activities, El Oro Way is perfect. Teachers and staff there are always coming up with and signing up for new ideas for the kids to participate in, such as, sports teams, journalism/newspaper, yearbook, student council, science olympiad, math olympiad, sign language club and many more. Just about two years ago they put in a beautiful habitat on the side of the school, it consists of trees, ponds, cacti, it's just a beautiful place where animals are welcome to stay, it is used as an 'outdoor classroom' and is maintained by the students. El Oro Way has neverending possibilities, it is an amazing school.

Wondering what a LAUSD school would really be like was a scarey thought for my wife and I as we watched our child go to Kindergarten for the first time...but to our delight, we were soon assured that El Oro Way was the perfect choice. Not only is the staff in the front office helpful, but the teachers are so involved with reaching each and every student. No one left behind is taken to heart at this school. Now our child is making friends and learning to read so well, it's just a parents dream. Thank you El Oro Way staff for making our educational dreams come true.

I have been a parent at this school for four years. Initially I had based what I was looking for in a school on test scores. El Oro Way has taught me, and my child about so many things that are equally as important. The staff is approachable. The school is clean. It has a sense of community. There will always be room for improvement, but this school recognizes this, and is always looking to better itself. My child has gotten an education with his best interest in mind. And as a parent, I have been made to feel welcomed as well.

This school has a wonderful principal who, I believe, actually knows each and every student and really cares about the needs of each individual. The faculty is extremely professional. The kids I see each day seem content, energetic and happy to be at school. We were concerned, at first, that El Oro's test scores were not as high as some of the other schools in the area. But the quality of teaching and leadership at this school has led us to believe that there is more to being a great school than sky-high scores. There is also much to be said for a school that strives to create well rounded individuals.
