The facts speak volumes for this school. Four directors in 3 years. At least 9 teachers have left the school in 3 years. This school is a least 3 years away in terms of getting some semblance of stability and continuity. As a parent you should ask your self do you really want your child and your family to go though the growing pains of this school. Is Greenwood that amazing? As a parent who has just left i say it is not. My child is 2 years behind in most areas. Other parents who have left have the same issues.
I am a parent of two children at Greenwood and I could tell you quite a lot of wonderful things that I think about the school. I think it would be more helpful to tell you what I have observed. I have watched my children learn to read the way they learned to walk and talk. With the same amount of ownership and excitement by them that those milestones elicited. They experienced an internal success that was nurtured and supported by the adults around them. I have seen children win National poetry contests, transition to the high schools of their choice including Urban, Marin Academy and Mt. Tamalpias, head to Standford or start their own business. I am watching my children grow into confident and interested individuals capable of holding their core solid as they seek out what the world has to offer and discover what they can bring to it. People coming and going within an institution is as normal as birth and death. The only drama in coming and going is when it is not done with grace or integrity.
I have never written an online review in my life but I am moved to do this: In all sincerity, if you are looking for a school where your kid will love going to school... If you are looking for a school that gives your kid a fighting chance of being a kid.... if you want your kid to grow up to be teenager that is present and looks you in the eye when he/she speaks to you... if you want your kid to be prepared to take any test that comes his/her way later on in l then you should come and check this place out for yourself. Do not trust me or anyone else who writes here but do go see it yourself. (For every 1 squeaky person who has negative comments, there are countless others for whom Greenwood is working. It simply hasn't found a worthy director yet.)
We couldn't be happier with the Greenwood School. There have been some changes over the past few years, but the changes have made the school stronger, e.g., there is an exceptional learning support program, a school director. This is one of the few private schools that *truly* integrates art, music and movement into the entire curriculum each and every day. Don't be fooled, it is very academically rigorous and graduates have reported that eighth grade at Greenwood was considerably harder than freshman year at their private high schools.
Greenwood is more than just a fantastic school, it is a collaborative parent and teacher community. Each child is able to move at his/her own pace through a rich curriculum without the distractions and negative influences of intense media exposure. The kids work with incredibly skilled teachers in specialties like nature studies, foreign language, language arts, and they get an enormous amount of individual attention. The children are kind to and appreciative of one another. I wish I'd been able to go to a school like this!
Greenwood School is a unique school that provides many arts and teaches in an artful way. They are ecologically mindful. The child is nurtured, etc....
Greenwood School has gone though some massive changes in the last 2 years. Teacher turnover or firings have been the norm. I would not recommend to anyone. If you take the tour you will be impressed. However once you start to look under the rug so to speak. The propaganda just does not ring true. Our child will be graduating soon thank goodness.
Greenwood school has a lovely environment and some sweet teachers, but we found that the Waldorf approach did not fit with our children's learning styles. This doesn't have to be anyone's fault, but within the Waldorf system there is often the assurance that if you hang in there things will change, your child will grow into it, reading especially. In hindsight, we hung in longer than was good for our children who are still making up what they didn't get somewhere else.
Our fmaily loves Greenwood School. There is no other school like in around Marin. They have rigorous academics as well as a Waldorf Inspired approach. They conbine the bestof Waldorf with t bestofindependent private schools. Greenwood School just established an Learning Support Program which has been wonderful for my son. The shool honors Nature and expresses that through its seasonal festivals. They are amazing events. This school was once a small homescool setting and has transformed into this amazing independent private Waldorf Inspired school. Comet the school for a tour. You'll love it!
The Greenwood School is an amazing school. As we raise our children in the 21st century a stong environmental education is essential. The Environmental education program is amazing. The schools values are aligned with the programs. It is a 'green'school with recycling, composting, organic everything. They honor Universal spirituality and educate the soulfulness of the children through nature. They have a wonderful gardening program, an award winning Poetry program. The students at Greenwood School have won the 'River of Words' poetry cotact multiple times. The students at Greenwood School spend a day a week out in nature using the environment as the classroom for learning. They have a strong stings program throughout the grades. I highly recommend this school
