INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

A wonderful school. This school has a great community feel - the faculty, parents and students all seem to really enjoy each others company. I am really pleased that my child is learning math with the Singapore Math program. It is the way that I believe Math should be taught - with an understanding of the concepts rather than sheer memorization. So glad we get to be part of this school.

Melrose Magnet is a small community of parents, teachers and students who are dedicated to the education and growth of the students. The children at Melrose are learning from Project Based lessons, Singapore Math and hands on computer time. I have been a parent at Melrose for 6 years and feel it is an excellent choice for those looking for public elementary schools. One last thing: The Principal is fantastic and very dedicated.

Proof that investing in public schools WORKS! An outstanding staff, a curriculum dedicated to the belief that if you teach to the top of the class all children will rise to the challenge, and a parent community that is a family. Students thrive academically and socially in this beautifully diverse school. Melrose Magnet is well ahead of the curve in everything you could want for your child.

My son attended another school during his 1st grade year, although we liked his other school I truly didn't believed that it was the school for him. I knew he needed something more, something that would nurture his creativeness and grow innate seeds that he didn't have an opportunity develop before. This was met at Melrose Elementary. I am always amazed at the staff, teachers, and administrators who really dedicate time, not only to my son but to each student. IT'S an AMAZING place for him as a student, and as a parent to know that there is such a school that really wants to make a difference for the students, parents, and the community. WE LOVE! Melrose Elementary School.

My daughters both attend this school. I loved it from the first time I stepped foot in the vintage auditorium, and I have come to love it more every day because of the dedicated staff and the amazing community of families! My daughters have blossomed - great friends, loving to read AND do math - I couldn't ask for more. There are incredible opportunities to get involved, and the parents do! From the parent who organized the school's participation in the Global Cardboard Challenge, to the group of parents who recently threw a school wide Korean BBQ and Movie Night fundraiser, to the parents who greet you in morning at the valet drop off and pick up your recycling from you at the same time, this is a remarkable oasis in the heart of Los Angeles. Our family is so fortunate to be part of it!

When I used to give school tours three years ago, I told parents that this little gem was LA's "best kept secret". Well, I guess the word is out now! We have an API Score that has jumped from about 700 to almost 900, an Apple Distinguished Award, a CA Distinguished Award, a technology program that has become the gold standard for LAUSD, Singapore Math, a gracious new principal in Stephanie Harris who jumped in to takeover for our visionary, Bernadette Lucas, who went to the district to bring technology to ALL students, the most amazing students who "reach for the stars", a group of parents who stop at nothing to make a positive impact on the children, and the phenomenal teachers who inspire us all with their ongoing education and commitment to excellence. All of this would not be possible without the heart and soul of a community of people who have come together despite ethnical, sociological and economic differences, to work together toward a common goal; the well-being of our children. Been to the school from K-5th grade and every year it gets better. You can not beat the atmosphere, the teacher and parent involvement that is needed for our schools to be successful in LAUSD. The positive influences and the resources that each student has to be able to become productive and knowledgeable to succeed in life is taught in the curriculum and the hidden curriculum of education. The answers are within our STAR Students on how successful Melrose is. We need the funds to continue the programs for our Kids and their future. Safe, Tolerant, Aware, Respectful, Responsible, Go STAR PRIDE! Thank you for supporting.

Melrose MST Magnet has been the BEST school I have ever went to. I have moved between many schools to see which one was the best, and I found my self to say Melrose MST Magnet is. My teachers here have helped me alot. Just for them, now I am at a really good middle school, John Burroughs. I will always be thankful to them; and not to forget, the principal really made this school wonderful. To her interest and hardwork, I had my best years there, even by being the General Maneger of the Student Store.

AWESOME! The principal firstly is an epitome of poise, intelligence and educator. She leads by example but with much gentle and full of heart kind of leadership. The teachers are thus also inspired despite the challenges in their profession. And so kudos to the parents who are tirelessly present to support whatever the school needs in manpower. The students are very lucky. And because they see the great dynamics among all their educators, staff and parents, the children are motivated to learn and to know even beyond the four walls of their classrooms. There is just so much positive energy surrounding the campus. We love it like it is our second home. GO STARRS!

I have worked at several schools and worked with many teachers. The staff at Melrose are among the most dedicated, hard-working educators whose focus is not only academic excellence but character building to create outstanding citizens. This certainly includes Ms. "O"; a diligent and caring teacher whose high expectations has unleashed her students' potential.

My youngest friend (age 5) attends this school. He's a wonderful kid, very interested in reading, exploring the world around him and being kind to animals. I've met the parents of other students and they are all very involved and supportive. This school offers a place to learn both scholastic and social skills in a warm, caring environment. I had high hopes for this school when it turned Magnet. Unfortunately, there's so much focus on technology that the children have learned no Social Studies. Also, there is more focus on the children learning to type so they can use their laptops; when they should be focusing on academics. My child came from a good public school but with the Magnet opportunity we were offered we changed schools. Sorry to say I wish I hadn't. The school is diverse and has a strong parent involvement. However, the meetings are so early you would have to be unemployed or working a graveyard shift to attend; therefore leaving you a bit clueless. This school now has a lower API now then it dis one year ago; sad news. With my child going to the 5th grade I am concerned if she will pass any entrance exams for some of the private schools.

Melrsoe Avenue Elementary school is one big happy family. Everyone is involved in their child's education and everyone strives to make it a better place four our kids. Our parents get down and dirty from teaching nutritions, gardening, beautifying the school, arranging outings, and getting to know one another. The staff loves our children and the teachers are some of LA's finest! The school turned Magnet this year and our kids and families are more excited about the school than ever.

