Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

This school is all about which program your child is in. Our son was part of the School for Environmental Studies, and it was AMAZING! We were so happy with the program. They receive some sort of grant and do not participate in the magnet program because they are better than a magnet! My son went on so many field trips and started loving school! The director is fantastic and is always there when you need him. The principal and assistant principals aren't so great but that didn't seem to affect the Environmental program our son was in. The director lives in the neighborhood and really cares about the kids.

Currently a student at enrolled in the SAS program at John Marshall High, and I am trying to transfer. The teachers are horrible; they make racist comments, have class favorites, and are extremely rude. On top of that, the teachers that I have don't teach, yet they have a very high unset standard. I've never disliked a school to this extent. All of my other friends are trying to look for other high schools to attend because they don't like the school as well. I hope there would be better teachers later on for the future students.

I am a Marshall alum and I loved my time there. It was academically challenging and I was able to be involved in Theatre activities as well. But its not solely on the students or teachers to make a school great, parents HAVE to get involved. There was a new math when I went called IMP or IMG... my mother talked to the academic counselors and insisted I take regular math instead and I am so glad she did. It helped me out a lot more when I went to UCLA than taking that weird experimental math. And yes, even though this school may be rated a 5, I went to UCLA and graduated from there with honors! Marshall is great especially when everyone in the community is involved.

I am the parent of a new student -- a 9th grader. Many of his friends claim to have good experiences here and some parents also praise the school, but our experience has been otherwise. We have found low classroom instruction skills from 5 of his six teachers including low-level questioning, lack of course and daily lesson objectives, no efforts to differentiate instruction, and no classroom discussion. School wide, the leadership has not taken an active interest in improving classroom teaching. Communication with parents is weak compared to other nearby public schools.

Marshall's test scores may fall below the scores of other schools such as Granada Hills Charter, or ECR, but definitley offers a great educational system. The campus is beautiful, and offers so much diversity! You see skin color of all kinds. HAD A HARVARD BOUND GRADUATE 2011 and 2006, and many years in between and before. Acadeca won NATIONALS 1995 and 1998 and got second in California state 2011. There's something for everyone. Counselors are all caring! One problem and only one it is very crowded especially since tracks were absolved 2011-2012. Other than that it is great! I am proud to be a barrister!

John Marshall is a well-rounded school, with an emphasis in academics as well as athletics and performing arts. The Academic Decathlon did extremely well, as usual, and the Magnet and SAS program scored very well. Several of its sports teams ranked first in the Northern league, and continued on to compete further in city. The school's orchestra and a few bands got the chance to play at the Greek Theater, which was a positive experience for the students.

John Marshall High School is an exceptional public school. The AP classes offer a curriculum that is challenging and engaging for students that are interested in learning and have a mindset to succeed. I am grateful that my child had the opportunity to attend this school. The diversity of the student population is a dying breed. No public school is 100% perfect, but this is the sole responsibility of the parents that do not hold their children accountable. Unfortunately, public schools are always blamed for student achievement, yet parents are not held liable for their lack of parenting skills. John Marshall High School should really have someone check addresses of students, I bet a large portion shouldn't even be at the school, especially the ones that go to disrupt learning for those that want a quality education!

This year, Marshall went very well. Got Academic Decathlon first rank in LAUSD ,and Large school nation-wide, it's really pretty good to here that class of 2010 had enrolled in Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Tulane, UCs and etc. It's unforgettable. Everything's perfect...!!!

Im currently a junior at Marshall. Although the students in our school get is very low, it's not the faculty's fault. The students decided not to do their best. I, on the other hand, am having a great time in this school. I was able to experience many things by joining different clubs. Another reason why I love this school is because it's filled with students from different places - that's one way to learn about other cultures.

In spite of the difficulties of operating within the Los Angeles Unified School District, John Marshall HS continues to be a superb school due to the combination of incredibly supportive teachers, great academic programs, and even caring administrators. Beyond the personnel, the look of the campus and the cultural diversity are two major positives. One might offhandedly see the size of the student population or the low state test scores as indicative of the school's deficiencies, but these are only an issue if a student doesn't take even the most minor effort to find a program or niche in which to be involved. Essentially, if the student makes a small effort to reach out, they will find an enormous amount of opportunity at Marshall. Disclosure: I am an alumnus.

