Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

This school is truly amazing. The education is excellent and my child is beginning to LOVE going to school! His grades have improved greatly and the language arts teacher Ms.Marantz is my child's favorite teacher. I would recommend this school to everyone.

I don't think that there is any doubt that Fairburn is a great school. That greatness continues but, I have felt a bit of a disconnect between the school and the parents over the last couple of years. Instead of working together for the betterment of all (as was done in the past), it has become a strained relationship. That being said, my children have always, and continue to enjoy their experience. They have loved their teachers and rave about Coach Sasha. The STAR after-school program is also an outstanding part of Fairburn.

Fairburn has been referred to (by the principal) as the "jewel of LAUSD." As far as public schools in LA, it's ok. It is pretty mediocre, in terms of instruction. There is a ton of "busywork homework." Teachers are less than impressive. They get a lot of help here from volunteers (checking homework, helping with reading, etc.), it's surprising that they're not doing a better job with all the support. Beware of militant-yelling style (in kinder and first grade!). Keep your eyes and ears open and speak up if you see something that concerns you. The principal will support teachers but parents have power. The principal may not respond but there is district support for serious situations. Safety on the yard at recess--kids have been bullied/hit with no supervision. Since it's public, little can be done for the kids with serious behavior issues. If parents have time, they can volunteer and have some say in what goes on and how the money is spent (though the principal has the final word--including a personal assistant that she pays for with school money fundraised by the FYA. It has a good STAR after school program, many enrichment opportunities that others don't, and parent involvement.

Probably the best LAUSD has to offer. Some exceptional teachers. Difficult principle but she produces those all important test scores better than anyone else in the district. Parents raise over $300,000 annually for discretionary spending by the principle, so some extras, but not what it could be. For the average to above average student, the education is as good as anywhere in LA. Technically offers GATE ( gifted) curriculum for every student at all times which really means nothing, but gets the kids labeled for middle school as required for the lottery process. Safe school. Involved, creative parents but their input wanted only for the raising of $$, not its creative use. Could be a great school. Unfortunate with the achievement bar set so low, having 100% of your kids clear minimal competency is important, but one would hope for maximal competency (and there is no published metric for that so why bother). The pieces are here to be exceptional, but it will take some creative leadership and a willingness to take some risks to achieve that. With reliable test scores, there is no incentive to do more. Great for the middle, but kids at the top and bottom lose.

Very strong and active parent involvement with no lack of ideas of how to fund-raise through locales within the Westwood community. Although principal puts emphasis on testing, equal priority is on the arts (visual/dance/music) which is wonderful. Wish kindergarteners didn't have so much rote homework, would appreciate more critical engagement exercises, but overall the kids are happy and healthy.

Good school if your child can sit still, not talk, and take tests well. Beyond that, the administration and at least some of the teachers are not really interested in addressing the whole child. The after school program is fantastic, but I don't think Fairburn should get any credit for that.

Fairburn is a great school. The after school program is also what makes this school a gem. Compared to other highly ranked public schools in LA, it offers an excellent after school and enrichment program for kids. It is also small and very community-oriented.

I am very fortunate that my kids have wonderful teachers. I must say that the parent involvement is very disappointing. My son went to a nearby school last year for kinder and they were so welcoming to parents being involved in class and around school. We were never kicked off campus and always welcomed. Fairburn won't even allow you to be with your kids on the play yard even while your volunteering. Very disappointing. I feel like I am being cheated of sharing this experience with my kinder child this year when I had such a wonderful experience last year. Overall the school is great.

My child attended Fairburn for one year and it was the worst educational choice we've ever made. Test scores are high because they reflect parental income and education in a wealthy neighborhood, not because this is a great school. I had only negative interactions with the principal. The teacher was nice, but was forced to teach to only to the test. The curriculum was completely uninspiring and very pedestrian. We left for a fantastic school outside the neighborhood and even though this means hours of driving time we have never looked back. Now our kids learn in an academically, intellectually and creatively rich environment. They are happy, smart and very well educated. If your child is very bright and inquisitive, if you value deeper academic learning, the arts, music and real intellectual stimulation, if you want a developmentally appropriate education, based on more sophisticated educational methods, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Fairburn has been a great school for my child after our move from elsewhere in the state. The teacher is concerned about children and so is the school. To me, the most important thing about our community public elementary school, Fairburn, is the intermingling of cultures, a modern day microcosm of the American Melting Pot. The kids don't just learn, but live 'Unity through Diversity' as they are introduced to the many different cultures in our community simply by sharing a classroom together. Nonetheless, the faculty at Fairburn celebrates these various cultures and encourages the children to seek an understanding of differing beliefs and customs. I can think of no greater lessons for the future of our nation and our world.