I can not be more happy with our school. I have 2 children there in 5th and 2nd grade. This year our school became Magnet and there are so many wonderful things happening there. We are like one big family and 'reaching for the stars'. The curriculum is great: fun and challenging at the same time. The principle and teachers are simply awesome and amazing. Most of them stay until 6:00 pm to prepare for the next school day. My children wake up in the morning eager to go to school....they absolutely love it! I've observed quite a few schools before and can definitely say that Melrose Avenue Elementary Math/Science/Technology Magnet School is truly one of a kind. Just come to one of our tours and you'll see what I mean.

This is our first year as a school-wide Math/Science/Technology Magnet. In a single year, our enrollment grew by 1/3 and 80% of our teachers are new. We are implementing an Apple 1:1 laptop take home leasing program (3rd-6th grade) / 2:1 laptop beginning in 2nd... All the classrooms are equipped with SmartBoards and Elmos. We have an iMac Lab with flats screens, a science lab and are implementing Singapore Math. Our 501(c)(3) PTO was launched this year and our membership currently tallies 130. We offer Mad Science, Yoga, Champions and YS Care after-school enrichment programs. We won a Loews $5,000 grant to create outdoor organic classroom gardens, which Whole Foods is sponsoring. We are a Title 1 school, have Deaf, Hard of Hearing (prek-6th) program, ARTS Prototype and Orchestra, beginning in 3rd and are incorporating a Nutrition program and launching 'Light Up the Library' to build our volunteer, mentoring and Homework clubs . If there is ever a candidate for a best school, Melrose Elementary M/S/T Magnet is it! Phooey on the '4!' Please look beyond old data and take in account of the enormous changes occurring right now. We are a '10' at the very least!

My daughter's first experience in a school setting was last year in the pre-k program at Melrose. Initially she had a tough time adjusting, but I couldn't have asked for more supportive teachers. They went above and beyond to help her through this difficult period. I had planned to send her to private school for kindergarten, but opted to re-enroll at Melrose because of her outstanding pre-k experience. She particularly enjoys the arts program, hands on science, and computer lab. The principal is incredible! She is genuinely concerned about this school, its students; and parents. Her enthusiasm, involvement and optimism are contagious, and very much appreciated by the Melrose Elementary School community. I truly believe that Melrose Elementary is destined to do great things with Ms. Lucas at the helm.

My son is a kindergartener and we are having the best experience. Here's the skinny: 805 API (up over 100 points in the last two years), committed to incorporating the arts (visual, dance, theater, band), free after-school Champions (national program) care until 6:00 PM and Journalism Book Clubs lead by our principal who is approachable and outstanding; a committed experienced staff, a spacious campus with a state-of-the art computer lab, librarian, auditorium... monthly tours are available. You can call the school for more details.

My son just completed second grade at Melrose. I may be moving and was referred to this page by his teacher to help me find a quality school. My son has been at Melrose since Kindergarten. The school was under the directorship of an embattled principal who lasted only that year. For the last two years, the new principal, Mr Velasco, has taken the reins of the school, and working closely with staff and parents, has turned test scores around, expanded the arts program, is working toward funding additional playground equipment, and is always looking for ways to provide more quality teaching materials for students. There are good and not-so-good teachers, but I have met and worked with many of them, and I can tell you that the majority hold the children's interest as a priority one. If I could tell you one thing about Melrose today, it would be that they care.

The teachers never gave up. There was low moral, but the students always came first. There are plenty of resources and nothing was given up to focus on low test scores. There was and is an arts program which offers theater, dance, and visual arts. There was and is an orchestra program. I know of other schools that do not offer such programs unless parents pay for those services.

I am very happy with Melrose Avenue Elementary School. Parent involvement is encouraged through education, forums & information. The principal & staff are available & interested in our children. I really appreciate the fact that I know many of the staff & children by name. It is very family oriented. I was especially impressed with the Pre-K program, which was my introduction to the school. I think it is imortant for us to learn how we can help in our children's education, as parents. Being a part of the school & community is a big part of what I like about Melrose Avenue Elementary School, Principal Velasco & Staff!

We moved our child there in sept. 2004 And were stunned with new principal. Lots of big talk, but no real compassion and empathy for children. Pure administrator. Coolness trickled down to the teachers, who seemed to stop caring. Great assistant principal mrs. Palmer, though, smart/caring/loving, which helped a lot. The school has virtually no resources. They eliminated all the 'extras' to work on low test scores. Too many kids were english learners. The school is a concrete jungle, no after-school resources to speak of. No quiet place indoors to do homework after school. Crummy lunch area. We finally transferred him to another school 18n 2005 near work. Melrose is a miserable place!

Melrose Avenue Elementary could be one of the best schools, but the district has not provided the school with adequate leadership. The school went from a leader who took too much control to one that takes no control and does not follow through on any thing.

I have to disagree with the comment regarding a weak arts program. I have been involved with other schools in the district and I think the arts program is great! We are very lucky here to have any type of art program. We have visual art, theater and dance. I don't know many schools that offer such programs. The leadership is lacking, but the teachers and office staff are great.

teachers are great, and very cooperative, but the extracurricular programs are lacking very much. there is not much integration of diversity in the school. i find that like most of the other public schools in the area, the influence of hispanic culture dominates the student body and everything in the school. i am hispanic, as well as a mix of other races, we speak several languages in our house, but we speak and write english in the proper british form. hispanics are the majority, but we are still in the united states, and i feel that we are moving away from that foundation.
