Chabot offers a postitive, kid-centered environment for learning. Our children have had needs distinct from one another, so we've observed different approaches to offering kids ways to engage in academic subject matter, challenges, and participation in a community. I couldn't have designed a better environment for our kids.

Anthony Chabot Elementary is a great place for children to grow and learn. The teachers and the administration are engaged, caring, and creative. I am amazed at the amount of effort and time everyone puts in to make this a memorable and fulfilling experience for our children.

This school is beyond words. The staff are engaged and engaging with the students. My son loves it there. In his previous school, he would just sorta hang out with his friends, but he didn't really enjoy learning. At Chabot, he has really started enjoying learning to read and write and do math. And once that enthusiasm has been kindled, he's becoming a regular lil learning monster. I LOVE IT! The principal is also very involved. You'll see him walking around in the mornings, talking to parents or students, looking over the road crossing brigade, checking out the kids playing on the play structure. He is very in touch with what's going on "on the ground" and does not just hide in his office. Overall, Chabot Elementary has done wonders for my son, and there's no other school I'd rather put my boy in!

Chabot Elementary is a very academically sound school, that places equal emphasis on extracurricular activities for enrichment. The schools PTA is very strong group, and the school community reflects that. John Mayer is an exceptional principal who is very personable with parents and students alike. We entered the Chabot Family late, however we were welcomed into the fold. My son graduated from Chabot last spring and he was totally prepared for middle school.

My son will be entering the 4th grade this coming school year and has been here just since last year. He feels comfortable and confident for the first time at school. The teachers are top-rate, the principal is a great leader and the school community is progressive and well organized.

My daughter has been attending since kindergarten and is now in 4th grade. Every teacher has been excellent. The principal sets the pace with tremendous energy (when was the last time you saw a principal doing PE, calisthenics, band with the students...regularly?!). He really does seem to know every kid and their parents on a first name basis. 500+ kids, and he manages it all. Teachers are first rate, well educated themselves, and very concerned about the kids. PTA, parent involvement, diversity, and anti-bullying translates to the kids knowing they are indeed special. It's amazing no one has updated Chabot's profile recently.

They have worked hard to be an inclusive community with lots of parent involvement. They are just completing a large new building to accommodate more children and services. I think they could use the money for equipment for the new building.

Chabot is nestled under a freeway in at the base of the Oakland hills. Like a freeway it leads our kids to far away places and is the place where kids of our community can start their climb toward learning, becoming community members themselves, and making memories and life long friends. We are lucky to have Chabot where the teachers shine and the children are stars.

This school is by far the best elementary school in Oakland. Considering it also is undergoing major construction, it can only get better. There is such a diverse group of parents and children that attend Chabot that continually enhance the learning experience for the kids. I have seen many situations that required hard choices to be made and they have been handled in the best possible way.

I am a 4th grade parent and I think the principal is trying his best to appease all factions at the school ,which tends to make him seem wishy-washy . But, I think his heart is in the right place and he has the children's best interest in mind. I will say that the Chabot teachers and support staff have been great for my child. I love that the school is diverse, and that there are extracurricular programs available to boost my child's academic and social growth. And the teacher's are innovative and think outside of the box with new ways to teach our children. Chabot also dedicates itself to parent outreach and supplemental academnic programs for children that may be struggling in certain areas. Having a strong PTA that raises lots of money to supplement and fund afterschool and enrichment programs also helps. Way to go Chabot!

I agree with the last post: 'Chabot Elementary school has declined steadily under the current principal's leadership - lack of leadership, in fact. Academic rigor is missing, there is no accountability, and the prinicpal simply ignores situations that put children at emotional risk. It's a shame.'

This is our sixth year at Chabot! Chabot offers high quality academic programs and an abundance of extracurricular ('enrichment') classes to all students throughout the school week. Parents are very involved (through the PTA and otherwise). They help provide for enrichment programs and after school classes, and they support teachers by volunteering and donating basic supplies (copy paper, paper towels, etc.), which teachers must obtain on their own! Chabot is a safe and positive learning environment, however, I think the administration's response to major discipline problems is weak. The new administration (2nd year) has shown great enthusiasm. Thus, we have had some concern about the degree to which our child's teachers are being fairly and equally treated and supported by the administration. The teachers and families are undoubtedly what makes Chabot so great!

This is a wonderful school with high academic standards and an ethnically diverse student body. A school with both of these characteristics are difficult to find. Great principal, great teachers, highly involved parents, and sweet kids, what a blessing! Our son loves going to kindergarten. I hope the Chabot community will send their kids to Claremont Middle School and bring it up to the standards of Chabot. All it'll take are a critical mass of Chabot families banding together and doing the great things they done at the middle school. Then truly, Rockridge will become a great place for families to live in.

I sent both of my children to Chabot & they both attended until the Fall of 2003, when we moved to Ohio. I always found Chabot to have an outstanding curriculum, helpful staff, and fabulous afterschool programs. It wasn't until my children attended the schools out here in Columbus that I realized just how superior the school really was! My son who is 1yr younger than most of his classmates, immediately shined when he got to his new school. His teachers were most impressed with his readiness and methods of absorbing information, as they were collectively taught to him by his former teachers. They loved, as did I, the Adventure Time program on school grounds. I can tell you now, there hasn't been a program as impressive as that one.