John Marshall Senior High School is awesome because they offer so much to the students. This school has resources that can aid them to reaching higher education. This school has smaller learning communities in which students are able to take classes that not only pertain to the A-G Requirements, but also classes that are of interest to the students (i.e drama class, music, politics, etc.) Not only that, but I believe this school provides a place in which students are both social and studious. John Marshall Senior High for the win!

Proud or our school and proud of our fellow students, alumni and faculty. Our historic brick main building stands as a monument to days gone by when buildings were not cement monoliths. My son had a good experience at Marshall. His best teachers were Mike Finn (guitar), Dorothy Lee (visual art), Mr. Zwick (English), Jeffreys, Fundukian, and Jones (Magnet History department). These teachers made a huge difference in his education and how he saw himself as a learner. Each of them helped him develop academic and artistic confidence. He's now a University of California junior thanks to his positive high school experience.

After spending most of my adolescent life on campus, I learned to love this school. I had many life changing experiences because of this school. I honestly believe that at another school I would have just been a student, a plain ol' regular student who conformed to just going to school from 7 to 3 and go home and do homework. I became more involved because of the vast amounts of programs that this school has to offer. It has rich history and is in my opinion a great learning environment. John Marshall has many small learning communities that allow student growth and understanding. The teachers for the most part understand and attempt to actually teach the children. Of course there are some more experienced and well liked teachers, but still they are trying to the best of their ability to aid the student. Also the numbers of AP classes offered, is something we should take to consideration, in order to help the students we need new materials. New textbooks and stuff. When you are asked to 'Brag' about your school, it is really hard for me bacause although I think its a fantastic school, it can improve and be more that just fantastic. Hopefully it will. -Thank You-

It`s my childs second year at Marshall and she is enjoying it very much. The SAS (school of advanced studies) program is very good. The program sets standards very high. The environment is very nice and clean. The teachers are very supportive. Overall I have no complaints.

The teaching staff here is great, if your child shows motivation this can be a great school. Although very crowded, the population is as diverce as the surounding area. There is a great Arts dept. and a dedicated class of teachers. The overcrowding makes it a bit difficult on the counselers and admin. to keep track of everyone's grades but an active parent can ensure a good education for his or her child. I feel that there staff really cares about the students and would take time out to help any child that asked.

The academic programs are slightly above average. It all depends on the student. If the student applies him/herself, then the school is excellent. Otherwise, you are just the standard student. This is truly a mixed area, socio-economically. The school is in a wealthy area and a lot of students who feed into the school are from poorer neighborhoods. I really didn't see must parent involvement.

Grea quality in education. Excellent music, art, sports and other extra curricular activities programs. The parental involvement is the best.

this is a great school for kids who are motivated, it might be harder for kids who are already having problems with their grades, although the teachers are patient and caring and may help to turn around grades.

John Marshall High School has the potential (that is, it has all the elements) to become a great school. It has great teachers, a wide offering of AP classes (distributed unequally among all three tracks), a wide variety of extracurricular activities and sports teams, as well as options for art classes; however, it lacks quality in each of these (some more than others, though). What it needs is more planning. The overcrowding has much to do with it.

Marshall High School is one of the best in the LAUSD. It is arguably the best year-round school in the LAUSD. Its good reputation has been steadily declining since it became a year-round school about 10 years ago. It has many extra-curricular activities; 21 AP course offerings (all 21 offered on track A; 8 on track B; and about 12 on track C). Despite the lack of funding, Marshall has done well enough to be considered a good school. Given time, it can return to its glory days. It's a very beautiful campus, with minor trash problems. There are many quality teachers, and of course, the few mediocre teachers. All in all, a good enough school.

As a former student from Marshall High School, I feel very proud that my daughter is now attending the same school. The campus is beautiful and safe. The teachers are excellent and supportive with their students. I think this is a very good school.

I am a former student from 1998. Most of the teachers were encouraging & good to work with. However, class size is enormous, and the school houses MANY more students than it was intended for. Individual attention is hard to come by.

The school, as well as the neighborhood, is beautiful. Not only that, but the options and availability of courses is amazing for an LAUSD school.
