We love the school although the volunteer hours are quite tremendous. I like the idea of lots of field trips. Indeed, my kids learned a lot from those trips especially overnight trips. However, I agreed with one of the parents' comment that the school should focus more on academics.

Ocean Shore I feel this school is not emphasizing enough on academic. For example, there are too may field trips during school year, and there is not enough decent computers for students. As a result, Math is lagging compare to other schools nearby. This is the time that we need to produce more well prepared math and science students.

I love Ocean Shore!!! Parents and teachers work very hard together to make sure our children get the best education. My son look forward going to school because of all field trips and activities. If it wasn't because of the hours the parents put in none of that would be possible! This school is a great school...

Reading all these glowing reviews, I get excited about the ideal of what OSS promises all over again. I reviewed this school in 2008 and my opinion is still that OSS still requires a lot of work with regard to character building. The adults at the school from parents to school personnel need a constant reminder that children learn by what we do, not what we say. For example, respect can be taught in very simple, concrete ways. When a child goes hungry, because several adults refused to listen and dismissed that child, it is neither nurturing nor respectful. Tolerance and compassion are hallmarks of COMMUNITY. Sadly, we have not experienced the community, collaboration and sharing that is so often mentioned here. We do so wish that other families would reach out to each other with sincerity. Once again, I hope OSS adults will take it as a challenge to act on rather than a personal attack.

Ocean Shore is very adept at giving each child individual attention. If a child has special needs it is a great place to be. Experiential learning is their forte. We moved to Pacifica just to be at Ocean Shore School (No, literally. Really). Ocean Shore is an alternative education approach that supports the whole child in learning. There is a deep sense of community, of public service, caring for the environment, as well as education. Children work hard to achieve their goals, and with high parental involvement and teacher support, achieve those schools. There are environmental programs at the school. Supplemental scientific programs. After school enrichment programs. Field trips occur frequently, are instructive and directly tied to curriculum. Each year, the school puts on a 'winter bazaar' that benefits a local food bank. I'm so proud to be part of this community.

It is a parent participation program where every family commits to volunteer from 85-145 hours per year. We have a hands-on, experiential curriculum complete with many field trips and theme days. Our parents provide curriculum support through science, art, library and environmental activities. Our staff are supportive of both parents and children and enable us to work together to better serve our kids.

I would disagree with the upper grade comments for Ocean Shore School. Though my kids are still younger, they have been reading buddies with 8 graders. If that doesn't provide leadership for the big kids, I don't know what does! The 2nd grade buddies and their families are invited to the 8th grade graduation at the end of the school year. I was so impressed that the 8th grade teachers made an affirming public comment about each graduate. It was very powerful and heartwarming. The upper graders also train for and attend a backpacking trip. This school doesn't just prepare kids for the next hardest level of schooling- it gives them real life experience to learn and interact. Of course it follows the California state education standards and the school has very good test scores.

My child graduated from Ocean Shore and went to a highly competitive private high school where she is thriving. It's true that choices offered to middle school grades are limited, largely due to the small school population; however, the quality of education is excellent and the kids receive highly individualized attention during this critical period of early adolescence. The focus is on critical thinking skills instead of rote learning. There are plenty of opportunities for leadership, although some kids aren't ready to assume them and they're not forced to. Kids are guided and supported to assume responsibility for their own learning. This works remarkably well for the majority of them. As with any school, it's not right for everyone and there are trade-offs. This is the school for families whose educational priorities are learning to think critically and work cooperatively, nurturing the whole child, and community service.

School focuses on more than just basic education -- small group activities, cross-grade activities, many field trips and other 'hands on' learning activities. Requires parent involvement to enable all this, and there is a very large degree of parent involvement expected and that occurs as a result.

This is what school should be about - strong teaching in the basics and strong exposure to things like art and music. The parent involvement at this school makes all the difference as they help out in the classrooms, making special presentations to the kids on special topics (e.g., local scientists come to the classes to teach about their area of expertise), and help with fundraising and administration. The school is also physically beautiful and the staff is very supportive and knowledgeable. This is the school to choose if you want to be an active partner in helping your child be his very best.

Ocean Shore school is a wonderful place where attention is paid to the intellectual, social, and character development of the children. Development of critical independent thinking is encouraged. The extensive parental involvement is good for the children, as they get more personal attention. It is also good for the teachers, as they get help, and can therefore devote more time to teaching, and provide each student with more individual and small group instruction. Finally, it is good for the parents and families, because it promotes parental involvement in their child's education, increases parent's awareness of their child's experience, and helps them to network with other families, contributing to a wonderful sense of community. All of these factors facilitate education of the children. I am very happy with our choice to send our child to Ocean Shore School.