I was a Fairburn parent for 4 years and had 2 kids there. We moved over the summer and I have to say that I appreciate Fairburn much more in retrospect than I did when my children were there. I don't think there is a whole lot of inspired learning that happens there and there is a great deal of emphasis on test scores. However, the classrooms are never chaotic, the kids are almost always respectful and there is an importance placed on learning by the families in attendance that is absent at our new school. And let me tell you, Mrs. Abramowitz may have her problems, but she is a saint compared to our new principal. It's all relative.

I agree with the last review, Fairburn does need a little help. However, the help needs to come from parent volunteers. So many of the parents are open and available when it comes time to complain about an issue, but when something needs to be done...they are strangely absent. Nearly all school fundraisers are run by the same small group of parents, who volunteer their own time for the good of the school and its students. The students have a plethora of opportunities available to them including: music and computer classes, art/dance/theatre, and an outstanding P.E. program run by a great coach. The teachers are all very experienced, and the principal, although difficult to deal with at times, only wants the best for the school.

Fairburn needs a lot of help! Test scores are great, but the enviroment for learning and building a community is toxic. Recently families have been pulling their kids for St. Pauls and other learning institutions -- we are joining them. I sincerly hope Fairburn can live up to it's neighboring schools like Warner and Westwood and the community can learn to work together in the interest of their kids!

My two daughters attended Fairburn. Overall, I'm very happy with the school - great parents, wonderful kids, cooperative and nurturing teachers, but the principal is ridiculous. She doesn't have any PR skills and doesn't know how to make relationships neither with kids nor with parents. She has her favorites who do things for her and keep her at school (they are usually on permit), but the most of the people are unhappy with her. My daughters never had any problems at school, so I never needed her help. My review is based only on 6 years presence at school. Anyhow, I would highly recommend Fairburn to everybody for the wonderful elementary school experience.

I am the parent of a child at Fairburn and am generally very happy with the school. The 'booster' club has done some nice things, but the 2 people running it are awful to deal with. I'm a parent of a child who only attended Fairburn for 2 months because we were so disappointed in the school. My son was placed in a private school and we've been very happy with the new school. The particular teacher that my son had was horrible-yelling at the children and lacking any method or philosophy towards her teaching. Before we removed our child from the school, I phoned the principal to discuss options with her but she never returned the call. I was also very unhappy with the first day of kindergarten and wish I had done as the other mother and gone into the class. I found the parent body and student body to be the best part of the school. There are many nice families.

The difference between Fairburn being a good school, and having it become a great school, is really the principal. I think that the principal has her heart in the right place, but she can be both dishonest and Machiavellian in her approach to handling the kids and the parents. In our case, she has not only failed to live up to the promises she has made, but she has not been honest and straightforward about the matter(s). I agree with one of the prior reviewers that children with higher than average academic potential will be left behind at Fairburn, and minimizing differentiation between students is part of the culture that the principal tries to create: you either value this or you don't. If you want an academic environment that will accommodate differentiation between students, this probably isn't the school for you.

The teachers are the best in this school they truly care for the students but the principal in the other hand only cares about the test scores.

My son finished kinder and 1st grade in this school. We are very happy with the school overall. Teachers are very nice and competent. The principal uses 'tough love' approach which can be hard on some protective parents. The only down side is too much focus on test scores. Good parents involvement/PTA in general.

I am very happy with the education my son is getting at this school. His second grade teacher is a wonder. Third and fourth grade teacher have also been fine. The school has a working conputer lab, a chorus program, and a good after-school program.

Class size is larger than other schools! As a result students get less individual attention.

I am extremely impressed with this school. The teachers are caring, the school itself is a little gem, and the STAR program is tops! The principal is a bit gruff, but that's her personality. She seems to be trying harder this year to be more of a people-person and is definitely more accessible.

Academically this school is supposed to be fantastic. My child just started kindergarten and my one complaint is that there is too much homework for kids that age after a full day at school. I also have been less than thrilled with the way that certain major issues have been handled, I have foun dvery little regard for the children and great emphasis on test scores, school accomplishments, etc... I keep waiting to find the great school that everyone has told me I am so lucky to have as my home school. Test scores aren't everything.