Our child is graduating from Chabot this year. On balance, he's had a very good experience at the school. The quality of teaching, with one exception, has been very good, the teachers fairly experienced and quite supportive. There are a fair amount of extracurricular activities, in part because of a very active parent community. The student body is wonderfully diverse, and there is a great sense of community about the school. I would recommend it with a good deal of enthusiasm.

The strengths of Chabot Elementary reside in its community: sweet, bright children and committed, energetic parents behind a strong PTA. The weakness, in my opinion, is the school's curriculum. As part of the Oakland Unified School District, Chabot adheres to the Open Court language arts program which has proven, in our experience, too inflexible to accommodate both advanced learners and late readers. Rather than giving children materials appropriate to their individual levels, this program requires that all students read the same materials at the same time. In other areas, Chabot seems right on track, but the school falters in language arts in the early years.

A lot of people love this school. I would use caution, however, for a lot of reasons. The selection process for the music program is arbitrary. My daughter's teacher was never available for discussion and never responded to email. Unbelievable! Since she has transfered, she has been placed in the GATE program--go figure.

Chabot has an extremely high level of parent involvement. That is one of the many strong points about this excellent school. The parents are constantly keeping watch over the teachers, therefore the teachers have an inherent pressure to perform/teach well. Music, art, P.E., and gardening are among some of the extracurricular activities. The one weak point about the school is that they don't have a real program that caters to the GATE kids. It is up to the parents to challenge the GATE kids at home. They need to work on this aspect.

My daughter joined Chabot mid year of first grade. We have found it to be a wonderful, enriching environment. The principal is very hands on, knows every child by name and knows her way around the school district. Parent involvement is huge, raising over $150,000 per year to provide music, arts, computer and a garden program, as well as an after school enrichment program. There is little turnover of teachers. We feel very fortunate to be a part of the Chabot family.

We have been very pleased with our daughter's progress at Chabot Elementary School. She came to Chabot as a third grader who previously had attended a private school. Her teacher, Vincent Benedetto, is fantastic. He loves his job and the children he teaches. He and the principal, Ms. Sadler, are kind, but firm with the children. Our daughter is looking forward to next year and hopes to get Ms. Diamond. We are very happy with this school.

Our two sons, K and 3rd grade are ending their first year at Chabot. We could not be happier. The K teachers are all amazing, Mrs. Ahmad has to be the best (because of course, she's ours!) Mrs. Lee is wonderful as well. The garden instructor, Natalie is great with the kids. Parents are encouraged to be involved in the classrooms, unlike the high preforming OUSD school we left to be here. This is actually a place we like to be involved, and feel welcomed. I'm glad to be a Chabot parent, to know my children will get a good education and be well prepared for middle school. I'd encourage anyone with schoolage kids wanting the best experience for their children to consider Chabot.

I have a daughter who is mixed with black & white and I must say I feel so welcome there. My daughter was at a private school I pulled her out in the middle of 2nd grade she is now going into the 4th grade there. Not only was she the only one of color but we just wern't happy there. So we found Chabot & they took us right in and we love it there. The staff are just great. I am sorry they don't go any more then 5th grade because I sure would keep her there. Wonderful, clean & safe. If there is a spot there and your looking this is the school you will be very happy there I sure am.

My child attends Chabot elementary and loves every bit of it. After enrolling him in private schools for the first 2 years of schooling I decided to try a public school for more diversity as well as the opportunity to be involved in extra 'enrichment' activities. Chabot offers my child everything he needs to remain academically challenged and offers after school programs that has him anticipating each school day with excitement! He absolutely loves attending school. I couldn't be happier with the principal, the PTA, Adventure Time and the wonderful teachers at Chabot. I feel like I hit the jackpot without paying a hefty price (private school tuition). Kudos to Chabot for offering the children, and their parents, a well rounded, challenging education. I'm getting more from Chabot than I paid for in private school!

Chabot is an example of what a good public school should look like. It's a diverse and active community of caring teachers, administrators, parents and after-care professionals who genuinely care about the school and the kids it serves. The principal has made a tremendous commitment to maintaining the balance between a strictly neighborhood school and one that welcomes diverse members from the Oakland community. Children have a tremendous opportunity to learn about other cultures, develop an awareness of our natural and cultural environment and become informed members of the community all within the context of a solid, academic focus. The school is quite large (but with manageable class sizes), however plans are in the works to alleviate some of the crowding on the playgrounds.

My daughter has been at Chabot since kindergarden it is outstanding. The best kindergarden team of teachers. And new this year a excellent second grade teacher Ms. L. All props to Chabot for the outstanding public education that is as good a private. PTA & SSC is great too!

My daughter had the opportunity to transfer to Chabot after a month at another Oakland school (which was another one of the few highly rated schools in OUSD.) After only three weeks of attending Chabot the differences in the two schools are very apparent. Not only is Chabot more fun, and more diverse but the academic expectations are much higher. The teachers are wonderful, the staff is wonderful, the principal is wonderful. I feel secure and happy for the first time since my child started kindergarden. Despite all these positives, the thing that makes Chabot stand out far beyond the other school my daughter attended, is the involvement and participation of the parents. I feel proud to be one of the Chabot parents. We have several parent volunteers in our class every single day. The PTA is amazing, organized and the members are passionate. I cannot say enough good things about Chabot. But foremost, it is the parents and the caring families that really make the difference.
