Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

The best elementary school in LAUSD. Teachers are exceptional and the parents are involved. Now if we could just get the County and State to chip in more tax dollars instead of less!!!

My daughter is about to finish her first year at Ivanhoe. Her teachers and principle have been outstanding. The community involvement has been out of this world. It makes me extremely happy that we purchased a home in this area of Los Angeles. It s hard to find areas of this city that feel like a community. This school is a big part of the reason this little hamlet does.

As the current school year comes to a close with my child finishing 4th grade, I panic to think I only have one more year at this incredible school. What middle school can hold a candle to Ivanhoe? Test scores & stats are just the basics of what make a school good but what makes a school GREAT is all of what Ivanhoe is (and I did not say offers intentionally). The diversity (both ethnically & economically) alone is an incredible learning experience not usually appreciated by a child until much later in life (yet priceless in today's global environment). From the maintenance people all the way up to the principal you will find the most caring & giving individuals. My experience through the years has been that the teachers do not bolt when the bell rings but instead doors have been open & inviting to both students & parents. But what really is the "piece de resistance" are the parents. A friend once told me that the world is made up of two types of people, givers & takers. Ivanhoe definitely tips the scale with givers, from Writers' Workshops to Guitar Clubs and more all free for the kids by countless hours generously given by parents. IVANHOE-the diamond in a megalopolis!

I graduated from Ivanhoe in February 1939. It was an excellent school in those days,. My 6th grade teacher was Mrs. Henzey who took me and three or four other boys down to the Department of Water and Power and observed how they managed things. i believe her husband was employed there. The favorite sport was soccer which was played on a lopsided field using twin willow trees for goals on the west side and a tree and corner of a bungalow on the east. The school was a two story brick building which apparently got through the 1932 Long Beach earthquake unscathed since it was in use then. I had many friends at the school. All of us matriculated to Thomas Starr King for Junior High school.

Since this is the only school my child has attended, I can't compare it against anything else, so 4 stars seems reasonable. We are now in 3rd grade and my child is thriving! I cannot, however, say that about our 2nd grade experience. We suffered through a very rough year with a teacher who was a very bad match for my child. Like every school, Ivanhoe is about the quality of the teacher you get. Some are stellar, others are not. And fortunately, we lucked out this year! There are loads of volunteer opportunities and parental involvement is welcomed and appreciated! This is a great community, and I feel my child is loved and appreciated by the staff and administration.

The office staff is rude. They seem anoyed when parents come into the office to ask questions. The principal is never available and per her staff is never available to communicate with parents. The school is not kept very well... Very disappointed with all this issues.

Ivanhoe has great staff, teachers, parent participation, and great facilitites! It makes a difference when the school your child goes to actually feels and looks like a place to nurture hungry minds. The teachers are professional and treat their students with respect. The administration makes a point to get to know the families they serve. And parents are recognized as vital partners in our children's education. Plus the academics are pretty darn good, too!

Absolutely outstanding public school; rivals some of the finest private ones in the country's second largest metropolis. What's truly amazing is the commitment from the parent body, which matches the devotion of teachers and staff. In the end, it's a happy, educational sanctuary.

The school is terrific in so many ways. It has the same true community feeling that I grew up with. The teachers are truly passionate about teaching and the kids are diverse while also being very happy and proud of their school. It is also about the parents that have welcomed me and my son with big open arms.

Excellent school! We just moved here from San Diego and were worried about the education in LA Unified schools. Ivanhoe is testing out a new method of math learning called Singapore Math to the first graders. I'm so happy we chose this school. It's impressive!

Ivanhoe is an oasis. The staff work together well and the administrator is supportive which means the children benefit. The student population is extremely diverse, both ethnically and economically. The surrounding community of Silver Lake provides great support to its neighborhood school. The academics are tough, yet creative. The school has excellent arts instruction and programs. The level of parent involvement is high. The parents raise money to support extra music teacher days, arts programs, p.e. teachers, and other support for the educational program. Both my children had good experiences at Ivanhoe.

Ivanhoe rates the very best school in the city (rated just behind Wonderland in Laurel Canyon). Excellent diversity, excellent curriculum, additional programs like karate through private funding. Because of its diversity and parent involvement, I favor Ivanhoe as the best school in LA.

Ivanhoe is unusual in that it offers a School for Advanced Studies program that is included in the regular classrooms. The school follows the usual LAUSD format of Open Court reading, and is fairly academically driven, with lots of worksheets given. The teacher quality varies. The active PTA raises money for physical education and library books, and hosts monthly events throughout the year, such as silent auctions, jogathons, film nights. Art classes are offered as well as music. The after school program, Camelot, is located on the grounds and is instrumental in helping the school. They provide an exciting and varied program of activities.

A quality school in an idyllic environment. The 'Camelot' after school program offers karate, filmmaking, dance, art, chess, woodworking and much more. Teachers are by and large excellent. And parents work very closely with the teachers and administration to create a positive learning experience for the children.

Ivanhoe Elementary is one of THE BEST public elementary schools in the L.A. area. The level of parental involvement at this school is almost unparalleled, I believe. My daughter's 1st/2nd grade class had at least 2 volunteers every day which is awesome since it allowed their teacher to do so much more with the kids. All of the teachers that my daughter had for the last 2 years were excellent; I think a special mention should be made for Mr. Santiesteban (the kids call him Sr. Carlos). The amount of material and learning this man got into a single class day while maintaining complete control of the classroom was amazing; and this was with a 1/2 day kinder class! The music teacher, Mr. Bockelman was also of my child's favorites. She looked forward to going music class every week. Each grade goes to P.E., Music, & Art on a rotating 6week schedule.
