I went to this school years ago. I was there about 1984-87. I had teachers like Mrs. Wehner, Mrs. Toland and a life inspiring music teacher named Mrs. Goldberg who carved out lines in my musical preferences to include no boundaries. It was an amazing school with teachers I adored. I met friends there' such as Celia Clark and learned to play the violin under Mr. Fords induction. It is something thati will never forget even now thati am almost 40 years oldi find myself thinking back to my beloved teachers. .the kick ball I played with Joel and Aaron during recess. It is something I would love to have my 10 year old experience. We now live in Indianapolis and he goes to a wonderful school with equally wonderful teachers. But I will always remember the carnival and the walk a thon and the plays we put on... the musical performances where I arrived to get the lead singing role and Shelley got the part and sang "if I had a hammer" while sitting on the edge of the stage. ... Life changing memories. Thank you redwood heights. Iwona Kiebasinski

I attended Redwood Heights Elementary, 1965-1971. My family moved out of Oakland in November 1971 when I was in the 6th grade. I was sorry to leave the school but I have many fond memories of the teachers and friends made there. I especially remember Mrs. Mickelson in Kindergarten and Mrs. Wallen in 1st and 2nd grade. Time well spent!

RHS worked out for my now middle schooler. In retrospect there could have been more challenges academically. (This said after moving to private schools.) But it worked out. My experience with the second child was less than ideal. Challenges in administration, coupled with mutliple teachers during one grade and many families moving on and out of Oakalnd, has hit this school hard.

I graduated from RHS and my brothers still go there. I went to 3 other elementary schools before I got to RHS and I loved it. We had awesome teachers, great students, fun lessons and plans, a beautiful library, and a wonderful campus in general. I am very proud to be a Redwood Heights Alumni. Go RHS!

Wonderful parent involvement, active PTA and Dad's Club, the new principal is really trying to foster a sense of school community. Band and music instructor is amazing. Wonderful arts program and gardening program. Afterschool enrichment programs are great and varied and the Redwood Heights Community center has a great, affordable afterschool program too. The student population is ethnically diverse.

There is a real sense of 'family' at the school. The parents participate by volunteering their time and money. The teachers are wonderful and very dedicated to teaching to the whole child. And there are many extras such as HUGS the early mental health intervention program, art, music, P.E., library and on and on.

Redwood Heights School is like the good old neighborhood school we used to know. The teachers are hard working, caring and dedicated to their students. The principal brings a spirit of community and pride. The students carry this forward in their school and in their lives, which makes me proud to be a RHS mom.

If your child is performing above great level don't expect that your child will be challenged at this school. The curriculum is mediocre and caters to those students trying to reach grade level. It leaves behind the brighter students who need a challenging curiculum.

Great school with strong parental involvement and community support. Parents who attended the school are now sending their children to the school with fond memories. Unfortunately it is a small school which limits the number of children who can attend. This problem impacts several other schools in Oakland and the OUSD is trying to work on a fair solution to solve the problem.

The politics at Redwood Heights make it a very unpleasant school. If I had a better option I would have pulled my child out a year ago. After the fiasco with some kids not getting in last year the politics have become even worse. Redwood Heights school is a school divided.

One of the most organized and effective elementary schools in Oakland. Parents, teachers, students, and administration are involved. Great coordination with the recreation center and preschool next door. Overall sense of community is generated and long term relationships established.

One of the best Oakland elementary schools. High parent involvement with room parents for each classroom, PTA and Dad's Club. Money raised for various programs including early mental health, library, music, lunch time monitors, etc. Before and after school classes. City recreation center next door with after school program and numerous classes. Teachers tend to stay for many years, appreciating parental involvement and a principal who promotes collaboration. Persistent effort to help children resolve conflicts peacefully.

Redwood Heights does a good job of providing a supportive community for the staff and students. It faces the usual challenges of all Oakland schools. It's a beautiful campus with committed, experienced staff. There is an active music and arts program. The school would do better with a more comprehensive sports program. Overall, a very good school.

We have been with the school since Sept. 1997 and have 2 kids in the school. We love the teachers and especially the principle, who is always there and knows every kid and his parents by name! I love the school.

We started at RWH in 1993 and are still there with our 3rd child. In a school district that is constantly trying, but never quite able, to get ahead of the game. This school is like a shining star. The principal has very high standards but theose start with her. She is at every meeting and every function. She has phenomenal energy and expects no less of her teachers. The students are expected to behave and be courteous. No littering (in Oakland- this is unheard of!) The parents are there constantly. There isn't a day where at least 20 parents haven't been there to volunteer for one thing or another. The key to a good school experience starts at home. If the first school your child attends is anything like this, they will always love school.
