Now in its sixth year, Esperanza Elementary in Oakland is a dual-immersion program. Native English and Spanish speakers learn together in the same classroom. In K-2, literacy and math are taught in Spanish; science and social studies in English. In 3-5 it is the opposite. The school is located in a low-income area, with many of the associated challenges, but as a teacher there last year, I must say that it is a gem of a school with a smart, dedicated, hard-working staff and wonderful children. Espernaza is a great bilingual school. My child is getting a rich education.
Esperanza Elementary School is a K-5 Spanish immersion language school. Our instruction focuses on the California state standards and provides students with a rich academic experience. Instruction includes a robust system for learning English and Spanish, a unique approach to integrating subject matter content through thematic teaching, and an emphasis on preparing students for successful futures. Esperanza Elementary provides many supportive structures for students and their families. Esperanza teachers extend themselves beyond the classroom to create a strong connection between school and home. 100% of the classroom teachers engage in home visits where students set goals to work towards during the school year. To support students in achieving their goals, we offer an after school program, High Hopes, for our 1st through 5th grade students. High Hopes focuses on homework completion and enrichment, including art and dance. Our classroom teachers also provide academic intervention after school for students that need extra support on reaching their goals. There are a number of fun school activities in which our students can participate. We have a Core Values program which emphasizes and encourages positive behavior amongst our students. We also have a student council, school newspaper, and a program called Upward Roots, in which students participate in projects to improve the community. The highlight of our programs for students is the ability to play organized games during their recess time, where students have opportunities to be leaders on the playground. This sports program is supported with team sports, on-site handball and tetherball tournaments, and allows students opportunities to engage in many different games of soccer. Esperanza Elementary families and school personnel work well together to provide many opportunities for students to be engaged with a positive school experience. There are many opportunities and forums for families to be involved in school activities and to be leaders on campus. We believe that a strong school creates a strong community and we look forward to the opportunity to interact with more families in Oakland!
