Allendale is in the forefront of using Balanced Literacy as our instructional model. This is a group of purposeful literacy experiences such as Guided Reading, Independent Reading, Literature Circles, Written Responses to Text, and more. The final goal is to enhance each learner's effectiveness as a reader. Learners learn by participating in the act of reading. Our learners will: Work together, Be exposed to different genres, Establish goals and evaluate them, Engage in meaningful discussion about reading, Take responsibility for their own learning, Read for meaning, and Develop a deeper understanding of what they read. Our school is also an innovator in elementary science education. This includes hands-on science experiments and science literacy (reading and writing about science). At Allendale, we hold high expectations and we recognize that our students need strong support in order to succeed.
