We have attended Monterey Highlands for 5 years. In 2012 new administration took over and this school is going down BIG TIME!!! All this principal looks at is #'s, she makes ZERO connection with the students, staff and parents! She hides in her office all day, runs to meetings and is NEVER seen on campus, unless to enforce rules. Parents have made multiple complaints and yet all she does is counter with threats, fear and intimidation instead of using her brain to reach an amicable solution. We have even gone to district with proof of these allegations and they side with her, so unless more parents speak up, this will be a cascading slide into complete degradation of the once great Monterey Highlands Elementary School. Wake up AUSD, before its too late!!!

I moved back to Monterey Park just so my kids can attend this school. Best decision ever! Mrs. Young has been both of my boys' teacher and she is wonderful with the kids.

I don't write many reviews but when it comes to my kids there's nothing I will not do. I enrolled my twins in a TK class in which they seem to be learning so much more than in pre-school. They have a nice teacher in Mrs. Young, who I have seen stay late hours. We also enrolled my 5th grade niece who likes her teacher Mrs. Schu, even though she is a little strict. She is getting a lot more homework than she did in a charter school last year, which is good. I just went through the live scan and TB clearance for volunteering which I thought was a big hassle, but I do understand and agree with the new policy. So in general I do like Monterey Highlands and my new community.

This school is hit or miss. If you're lucky or 'know someone' or are in fact a teacher yourself, you end up getting a mediocre teacher. Such was the case with my child, I feel. She was one of the many top students in her class and yet was placed in a class among kids that were way below her level. My child complains of being bored. The school/home work is a repeat of everything she had already learned last year. Her previous classmates were all placed with 2 popular teachers. Those kid's parents also either teach at highlands or a school in the district. I think most of them don't even live in the area and are on permits. I don't understand why our classes are overfilled and yet we keep taking outside kids?

This school WAS great because there were so many parents assisting the teachers. You can see it going to the field trips with students. There are so many parent volunteers versus other schools. NO LONGER SO. The district added on so many new rules and basically shut out people who are helping. What is more important? Helping kids or appeasing the insurance companies?

In addition to a beautiful setting with lush hills, trees and fields of grass, this school has amazing teachers and staff. The parents are so involved, they make all of the wonderful events such as Spooky Bash, Book Fairs and Day At The Fair successful.

We love this school!! The kindergarten program is excellent! Teachers are very consistent and go above and beyond! Students achieve here and still get a well-rounded education. Extracurricular activities are a forte at this school. The PTA is marvelous and makes this school come alive. Also, school grounds are surrounded by a community park which adds a little "nature" to the school's environment. Mr. Cash, the school's former principal was truly dedicated to this school. Dr. Kotani, the previous assistant principal and new principal shows just as much promise.

It has it's good's and bad's like no other schools. What I don't like is that there is no good reading program. What I like is the parent involvement and good teachers. The Cinco de Mayo rocks just like the Chinese New Years Celebration. My child has never had a Latina/Hispanic teacher but this last year he did...and I would rather had an Asian than her. What this school lacks is supervision. Does anyone knows about the fire that happen in school grounds do to no supervision when the children came out of the after school program. They would be alone with no adult supervision for 30-45 min.

My daughter has attended Monterey Highlands for two years. We love the school, teachers, and administrators. The shool has a great principal (Mr. Cash) who is always participating in all of the events and who ensures that all the students are provided a safe environment.

It is simply the best school in the San Gabriel Valley!! I attended here, and all my siblings have attended, and currently attend this school and the quality of education here is like no other. When i have children they will attend here as well. :D

All of my children have attended this school and have receive a wonderful education and made many great memories. The teachers are wonderful and really strive to help the children. My youngest is currently attending and loves it. Great location, great campus, great staff, what more can I say? Monterey Highlands is great!!

Nice area, good teachers. Mrs. Shyu is a fourth grade teacher. She is not only a good teacher in academic also a loving mentor to the children. Mrs. Shyu makes a memory book for every student every year. She also wrote a very touching letter to every one at the end of the memory book. She gives a lot of time and effect to help her students. They have a lot of good teachers like Mrs. Shyu. They are making difference in our children every day. They are making Monterey Highland school a great school!

I've had children attend Monterey Highlands School for more than 15 years! Its a fabulous school, always has been. My children who are out of high school now received top notch education as well as my children who currently attend. I have only good things to say about this school.

About the tests


In 2012-2013 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.