Fairburn is a great community school! The teachers are absolutely superb and the administration works hard to placate with the highly educated and involved parents. Fairburn is the best that education, private or public, has to offer!

Fairburn is a small school with a diverse student population. The teachers are dedicated and there is a lot of parental involvment. The students do very well on standardized tests.

We've been extremely pleased with our Fairburn experience, and I can highly recommend the school to neighborhood families. Because of the increasing popularity of the school, there are very few places for students on permit - last year no new permits were taken. But Fairburn remains a small neighborhood school - fewer than 400 students, it is friendly and low-key. In 2005, Fairburn implemented an all-day Kindergarten program, with great success. The teachers are excellent, experienced, qualified. Fairburn is an academic school, in the top 10 of high scoring schools in LAUSD. Many students are GATE identified. However, the school does not separate the children, but provides an enriched differentiated education within each classroom, so all students benefit. There is a core group of active parents, who have raised money for the extras that the school district does not pay for - computer lab, library renovation, playground upgrade, P.E.coach, Science textbooks.

I've been an active parent, and I don't believe that parents want to 'run everything.' We just want to have be treated with respect by the Principal. I recommend that parents who want to be active in the school stay close to home, working in their own child's classroom.

I would disagree with a recent review that states this school is ideal for your gifted child. There are a lot of gifted kids drawn here because we used to have streamed classes from grades 3-5. However, two years ago, the principal abolished this. She says we still have an SAS, but none of us can figure out what exactly that means if the gifted kids don't do anything different than the rest of the kids. I do agree with everything people have been saying about the prickly, power mad principal. The kids, teachers, and parents are afraid of her. She seems to prefer it that way. She thinks parents want to 'take over' and attacks them, when in fact they are just representing parent interests and want to be treated respectfully. It's totally wrong to run the school like the Mafia, punishing those don't agree with one, and rewarding pals.

Academic programs are good. All grades tend to give a tremendous amount of homework. Music is available at a very high cost. Parent involvement is high but tends to be overdone by just a few parents who want to control everything.

-This is an excellent school for your child if s/he's very strong academically. The teachers are fabulous. -Availability of music: Chorus, plus Larry Newman's fee charging optional afterschool instrumental program is available. -Art: the school was selected to participate in the Arts Prototype Program this year, so if your child is lucky enough to be in a classroom the year his teacher is going through the program, you will LOVE it. Sports: Afterschool Beyond the Bell pickup games, and STAR soccer and basketball leagues There is a booster club provided sports instructor. -Extracurricular : STAR classes, esp. woodcraft, drama, and science are excellent. -Level of parent involvement: Donations to the booster club went down significantly this year, in part to protest certain morale draining decisions on the part of the principal, who gossips avidly and sets parents at each others' throats. The principal is scary, but if you're lucky you won't encounter her.

This school is great! My son started here from Kindergarten and left in the middle of 1st grade because we had to relocate. His class teachers were very nice with young children. The school has a great after school program with lots of enrichment classes.

Great school, but the principal is very much anti-parent. She wouldn't even let the parents bring their kindergarteners to class on the first day of school. She is inflexible and has alienated many people at the school. Most of the teachers are great. The kids are doing very advanced work as well and the playground is wonderful.

Both my kids attend Fairburn and both love it. They have met great teachers and have made great friends. One unique thing about Fairburn that I rarely see in other schools is the high parent participation that we have at Fairburn. Although at times it may get overwhelming, especially with 2 kids, teacher and parent involvement is what makes Fairburn the great school that it is.

My son is so happy in this school. Thank you Fairburn and thank you Ms. Brown for doing the great job. This is a great school. Highly recommendable. We will miss you all. Sincerely, Happy Mother

My daughter came from a private school and is getting more one on one attention here at Fairburn and she is flourishing nicely. I can't believe the self confidence that she has now. She can't wait for vacation time to be over, all she asks is 'when is school starting again, I can't wait to go back my teacher makes everything so much fun, you don't even realize your learning it feels like play time especially in science and math.' What! My daughter saying she's having fun in school she's in 4th grade now and this is the first time ever. Thanks Fairbun teachers and your amazing principal who takes the time to know all her students personally.

I used to be a student at Fairburn, that was six years ago. I left in '97, just when they started putting grass on the playground. I don't know what it looks like now, but I hope to visit soon. I probably had the best time of my childhood during my first four elementary years. The school was great.

I think the principal is very insensitive, and seems obsessed with test scores. The after school programs are where the true enrichment is at - STAR - which is too bad.
